‘What the….?’ Liam's brows drew together. “Ava?” He pushed a button on the wheelchair and turned to face her. He couldn't see her. “What are you doing here? Shouldn't you have taken the day off?”

“I'm fine” Ava assured.

Liam wasn't convinced “A..are you sure? Nothing hurts anywhere?”

“I'm fine,” Ava said again with a groan. “The x-rays will be coming in today, I just couldn't miss it”

Liam frowned “For someone who just got into an accident, you're awfully cheery. And for the wrong reason, at that,” Liam had long given up on his legs. Ava's excitement changed nothing.

“Not for the wrong reason” Ava corrected. “You wanted to leave right? Well, if you're back on your feet, you won't need help from me anymore”

Liam ignored her, giving her a dry look. “How did you even convince them to consider surgery?”

Ava hesitated. “I…told Kain that I'd do the surgery myself,” she finally revealed. There was a short pause. Liam needed a moment to process those words.

“What?!” He exclaimed. “Wha

The voice came from behind, on the second line. The ones on the first line gave way to see who it was. She had bedhead brown hair packed In a bun. Her body quivered slightly, both her hands balled into fists by her side, and her face still looking downwards. “Depression? Derah wasn't depressed” she muttered loud enough for everyone to hear. Her teeth clenched “And she wasn't harboring any fucking suicidal thoughts” Her voice broke. “Derah wanted to live.” Teardrops were now visible on the marble floor below her. “She could've lived a long life, but you people killed her”Her voice became loud “YOU PEOPLE KILLED HER!” She snapped a glare at Albert with an accusing finger, and her eyes welled up with tears. “We?” Thelma scoffed “You saw it with your own eyes. She was with the gun she used to kill—” “Don't tell me that bullshit!” She cut in, leaving Thelma's jaw-dropping. A maid dared to cuss at her? The woman continued to rant “Ever since she and that bitch Lyla had served a meal

“What's going on out there?” Kain asked, fastening his cufflinks. He was asking the maid who had entered the room with a tray of his breakfast. “Haven't you seen the news, Master Kain?” She returned the question. “Derah's death is all over; almost every news station in California has an article already written about her.” Her voice suddenly hushed nervously. “They are all saying that the Blackwood family orchestrated her murder,” She was quick to add, “But of course, I don't believe them. I saw it. Derah unalived herself” Kain paid her no attention. Even though he had no hand in Derah's death, he trusted Thelma and Evie to take care of everything without letting the news escalate. But it seemed they were incompetent in that area too. It was only an intuition, but Kain believed that whoever sold the news out to the media had to be one of the other maids. After the maid serving him excused herself, he downed the black coffee and left whatever remained on the plate. He got downstair

Liam needed a moment to digest what he had heard. Ava was now free to resume her work at the hospital. That meant she would leave him. She could easily quit working for him and go back to her dream job. Why did it make him feel gloomy? He couldn't let Ava leave, he didn't want her to….at least not yet. After making up his mind, Liam hid her phone. He would keep the message a secret till the month was over to stop her from leaving. ‘I’ll delete the call log when my sight comes back again’ he said inwardly. *************Ava's eyes fluttered open. She placed her hand on her forehead after a mild headache hit her. How long was I asleep? She asked inwardly. She winced, shutting her eyes. She tried to open them again but saw a blurry image above her face. “Liam?” Her thoughts escaped her lips in a murmur. She thought she saw him. She rubbed on her eyes, clearing her vision, only to see that it was Albert. Her face showed disappointment. But then again, how did she expect Liam to come

Liam sat on his bed in his room. His face, deeply troubled, was fixated down to the marble floor. He kept thinking about what happened in Ava's room last night— the maid that tried to stab her. If he hadn't gone to her room that night, he would have been greeted by her corpse the next morning. And even though it didn't happen, the thought of it made him restless. “Son?” Albert entered the room, shutting the door behind him. “You called…..is something up?” He grabbed a stool nearby and sat opposite Liam. Liam didn't look up. He waited a while before disclosing “Someone's trying to kill Ava. If I wasn't there last night, she would be dead” A short silence settled between them. Albert broke the silence with a narrowed expression “Which of them did it?” He asked. ‘Them’ referring to either Kain, Thelma, or Evie. Liam clicked his tongue, “I don't know yet,” “But you've got an idea” Albert knew who was on Liam's mind. Liam shook his head “Kain wouldn't kill her” Albert sneered almost

Ava blinked twice and she looked at Liam. She could've sworn she heard him say something about her hair. But she wasn't sure. Maybe she imagined it. “Strange woman” Liam called out of the blue. “I'm suddenly curious” Ava turned to him, ignoring the fact that he called her strange, and asking “Curious about?” “Why do you want to help me so badly? You're the first woman to actually consider my condition and make a move towards it. What's in it for you?” he asked. Ava leaned back, taking her eyes back to the fountain. She gave his question a thought and opened her mouth to speak. “There was something I could do so why would I just sit back and watch?” She returned the question. Liam was quick to answer “Didn't your parents teach you to mind your business? Besides, you were brought to take care of me….. meddling in anything else would've gotten you fired” “But it didn't,” said Ava almost immediately. Liam scoffed, his tone sarcastic. “And you think it's because you're best buddies

Liam couldn't believe his ears, the shock on his face was evident. According to Albert, they had already tested the device and got it imported for him. All thanks to Ava and Finn, people he never thought would make a difference in his life. He could barely wait, his heart was pounding hard against his chest. The three welcomed the specialist whose trip from China down to the United States was sponsored by Albert. Albert gave him a good old handshake “Welcome Dr. Qin Shi” “Thank you, Mr. Albert Blackwood,” He took his hand in a shake. After which he scammed the faces in the room, his hands akimbo. “Well, then, shall we?” He asked. The moment they nodded, he signaled his assistants to come in with the orthotic device. They called it the “Mobility Enhancer Orthosis” The MEO was brought to Liam's bed where the dissembling took place. The more unfamiliar sounds Liam heard, the more anxious he grew. Dr. Qin Shi did the fixation himself, carefully showing each of them how Liam would we

A deep frown settled on Kain's face but only for a split second. He managed to keep his expression normal. “Sorry, grandfather,” he said, his anger boiling within. Thelma didn't sit right with this “Is he wrong to speak?! You didn't even ask about him, isn't he your grandson too?!” Albert responded in silence but gave Thelma a threatening glare. She immediately found her composure, taking her eyes back down to her food. There was tension in the air. Ava gulped. Albert brought his attention back to Ava “I'm listening” “I… he's gradually getting used to me forcing him to eat.” The words didn't come out right. “We'll talk later in the study,” said Albert simply. Ava nodded at this, and the table once again turned as silent as a graveyard. An hour later….. “Make yourself comfortable, don't fidget.” Albert ushered Ava to a seat after making sure the door to the study was shut. Once he settled in, he began, “Liam told me everything there is to know about you, and I'm currently doing

Ava's instincts immediately kicked in, and she dodged, missing the hit by a hair's length. Liam's eyes grew wide and his jaw dropped.“Grandfather?” Liam exclaimed. The fact that it was the first time he had seen him in a while made his heart real with unexplainable excitement. The man paid no attention to Liam, his stern gaze locked on Ava's small frame, which was glued to the wall. His presence was intimidating, his aura exuding malevolence.Ava knew who the man was. He was the original bearer of the Blackwood name, a retired marine soldier, Albert Blackwood.Albert pointed his fancy walking stick at Ava, saying gruffly “I haven't seen this one before”“She's new,” said Liam. Albert narrowed his eyes on her. “I can see that.” he gave Ava a once-over, scrutinizing her from head to toe. Ava swallowed hard, she could barely hold eye contact with him. Albert asked “What were doing to him? Taking advantage of the fact that he can neither see nor walk” Ava opened her mouth to speak, but

Ava remained seated, her eyes narrowed evenly on Evie. “What is the meaning of this, Evie?” A deep frown spread across her face. Evie picked up her glass “This is a glimpse of what I can do, Ava. I've got power that you can only ever imagine” She took a sip, dropped the glass, and continued“Be it Liam or Kain, I don't mess around with my men. And I'll go as far as gouging out the eyes of many women who would look at them.” She paused a bit “I'm sure you've heard of my engagement to Kain, correct?” “And?” Ava raised a brow. She wasn't afraid of Evie or the fact that a gun was being pressed into the back of her head. Evie's lips twitched. “That means he belongs to me and no one else. This is my warning to you Ava. Stay. Away. If you become a hurdle to my relationship with Kain, I won't hesitate to get rid of you. I don't care who else out there wants to kill you; I'll be next in line,” she threatened. A short silence settled between them. Ava couldn't hide the shock on her face. Sh
