LOGIN"Ava, don't waste your time on a broken man like me. I can't give you the happiness you deserve." "Liam, I don't care about that. You're more to me than your past or your scars." Ava Patel, a driven and brilliant surgeon, has always put her career first, leaving little room for love. Her heart, guarded by ambition, has never wavered—until she meets Liam Blackwood. Once a powerful magnate, Liam's world shattered when an accident took his sight, his mobility, and his confidence. Now, he's a shadow of the man he used to be, convinced he's unworthy of love. But Ava sees beyond his brokenness, drawn to the man he is beneath the pain. Yet, Liam resists, certain that his love would only hold her back. Can Ava break through his defenses and show him that love is not about perfection, but about acceptance? Or will Liam's insecurities doom their chance at happiness?
View More“The director would like to see you, Dr. Patel,” the small woman announced, dressed in a formal nurse outfit, and left.
Ava groaned, what did he want now?
After knocking, she was invited in. The name tag on his desk read Director Mark Bryson. A strict African American who attained his height as the director through nepotism.
Ava heaved a painful sigh and cursed inwardly at the sight of her superior, Dr. Luke standing next to director Bryson with a plaster on his nose bridge.
With a hand gesture, director Bryson offered her a seat.
Ava decided to apologize first “Director Bry—”
“Ava” he cut in, using her first name instead of her designation and last name. “Who are you to Dr. Luke?” He asked
Ava held her tongue, what kind of question is this? She asked inwardly. Men here in the hospital were infamous for always belittling women and that's what the director was trying to do now.
“I am his subordinate, Sir,” she answered brilliantly.
“Inferior,” Director Bryson corrected, “Ava you're inferior to Dr. Luke. I can't believe you hit your superior just because he ordered you not to partake in the next surgery!”
Ava’s eyes widened, she looked at Dr. Luke, half amused. That bastard lied to the director. She had to prove her innocence now. “Director Brys—”
“A simple case which would've been solved through mere dialogue, instead, you Ava Patel chose violence,” he cut in and scolded
With furrowed brows, Ava tried to explain “That's not the case sir, I—”
He cut in again, “No matter the case, you're never to hit the one who is guiding you but you've shown yourself today. Ava Patel, You're suspended!” he declared
“W-What?” He didn't even give her a chance to explain
“You're suspended, until further notice” he added
With a scowl, Ava’s voice elated “That's not fair! You didn't even give me a chance to say anything, how can you do this!?”
“You forget, Ava, that I'm the director.” Dr. Luke reminded her
Ava laughed dryly. “This is because I turned down your offer right?” She understood now that he was retaliating when she refused his advances.
These two old men are in cahoots.
Director Bryce frowned. “Don't say more than you should, Ava; I have the power to fire you now and make sure you don't ever get a decent job again!” he threatened.
She bit her lower lip, blinking continuously to stop the tears that were forming in her eyes.
Brandon had a smug smile on his face; it made Ava regret why she punched him so weakly; if she knew she would be suspended because of it, she would've given him a scar instead.
“Thank you,” she said through gritted teeth and stomped back to her office.
As Ava packed her things, different ways for revenge clouded her mind but her rational side took over. She couldn't harm either of them even if she wanted to.
As it stands, since the two men had grudges against her, ‘till further notice’ may never come at all.
One of the things Ava disliked was being idle. It's been two years since she became a doctor and ever since then, she has worked nonstop. Even during free days and holidays, she preferred doing research and studying to going on vacations and spending time with friends and family.
Ava Patel lived in a cozy apartment in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, surrounded by colorful Victorian homes and a short walk from Presidio Bay General Hospital, where she worked.
On a Saturday morning, Ava was up already and behind her computer, surfing the web for a short-term part-time job she could do in the meantime for money.
It had been hours and all she saw were jobs that either seemed suspicious or completely not to her taste and schedule.
About to close up, an ad for a job popped up. She read out loud, “Make $800,000 from being a personal care assistant every month. For more inquiries, call or text xxx-xxx-xxx”
She paused before peering into the screen. “$800,000!” She yelled out, shocked. Regardless of how skeptical she was about it, she clicked on the ad.
Ava felt her stomach tie into knots as she asked, her voice carefully even. “Um… is that the Children’s Hospital charity gala happening next Friday?” Glenn’s eyes lit up, and for a second he looked in his twenties again, hopeful and unguarded. “Oh, you know about it? You have changed then.” He leaned forward, elbows on the table, the candlelight catching in his grey eyes. “What do you say? With me?” Ava swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. The risotto turned to sand in her mouth. She set her fork down. “I’m sorry, Glenn, but I can’t.” The fire in his eyes disappeared instantly, like someone had blown out a matchstick. He leaned back, his disappointment conspicuous, written in the sudden slump of his shoulders and the way his smile faded. “Oh,” he breathed. Ava looked at him. His emotions had always been so obvious. Then and now. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and it was both his best and worst quality. She wasn’t obliged to explain anything to him—why she couldn’t go with him. An
Glenn… he was stunning. The younger version of him suddenly played in Ava's mind. Glenn looked different now, even she couldn't deny it. His appearance, aura, and attitude, all seemed to have grown. Even then at the hospital. Then, as if drawn by her presence alone, Glenn’s eyes snapped up and their eyes met. He didn’t smile immediately. He was caught between emotions, and Ava could see it. The feeling of relief warring with disbelief. He hated that a bigger part of him doubted she would understand the message, that she would remember the old days, and that she would come. But then here she was. Standing beautifully at a distance. From his perspective, Ava looked like she had stepped out of the moon itself. Her hair dyed silver, caught the moon’s glow, turning almost white, the dark roots showing beneath. It framed her face, making her auburn eyes look darker and deeper. She wore a simple black slip gown, but on her it looked breathtaking. She stood there with her chin lifted, sho
“W-what is the meaning of this?” Ava said carefully, one hand gripping the strap of her bag tightly. Her brows were furrowed, and her pulse had picked up for reasons that had nothing to do with seeing Glenn. Weren’t they a little too serious? Their expressions…. Aren't they too uninviting for this kind of establishment? It was a rooftop restaurant not a nightclub in Vegas. Since when did rooftop restaurants need bouncers who looked like they moonlighted as private security for heads of state? “What is your business here, little miss?” one of them asked. His voice was so deep that Ava felt a vibration in her lower abdomen.‘Little miss?’ The remark landed as condescending. She was a twenty eight year old surgeon, and she’d just spent hours in an OR. She straightened her posture. “I’m having a meeting here with an important person,” she said, her voice cool despite the heat rising in her cheeks. “Are you hoarding away a customer?” The two men exchanged glances, their expressions unc
Ava couldn’t believe her eyes. On the dining table sat her mother, Rose, and opposite her was their neighbor, Joe Hansen. Ava swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “Ma?” Ava called out, her tone reflecting her confusion as to why the man they’d both agreed was weird, creepy, even, was sitting at their table. And by the looks of their half-empty plates, they had already finished eating and were just talking. Laughing, even. “Oh, welcome home, dear. How was work?” Rose smiled sweetly, the kind of smile she reserved for church friends and potential in-laws. She gestured for Ava to come closer, patting the chair beside her. “Thanks, Ma,” said Ava, setting her bag down but not moving. Her eyes stayed on Joe. Joe cut in, leaning back in his chair as if he belonged there. “Welcome back. Your mother here tells me your name is Ava. Such a sweet name.” He said it with a smile that revealed his chipped front tooth, one that a person would get from a hard fall or a fist fight. Ava felt uncomfo
“What? I completely forgot about that” Ava chuckled dryly. Albert hummed low, though he didn't believe a word she said. Who would forget being promised such a large amount? He told her politely “Thanks to you, Liam's surgery this afternoon was successful….” On the second floor landing, Thelma and
Kain blinked twice. Not that marrying Evie had slipped from his mind, he just seldom put it into thought. Work had been hectic lately, with gathering up stocks and profits while handling investments. The thought of setting up the wedding soon gave him an idea. He nodded in response after a short w
For the first time since she had stepped into the Blackwood mansion, Ava's heart felt heavy as she climbed those steps. Her brows were furrowed, her eyes staring blankly. A throb pressed against her chest, fingers trembling, dread curling in her veins. Liam wouldn't. She kept muttering to herself
“Hello? Finn, is there a problem?” Albert asked. He was shocked to have received the call. He was currently on his way to Presidio Bay General Hospital. After what Liam told him, he had to move fast. The sooner he secured Ava's job, the better. “Ava and I have great news” Finn grinned from ear to
