Chapter 82

If He Dies

“The system dies with him.”

The words echoed through the chamber like a sentence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Cassian stared blankly at Hale from the synchronization chair while electricity snapped violently around him.

Blood dripped steadily from his chin onto the metal restraints.

Then softly

Almost offended

He asked:

“…seriously?”

The neural core pulsed behind him like a living heartbeat.

SECONDARY ANCHOR ACCEPTED.

The words still flashed across every screen in the room.

Hale’s expression remained unreadable.

But Luca noticed the smallest shift in his posture.

Tension.

Because this wasn’t supposed to happen.

Cassian laughed weakly.

A little hysterically this time.

“So after years of torture, the evil death machine finally decided I’m special?”

No one answered.

Because apparently

Yes.

The network had adapted to him.

Mira looked toward Cassian with frightened eyes.

“It doesn’t want you to leave.”

Cassian’s smile faded immediately.

That sentence hit too close to something broken inside him.

Luca tightened his grip around Cassian’s trembling hand.

“You’re not leaving.”

Cassian looked at him carefully for a moment.

Then softly

“You keep saying that like you can fight physics.”

“I’ll fight anything.”

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Cassian froze slightly.

Because Luca sounded sincere.

Absolutely sincere.

And maybe that was the problem.

The chamber shook violently again.

Large cracks split across the ceiling now.

Concrete crashing down somewhere deeper inside the facility.

“REACTOR INSTABILITY CRITICAL.”

Seraphine looked upward sharply.

“We are running out of time.”

Hale turned rapidly back toward the console screens.

Data streamed across them in corrupted flashes.

“The network architecture is restructuring around two anchor points.”

Damon frowned.

“Mira and Cassian.”

“Yes.”

“And that means?”

Hale hesitated.

Which immediately irritated everyone.

Damon glared at him.

“If you pause dramatically one more time, I’m throwing you into the wall.”

Cassian weakly raised a finger from the chair.

“Seconded.”

Even now.

Even dying.

Still sarcastic.

Hale ignored them both.

“The system no longer requires Luca for stabilization.”

Luca blinked once.

The words landed strangely.

Because for his entire life

The program revolved around him.

The primary subject.

The original design.

And now

The system had moved on.

Like he was no longer necessary.

The thought should’ve relieved him.

Instead it hurt.

Mira looked toward Luca immediately.

Like she sensed the shift in him.

“You’re still important.”

Luca’s chest tightened painfully.

Because even after everything

She still noticed when he was hurting.

Cassian watched Luca quietly from the chair.

And understood instantly.

“You tied your entire identity to surviving this place.”

Luca looked away.

“No.”

“Yes,” Cassian rasped weakly.

“You just don’t like hearing it out loud.”

Silence settled heavily between them.

Because Cassian was right.

If Luca wasn’t the primary subject anymore

Then who was he?

Not a weapon.

Not a project.

Not the system’s center.

Just…

Luca.

The idea terrified him.

Damon noticed immediately.

Of course he did.

He moved beside Luca without hesitation.

Close enough their shoulders touched.

Grounding him again.

“You know normal people get identity crises in college.”

Luca stared at him blankly.

“This is objectively worse.”

Despite everything

Luca let out one weak breath that almost sounded like laughter.

Damon leaned slightly closer.

Voice softer now.

“You don’t have to belong to the system to matter.”

The sentence settled somewhere deep inside Luca’s chest.

Painfully.

Tenderly.

Because Damon said it like it was simple.

Like Luca existing was enough reason to care about him.

And Luca still didn’t fully understand how to believe that.

The projections around the room flickered again suddenly.

The archived neural fragments becoming clearer.

One by one

Children appeared across the chamber walls.

Silent.

Watching.

Seraphine looked unnerved.

“They’re stabilizing.”

Hale’s eyes narrowed toward the displays.

“No.”

Everyone looked toward him sharply.

“They’re synchronizing.”

A cold silence spread through the room.

Mira’s expression shifted slightly.

Listening.

“They’re talking.”

Damon frowned.

“What are they saying?”

Mira swallowed hard.

“They want freedom.”

The neural core pulsed violently.

Not aggressive.

Desperate.

And suddenly Luca understood.

The archived fragments trapped inside the network weren’t just data.

They were residual consciousness patterns.

Echoes.

Memories.

Pain preserved digitally for years.

And now the system itself was trying to release them.

Vale’s voice exploded through the speakers immediately.

“DO NOT ALLOW FULL SYNCHRONIZATION.”

Hale turned sharply toward the sound.

“Why?”

For the first time

Vale hesitated.

Cassian noticed instantly.

“Oh,” he rasped weakly.

“That’s interesting.”

Damon narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

Cassian looked toward the neural core slowly.

Then toward the archived faces surrounding the chamber.

“She’s scared of what happens if they wake up completely.”

Silence.

Then Luca realized it too.

The neural archive contained memories.

Evidence.

Every procedure.

Every experiment.

Every child destroyed inside this place.

The system held proof of everything Vale had done.

Vale’s voice sharpened dangerously.

“The archive integrity must be preserved.”

“There it is,” Seraphine muttered.

Hale stared at the screens silently.

Something calculating behind his expression.

Then softly

Almost to himself

He said:

“The archive could expose the entire program.”

Damon looked at him in disbelief.

“That’s what you’re worried about right now?”

“No.”

Hale’s eyes shifted toward Cassian.

Then Mira.

Then Luca.

“I’m realizing what this system became.”

Luca laughed once.

Cold.

“A little late for self-awareness.”

Hale accepted that without argument.

Because there was nothing to defend anymore.

Another violent overload wave slammed through Cassian suddenly.

He screamed.

The synchronization chair sparked violently enough to ignite nearby wiring.

Luca immediately grabbed him harder.

“Cassian!”

Cassian’s body shook uncontrollably now.

His breathing deteriorating fast.

The monitors above him flashed critical warnings.

SECONDARY ANCHOR FAILURE IMMINENT.

Mira gasped sharply.

“No”

The neural core surged violently in response.

Like the system itself panicked.

Hale looked sharply toward the console.

“The network is reacting emotionally to his condition.”

Seraphine blinked.

“I’m sorry the evil AI is having feelings now?”

Cassian weakly lifted his head.

“I always knew I was lovable.”

Then he coughed blood violently across the front of his shirt.

Luca felt real fear claw through him instantly.

Not again.

Not someone else dying in front of him.

Damon saw it happen immediately.

The panic in Luca’s eyes.

The helplessness.

He moved closer instantly.

“Hey.”

Luca shook his head shakily.

“I can’t lose him.”

The words came out small.

Terrified.

Cassian heard them.

And something inside his expression broke quietly apart.

Because nobody had ever sounded afraid to lose him before.
