Chapter 81

“Now I actually want to survive.”

The confession landed softly.

Quietly.

But it shattered something open inside the room.

Cassian looked almost annoyed by the admission.

Like wanting to live was inconvenient.

Embarrassing.

Dangerous.

And maybe for someone raised the way he was

It was.

Luca stared at him silently, Cassian’s trembling hand still locked tightly in his own while the synchronization chair sparked violently around them.

“You’re going to,” Luca said immediately.

Cassian gave him a look that practically screamed that’s medically impossible.

“Luca.”

“No.”

The answer came sharper this time.

Desperate.

“You do not get to die after emotionally traumatizing me with childhood archive footage.”

Despite the blood pouring down his face

Cassian laughed.

A real laugh this time.

Weak and breathless.

Damon rubbed a hand over his eyes.

“This entire facility needs therapy.”

Seraphine snorted despite herself.

“Understatement of the century.”

Another violent tremor ripped through the underground chamber.

The ceiling groaned overhead as cracks spread across reinforced concrete walls.

Dust rained down around them.

“STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE IMMINENT.”

The facility was dying.

Fast.

Hale checked the console readings sharply.

His expression darkening further with every second.

“The overload transfer is destabilizing the lower reactors.”

Damon frowned.

“Meaning?”

“If the core ruptures before shutdown,” Hale answered quietly, “the blast radius will erase this entire sector.”

Silence.

Seraphine blinked once.

“…you built a nuclear trauma basement.”

“No,” Cassian rasped painfully from the chair.

A rough breath.

“Worse.”

The neural core pulsed violently behind him again.

The white light now unstable enough to distort the air itself.

Luca felt another sharp wave of memory flash through him the closer he stood to the core.

Young Cassian strapped into synchronization restraints.

Young Luca screaming at technicians to stop the procedure.

And Hale

Watching silently while Vale recorded results.

The memory hit harder now because Luca understood the truth beneath it.

Cassian had never blamed him for the suffering itself.

He blamed Luca for surviving when he couldn’t stop caring.

For staying human in ways Cassian lost the ability to.

Luca’s chest tightened painfully.

“You should’ve hated me.”

Cassian blinked slowly toward him.

“What?”

Luca’s voice shook.

“After everything they did to you because of me.”

Cassian stared at him for a long moment.

Then laughed weakly again.

“Luca.”

A rough breath.

“I did hate you.”

The honesty hurt.

But somehow not as badly as Luca expected.

Cassian’s expression softened faintly beneath the pain.

“I hated how easy it was for you to stay kind.”

Luca froze.

Because that was the opposite of what he believed.

“You think I stayed kind?”

Cassian looked at him like the answer was obvious.

“You still protected people even after they broke you.”

Silence settled heavily between them.

Cassian coughed painfully before continuing.

“You know what I became when they hurt me?”

Luca’s throat tightened.

“A weapon.”

Cassian nodded once.

“Exactly.”

The room felt colder suddenly.

Because Luca realized something devastating.

Cassian genuinely believed Luca was stronger than him.

Not physically.

Humanly.

And Luca hated that.

Because Cassian survived impossible things too.

“You were a child,” Luca whispered.

“So were you.”

Another overload wave slammed through the chair.

Cassian cried out sharply as electricity tore across his body again.

Luca immediately moved closer.

“Hey hey, stay with me.”

Cassian’s breathing staggered violently.

“Trying.”

The neural monitors above the chair flashed critical warning symbols.

“ABSORPTION THRESHOLD: FAILURE.”

Hale looked sharply toward the console.

“He’s reaching systemic collapse.”

Damon stepped toward him instantly.

“Fix it.”

Hale’s jaw tightened.

“There may not be enough time.”

Damon grabbed Hale’s collar hard enough to slam him backward into the console.

“Then make time.”

The room went still.

Because Damon looked genuinely dangerous now.

Not emotional.

Not reactive.

Furious.

“You spent years turning children into experiments,” Damon hissed.

“You do not get to stand there helpless now.”

Hale met his gaze evenly despite the violence.

“There are limitations even I cannot override.”

Damon shoved him harder.

“Try anyway.”

Luca watched the confrontation silently.

And suddenly

A strange realization hit him.

Damon wasn’t angry because he wanted revenge anymore.

He was angry because people he loved were hurting.

The difference mattered.

Mira suddenly gasped softly near the neural core.

Everyone looked toward her immediately.

She had both hands pressed against her chest now.

Eyes wide.

Terrified.

“They’re waking up.”

Luca’s pulse dropped cold.

“Who?”

Mira looked toward the projections surrounding the room.

The archived neural fragments flickering harder now across the walls.

“The others.”

As if responding to her words

The projections shifted again.

Children appeared more clearly now.

Not distorted static.

Not fragmented shadows.

Faces.

Real faces.

Young operatives.

Subjects.

Victims.

All staring toward the center of the chamber.

Toward Cassian.

Toward Mira.

Toward Luca.

Seraphine physically stepped backward.

“…I hate this place.”

Damon looked unsettled too.

“What are they doing?”

Mira’s voice trembled softly.

“They don’t want him to die alone.”

Silence crashed through the chamber.

Cassian closed his eyes briefly.

“Well,” he rasped weakly, “that’s horrifyingly sweet.”

Luca’s chest ached so hard it became difficult to breathe.

Because these children

These lost fragments trapped inside the network

Recognized Cassian’s suffering.

Maybe because they suffered too.

Vale’s voice exploded through the speakers again.

Furious now.

Panicked.

“TERMINATE THE ARCHIVE IMMEDIATELY.”

Hale didn’t move.

“Arthur!”

For the first time

Hale sounded tired when he answered.

“No.”

Vale went silent.

And somehow

That silence felt dangerous.

Very dangerous.

Cassian suddenly tensed violently in the chair.

Luca looked toward him instantly.

Cassian’s eyes widened slightly.

“Oh no.”

“What?” Luca demanded.

Cassian laughed once.

Weak.

Almost delirious.

“I think the system likes me now.”

The core pulsed violently.

Then every monitor in the chamber flashed the same line simultaneously:

SECONDARY ANCHOR ACCEPTED.

Everyone froze.

Seraphine blinked slowly.

“…what does that mean?”

Hale stared at the screen in visible disbelief.

“It means the network is adapting around Cassian’s neural pattern.”

Damon frowned sharply.

“That sounds bad.”

Hale looked toward Cassian quietly.

“It means if he dies now…”

A pause.

“The system dies with him.”
