Chapter 58

“It means this was never the real plan.”

Silence swallowed the warehouse instantly.

Rain thundered against the broken roof overhead while Damon stared at Elias with narrowing eyes.

“What are you talking about?” Damon asked coldly.

Elias looked amused.

Not arrogant.

Certain.

Which was worse.

“You think Hale cared about the system collapsing?” he said softly.

“A man like him always plans for failure.”

Luca’s expression darkened immediately.

“No.”

Elias glanced toward him.

“You still don’t understand him after all these years?”

Luca stepped forward.

Dangerous now.

Every inch of him turning lethal again.

“Hale doesn’t lose control willingly.”

Elias smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

The realization hit Damon first.

Like ice water down his spine.

The system falling.

Hale disappearing.

The truth about Luca surfacing now

Not earlier.

Now.

Not chaos.

Design.

“He wanted this,” Damon whispered.

Elias nodded slowly.

“Not the collapse.”

A pause.

“The aftermath.”

Lightning flashed violently overhead.

Luca’s pulse slowed dangerously.

Because suddenly

Pieces started connecting in horrifying ways.

The fake peace.

The delayed memories.

The files resurfacing now.

Hale had waited.

Patiently.

For Damon and Luca to become inseparable first.

“Oh my God,” Seraphine whispered from the warehouse entrance.

No one even noticed she had arrived.

Elias looked pleased by their reactions.

“Hale understood something very early.”

His gaze shifted toward Damon.

“You were the only variable Luca would destroy himself for.”

Luca went still.

Completely still.

“And Damon,” Elias continued calmly, “was the only person capable of making Luca choose emotion over survival.”

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“So he manipulated us into loving each other?”

Elias laughed softly.

“No.”

A pause.

“That part happened naturally.”

And somehow

That was more terrifying.

Because it meant Hale saw their love…

And weaponized it.

Luca felt sick.

Every moment with Damon suddenly felt vulnerable.

Observed.

Calculated.

“Hale let you get close,” Elias said quietly.

“He knew eventually the truth would surface.”

Damon’s voice lowered dangerously.

“Why?”

Elias looked directly at Luca.

“Because guilt destroys people better than violence ever could.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Luca looked away immediately.

There it was again.

That poisonous belief inside him.

You ruin everything.

Damon noticed instantly.

“No.”

The word came sharp enough to cut through the warehouse.

Luca looked at him helplessly.

“He’s right.”

“No, he’s manipulating you.”

“I killed your mother.”

The words echoed brutally between them.

Damon flinched.

Not because Luca said it.

Because hearing it aloud still hurt.

Still shattered something inside him.

Elias watched them carefully.

Enjoying this.

“Hale knew this truth would split you apart eventually,” he said calmly.

“And once Luca loses the one thing tethering him emotionally…”

A slow smile.

“…he becomes useful again.”

Luca’s blood ran cold.

No.

That was the real plan.

Not revenge.

Not chaos.

Reclamation.

Hale wanted Luca broken enough to control again.

Seraphine realized it too.

Her face drained instantly.

“He’s isolating him psychologically.”

Elias nodded.

“Good.”

A pause.

“You’re finally understanding.”

Luca stepped backward unconsciously.

Like the warehouse itself was closing around him.

Damon noticed immediately.

“Luca.”

But Luca looked terrified now.

Not of Damon.

Of himself.

Because Elias was right about one thing:

Every terrible thing in Luca’s life happened when he was emotionally shattered.

And right now

He was falling apart again.

Elias stepped closer slowly.

“You know what happens next, don’t you?”

Luca’s breathing became uneven.

“You lose control.”

Flashbacks slammed violently through him.

Training rooms.

Blood.

Orders.

Pain used as conditioning.

Obey.

Survive.

Kill.

Luca grabbed the side of his head hard.

Trying to steady himself.

“Luca,” Damon said again.

Closer now.

Gentler.

But Luca recoiled instantly.

“Don’t.”

The word cracked apart.

Damon froze.

Because Luca sounded genuinely afraid of touching him.

Elias smiled faintly.

“There he is.”

Damon finally snapped.

Before anyone reacted

He crossed the warehouse in seconds and slammed Elias hard against the concrete wall.

Gun pressed beneath his jaw.

“Shut. Up.”

Elias didn’t even look frightened.

That made Damon angrier.

“You think killing me changes anything?” Elias asked softly.

Damon’s eyes were ice.

“No.”

A beat.

“But it’ll make me feel better.”

“Damon.”

Luca’s voice.

Shaking.

Damon looked back immediately.

Luca stood trembling near the center of the warehouse.

Eyes unfocused.

Breathing wrong.

And suddenly Damon realized

This wasn’t just emotional.

Luca was having a trauma response.

A severe one.

Elias saw it too.

Of course he did.

“His conditioning was activated years ago through stress triggers,” Elias said calmly despite the gun at his throat.

“Pain. Guilt. Emotional instability.”

Seraphine swore softly.

“No…”

Luca staggered backward again.

Hands shaking violently now.

“Stop talking,” Damon growled.

But Elias kept going anyway.

“You want to know the cruelest part?”

A pause.

“He’s fighting the urge to obey even now.”

Silence.

Absolute.

Damon looked sharply toward Luca.

And Luca

Wouldn’t meet his eyes.

Because it was true.

Somewhere deep inside the conditioning Hale built into him

Commands still existed.

Buried.

Dormant.

Waiting.

Damon’s chest tightened violently.

“Luca.”

Slowly

Luca looked up.

And Damon saw it immediately.

Fear.

Not aggression.

Not violence.

Fear of himself.

“I need you to leave,” Luca whispered.

Damon shook his head instantly.

“No.”

Luca’s breathing became more uneven.

“Please.”

That word nearly broke

Damon.

Because Luca never begged.

And suddenly

The warehouse lights shut off completely.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Then Hale’s voice echoed through the building softly:

“Let’s see which part of him wins.”
