“Derah and I…. We weren't friends!” Lyla wailed in a loud voice, sniffing uncontrollably. Her body trembled from fear, her legs struggling to keep her weight up.

“And?” Kain drawled, his stare coldly on Evie.

Lyla's words ran dry. She looked at Evie terrified. She had always looked up to her and carried out her dirty work, but right now? She was scared to the bone that she might die in Kain's hands.

“After we received orders, I-I was the one who told her to-” Lyla sniffed, “I told her to practice…since she had never done something like that before”

“Something like what?” Kain cut in, his face serious.

Lyla hesitated, a tear rolling down her cheek. “Kill… she had never killed a person before. T-that’s why Amelia started seeing her with knives”

This meant Lyla had murdered? Just how long has she been dancing to Evie's tone?

Kain's voice remained stern, his tone thundering “So you both were asked to kill Ava?” He allowed it to sink in, “Under my roof?”

“Don't leave” Liam's voice, deep and commanding, caused her to flinch. Ava turned, immediately lifting her hands to cover her mouth. She quickly apologized as he opened his eyes. “I'm so sorry, Mr. Liam, this time it was a mistake.” Her words were muffled behind her palm. “It's fine. I said not to leave” Liam reached for her hand and brought it down. But how did he know her hand was covering her mouth? Ava's heart skipped. She blinked at him, her face stiffening as though she’d seen a ghost.“What?” Liam asked, tilting his head slightly. “Is there something on my face?”Her lips parted, but no words came. The question wasn’t what haunted her. It was his accuracy, the way he moved with certainty. He wasn’t groping blindly. He had looked right at her.“You can’t remember anything from last night?” Liam probed gently, a faint smile tugging his lips. He tried to help her “You came in drunk in the middle of the night and—” “I remember!” Ava cut him off a little too quickly, desperate t

CHAPTER 40: The night she fell“Ava, you’re drunk.”Liam’s voice carried both amusement and disbelief as he steadied her.Ava tilted her head, raising her brows as if the world had suddenly become funnier than it should. “What? I’m not drunk.”The words left her lips, slurred, right before she stumbled forward. Liam’s arms shot out, catching her before she could hit the floor. He chuckled, shaking his head. “You are.” After a quick glance around the hall, he pulled her inside, shutting the door behind them. With careful hands, he guided her toward the bed. “Careful now. Watch your steps.”Ava suddenly snorted, halting in her steps “You’re blind, Liam, and you’re telling me to watch my steps?” She burst into laughter at her own joke. His lips curved slowly into a mischievous smile. He was about to turn her little drunk world upside down. “I can see,” he said. She blinked at him, still laughing. “Yeah, right.”“I’m not kidding, Ava. I can see you.”Her brows drew together, her amusemen

CHAPTER 40: Whiskey please,Evie raised her head. “What do you mean by that? I've given you all of me, Kain.” A line drew in between her brows. Kain's reply was blunt “I'm not talking about sex.” A frown settled on Evie's face. “What gift have you given me? I have given you money, jewelry, gold, and diamonds. What have you ever given this man you're in love with?” She couldn't respond, her lips parted with no words coming forth. She stammered “Y-you want a gift?” Kain frowned. ‘You’re asking me? Ava never asked’ He threw off the covers, climbing down the bed “Never mind,” he murmured, leaving Evie staring with confusion. What was all that about? The next morning, Ava had left for the hospital. She didn't bother meeting Liam that morning; she only informed Albert and told James to give her a ride. Her heels clicked softly against the polished hospital floor, the familiar antiseptic scent stinging her nose. For a moment, she almost felt like nothing had changed….as if she were sim

CHAPTER 39: I'm in love with you Ava froze at the doorway. The scene hit her harder than she expected…almost like a punch in the gut. She couldn't explain her feelings of betrayal. It felt as though she had just caught her boyfriend cheating on her. Evie broke away as she heard Ava come in. “Ava, you're back,” she said, feigning surprise. As if suddenly freed from a spell, Liam turned sharply to Ava's direction. “Ava,” his voice sounded uncertain, soft yet heavy with guilt. He couldn't see her. “I'm so sorry I didn't see you there,” said Evie, her malicious nature evident in her eyes. Ava narrowed her gaze on her. She was apologizing yet her hands were still sprawled all over Liam's body. Liam? He was allowing it.. allowing that good for nothing to kiss and touch him. Maybe he still loved her.The thought was heart clenching. “You know, since you were gone, I thought I'd help you take care of Liam” Evie smiled. Ava felt disgusted. She immediately remembered when Evie had told h

Ava blinked at her, shocked. “What? I-I don't even know who you are” Her face was the only thing Ava knew. What was going on?With an exhale, the woman started “My name is Amelia. Derah is my best friend. She was the only one I looked up to and trusted in the Mansion.” She paused after letting the information sink in.She continued, her eyes searching Ava's “I need your help because I can't investigate Derah’s death outside the mansion.”Amelia had a plan to find out the real culprits behind her friend's death. She even successfully got the public involved, but she got too emotional and was thrown out. She had sworn to make Evie and the rest pay, if only she hadn't acted out.Ava's brows knitted “What makes you think I'll help you, Amelia?” Ava asked. She would rather not get involved. She never knew that Derah was sent after her life. She was just convinced that Derah was indeed suicidal.“Because you're a good person, Ava,” said Amelia. “You're not like the rest of them” her fists c

Liam's hands shook. He was hesitating and knew it was bad.Kain watched him keenly. If Liam refused to eat, no matter the excuse, he would know for sure that he's healed. And if he still eats it, he'll be scathed by his allergies…. Either way was a win win for him.He watched, his excitement growing.Liam took a subtle breath. He asked. “This…. doesn't have shellfish in it, does it?”Kain almost chuckled. “It doesn't” he replied.Okay. Liam now understood Kain was testing if he could see. Gradually, he picked up his spoon, keeping his eyes steady. He thought of taking the bit that did not have shellfish in it, but Kain was watching.Liam swallowed, lifting the morsel to his lips. He opened his mouth, the spoon a minute away.He was going to do it. Kain was taken aback, he wasn't reluctant and showed no reaction when he responded that there wasn't any shellfish.Liam was just about to swallow up the morsel when Albert appeared on the scene.“Liam don't!” He said hurriedly.
