Chapter 1

Author: Scarlett Flame
After Elton Carter did everything to make me his wife, he brought home a different woman each night. It wasn't until he met someone else that he finally began to settle down.

I first met Yvette White on my birthday, right after I had been discharged from the hospital.

My doctor regretfully informed me that I had only about a week left to live, which was shorter than I had anticipated. My time was even more limited than I had imagined.

While I wasn't afraid of dying, I feared the pain. The doctor recommended a costly medication that could relieve my pain and buy me extra time.

To afford the treatment, I had to approach Elton for his help. It was then that I encountered Yvette, Elton's secretary in the company.

Yvette glanced at me with disgust and remarked, "So, this is Elton's wife? People say I look like her. I don't see how. She's hideous."

As I peered into the surface of my coffee, my reflection stared back at me. I had no makeup and was wrapped in a heavy winter coat.

She was right. I didn't look my best. And, in fact, I was dying.

One of Elton's subordinates discreetly tugged Yvette's arm and whispered, "That's only because Mrs. Carter hasn't been well lately and hasn't been dressing up. Just a warning—don't go picking fights with her just because the Boss favors you right now.

"You have no idea how much he loves her. If you upset her, don't be surprised if he tosses you into the ocean to feed the sharks."

Yvette couldn't hide her skepticism as she rolled her eyes. She didn't think that Elton loved me very much.

She leaned in, her expression smug. "Ms. Johnson, what are you still doing here? Elton always sees me first, no matter how busy he is. He says that I'm more important than anything else."

Yvette flashed a smirk that dripped with open provocation. Her bold, arrogant demeanor was a striking reminder of my younger self.

I couldn't blame her for being cocky. After all, Elton did treat her differently.

He had always surrounded himself with women. Each night, he brought a new face into his life. He used them like weapons to test me and provoke a reaction.

However, he never maintained long-term relationships. His longest relationship spanned two months, while the briefest lasted merely a few days before his interest waned.

Yet, Yvette was different. She was the only one who had remained by Elton's side for the longest time.

I looked at Yvette and offered her a faint smile. However, my words did nothing to protect her pride. I questioned, "If you're really that important, then why is Elton still keeping you as the other woman? As someone he can't even acknowledge?

"Instead of coming here to throw shade, maybe you should use that time to talk some sense into him. Tell him to hurry up and divorce me."

Yvette was still young, so her temper got the better of her. Her expression instantly changed as she snapped, "The one who isn't loved is the real third wheel! You're old and ugly. What makes you think you can compare to me?"

A subordinate quickly pulled Yvette away, worried that I'd be upset. However, I didn't care.

I had decided long ago that I wouldn't let Elton make me sad, and I wasn't going to fight over him with another woman because he wasn't worth it.

Elton never imagined that the day he took Yvette away would be the last time he saw me.That day, I didn't ask why Yvette was pregnant. Instead, I remained calm, just like always, as if I didn't care at all whether he had fallen for another woman. And so, I didn't wait for him to return or give him the chance to explain.Daisy refused to let him see my body. He wasn't even allowed to keep a handful of my ashes. It seemed that I was truly heartless in his eyes.He began to regret not telling me right then and there that the child wasn't his. The night he left me to find Yvette at the bar, Yvette had already gotten drunk and had been assaulted. By the time he arrived, it was too late. However, Yvette said that if Elton hadn't made her so upset, she wouldn't have gotten drunk and ended up in that situation.Elton knew that it wasn't his fault. But when Yvette cried, her tear-streaked face reminiscent of mine, he relented. He handled everything for her, but he couldn't provide the on

I couldn't hide my injury from Daisy, who saw right through me.She was furious, angry that I didn't take better care of myself. All I could do was promise her that I'd never try to push myself like that again.Daisy sighed and gently coaxed me, "When you get better, I'll take you to see Mrs. Johnson, okay?"I knew that she was lying. I wasn't going to get better. But I didn't want her to worry, so I smiled and nodded.I started taking my medicine obediently and cooperating with the doctors. Money was spent freely each day, but it didn't concern me. After all, it was Elton's money, and he owed me.Perhaps it was simply a final burst of clarity before I met the end. Over the next few days, even as my body hurt more and more, my mind felt sharper than ever.Word must have gotten out that I was doing better, which prompted Yvette to visit the hospital while Elton was away. The moment Daisy saw her, she snapped, "Who let a slut in here? Get the hell out before I throw you out myself

Back then, I had asked him, "Elton, are you playing me?"Elton pushed the woman off his lap and staggered toward me, reeking of alcohol. "That's right. I am playing you. So what? "But seeing how miserable your life's been since you left me, I suddenly feel a little soft-hearted. Why don't you really marry me? "But I don't love you anymore. So you'll have to be obedient and well-behaved. I have many women. If you keep getting jealous and crying over that, I'll get really annoyed."Hearing Elton say that he didn't love me anymore made me burst into tears. I inhaled deeply and prepared to reveal the truth to him at last. "I came here today to tell you that I don't want to marry you. The reason I broke up with you back then was because of my mom—"Before I could finish speaking, Elton interrupted me harshly, "Don't mention your mother to me! I treated her with respect, as if she were my own. But she really was your mother. "She was just as greedy as you! You're both the same, to

For two days after I woke up, Daisy stayed by my side without leaving for a single moment. She was even more attentive than any caretaker could've been.Lying in bed for so long had become unbearable. When she finally stepped out of the ward, I tried to get up and make my way to the bathroom. But my legs gave out the moment I put weight on them. I collapsed to the floor.I struggled to get up and felt guilty as I tried to crawl back into bed. I didn't want Daisy to worry when she returned.Suddenly, Elton burst into the ward and swept me into his arms, holding me tightly. He muttered angrily, "Where the hell did Daisy go? I was only gone a few minutes to pay for your meds. She was supposed to be watching you!"I didn't have the strength to push him away, but I still managed to frown and snap back at him. "Shut up! Don't talk badly about Daisy in front of me. I don't want to hear it. "She has her own life. She can't be expected to center her life around me every day. I've alrea

I heard Elton crying while I was half-conscious. He asked the doctor repeatedly, "Why won't the bleeding stop? What's wrong with her? Save her! You have to save her!"The doctor replied, "The patient's condition is critical. I told her the day before yesterday that there's a special medication. "If she cooperated with treatment, she might have lived for another two months, maybe even longer. But she said that she had no money left and didn't want treatment anymore. "Today, the emotional outburst worsened her condition significantly. At this point, there's no point in further treatment. It's too late to control the progression of her illness. The patient could…"Elton struggled to keep his voice steady as he asked, "You're saying that… she is really dying?"Before the doctor could offer any words of comfort, Elton suddenly raised his voice, shouting with raw desperation, "No! That's not possible! You fix her now! If you can't treat her, get the hell out and bring in the best doct
