Chapter 79

“No.”

For the first time since any of them had met her

Vale sounded terrified.

Not irritated.

Not coldly analytical.

Terrified.

The chamber erupted into violent white light the second Mira touched Cassian’s hand.

The neural core screamed.

Not mechanically.

Almost human.

Every monitor in the underground facility glitched simultaneously while warning sirens spiraled into chaos.

“ANCHOR REASSIGNMENT DETECTED.”

“NETWORK STRUCTURE DESTABILIZING.”

“PRIMARY CONTROL FAILURE.”

Hale stared at the system in stunned disbelief.

“That’s impossible.”

But it was happening.

Everyone could see it.

The neural network pulsing through the chamber had started shifting away from Luca’s imprint.

Away from the original synchronization pattern.

Toward Mira.

And Cassian.

Mira gasped sharply as data streams flashed across the walls around them like fractured memories spilling into reality.

Images flickered through the room in rapid bursts.

Children inside training rooms.

Medical reports.

Screaming operatives.

And suddenly

Faces.

Hundreds of faces.

The second division.

The first division.

Children lost inside the system for years.

Seraphine physically recoiled.

“What the hell is this?”

Cassian stared weakly at the shifting projections.

Recognition flickering painfully across his face.

“The network archives…”

The core wasn’t just a machine.

It was a graveyard.

Every neural imprint connected to the program had left fragments behind.

Pain.

Fear.

Conditioning.

Lives trapped inside data architecture.

Mira cried out softly and covered her ears.

“There’s too many voices.”

Damon moved toward her immediately.

“Mira”

“No!”

The scream ripped out of her unexpectedly.

Everyone froze.

Including Damon.

Mira’s body trembled violently.

Not from fear this time.

From overload.

“They’re scared,” she whispered desperately.

“They think they’re dying.”

The projections around the room flickered harder.

Children’s faces flashing in fractured static.

Operatives screaming through corrupted audio files.

And Luca

Luca suddenly realized the horrifying truth.

The neural network had never erased its victims completely.

Pieces of them were still trapped inside the system.

Cassian looked sick.

“Vale archived neural responses.”

Seraphine turned sharply toward Hale.

“You stored human consciousness?”

Hale’s silence was enough.

Damon laughed once.

A hollow, horrified sound.

“Jesus Christ.”

Vale’s voice exploded through the speakers instantly.

“THE SYSTEM MUST BE STABILIZED.”

Gone was the calm detachment.

Now she sounded frantic.

Because control was slipping.

Mira looked upward shakily.

Tears streaming down her face.

“They don’t want to hurt people anymore.”

The chamber lights flickered violently.

“EMOTIONAL RESONANCE CASCADE DETECTED.”

Cassian gave a weak, breathless laugh despite the blood pouring down his throat.

“You built a torture network so badly even the trauma developed empathy.”

Vale’s silence afterward felt murderous.

The neural core surged again.

Only this time

The energy wasn’t attacking.

It was changing.

The violent synchronization pulses had started slowing.

Softening around Mira’s heartbeat.

Hale moved rapidly across the console screens.

His expression unreadable.

“The architecture is rewriting itself.”

Seraphine frowned sharply.

“What does that mean?”

Hale looked toward Mira.

Then Cassian.

Then Luca.

“It means the anchor system is no longer prioritizing obedience.”

Silence crashed into the room.

Luca stared at the neural core.

No.

After everything

After years of torture and conditioning

The system was adapting to emotion instead of suppressing it.

Vale’s voice cut through the chamber again.

Cold with fury now.

“Arthur, restore primary control immediately.”

Hale didn’t move.

“Arthur.”

Still nothing.

Damon noticed the shift instantly.

“You’re done following her orders.”

Hale’s jaw tightened slightly.

“For years I believed emotion weakened survival probability.”

A pause.

“I was wrong.”

Luca stared at him in disbelief.

Wrong?

That was the word he chose after decades of destroying children?

Rage flickered hard inside him again.

“You don’t get redemption for realizing basic humanity too late.”

Hale met his gaze evenly.

“I know.”

No defense.

No denial.

And somehow

That honesty hurt worse than excuses.

Cassian suddenly cried out sharply again as another overload wave ripped through the synchronization chair.

The transfer was still killing him.

Luca rushed back toward him instantly.

“Cassian!”

Cassian’s breathing had become dangerously shallow now.

His skin pale beneath streaks of blood and sweat.

But somehow

He was still conscious.

Barely.

Cassian looked weakly toward Mira standing near the core.

“…kid’s terrifying.”

Mira blinked.

Confused.

“Why?”

Cassian coughed painfully before answering.

“You’re crashing a billion-dollar trauma program with feelings.”

Despite everything

Damon barked out one shocked laugh.

Even Seraphine looked like she almost smiled.

Mira frowned softly.

“I just don’t want anyone hurting anymore.”

The chamber went quiet again.

Because that was it.

That simple.

Not revenge.

Not destruction.

Mercy.

And somehow that was more powerful than everything Vale built.

The neural core pulsed softer around Mira again.

Almost responsive.

Luca stared at her carefully.

“Mira…”

She looked toward him instantly.

Still trusting him.

Still seeing safety in him after all these years.

And suddenly Luca remembered another fragmented memory.

Young Mira hiding behind him during procedures.

Whispering quietly:

“They can’t be mean when you’re here.”

His chest tightened painfully.

Because she believed he protected her.

Even when he couldn’t save himself.

The projections around the room shifted again suddenly.

This time

A face appeared clearly among the corrupted static.

Young Cassian.

Small.

Bruised.

Sitting alone inside a medical cell.

The room froze.

Cassian went completely still in the chair.

Because he remembered this too.

Vale’s recorded voice echoed from the projection:

“Subject Two demonstrates exceptional overload tolerance.”

Another voice followed.

Hale’s.

Colder then.

“Continue conditioning.”

Young Cassian looked directly toward the camera in the recording.

Expression empty.

And softly

Almost too quietly to hear

He asked:

“If I survive this one… can Luca go free?”

Silence detonated through the chamber.

Luca physically staggered backward.

No.

The projection continued.

Vale answered calmly from offscreen:

“Compliance will improve Subject One’s future stability.”

Young Cassian nodded once.

Then willingly walked toward the synchronization chair.

Present-day Luca stopped breathing.

Because even then

Cassian thought suffering could protect him.

Damon looked shattered.

Seraphine horrified.

Even Hale’s expression darkened.

Cassian laughed weakly through tears suddenly filling his eyes.

“Well.”

A shaky breath.

“That’s humiliating.”
