LAILA’S POV

The cold wind clawed at my cheeks as we sprinted through the night. My legs burned, muscles screaming with every pounding step, but I didn’t dare slow down—not when Alex’s fingers were laced through mine, his grip so tight it was almost painful. Not when I could still feel the ghost of Noah’s blade pressed against my throat.

We didn’t stop until the trees swallowed us whole, the shadows of the forest closing around us like a shield. Only then did Alex whirl toward me, his chest heaving, his eyes wild—a storm of fury, terror, and something so raw it made my own breath catch.

“You okay?” His voice was rough, scraped raw from shouting, from growling, from the sheer force of his desperation.

I swallowed hard, my lungs still on fire. “I will be.” The words came out thin, shaky.

In an instant, his arms were around me, crushing me against his chest like he was afraid I’d dissolve into smoke. His heartbeat hammered against my ear, fast and frantic. I thought I’d lost you. His whis

LAILA’S POVThen reality settled back in. I glanced over my shoulder. Jackson hadn’t moved, but his stare was locked onto us, his arms crossed, his jaw set. He’s not letting this go."He’s not going to relax anytime soon," I muttered.Alex exhaled, unfazed. "I wouldn’t either, if I were him." His voice was steady, sincere. "He’s doing what I’d do. What I will do—for you."The words struck deep, unraveling something inside me. I nodded, biting my lip to keep it from trembling. "Thank you. For tonight. For… everything."His gaze never wavered. "I meant every word. Even if I have to say it a hundred times before you believe me."I shot him a look—half warning, half something softer. "Easy, Alpha. You’re already bleeding all over my party."A slow, crooked smile. "Worth it."Damn him.My heart stuttered. I turned before I could do something reckless—before I forgot we were supposed to keep our distance. "See you around," I said, slipping into the crowd, pretending I didn’t feel his eyes b

LAILA’S POVThe world stopped. My breath hitched, trapped somewhere between my lungs and my throat, as if the air itself had turned to stone. The scent of iron—sharp and metallic—filled my nose. Alex’s blood dripped onto the polished floor, each drop a red, glistening stain against the wood.Thud. Thud. Thud. My heartbeat was too loud, drowning out the music, the murmurs, even the rustle of fabric as every wolf in the room turned to watch.Alex knelt before the elders, his head bowed, his palm split open from the ritual blade. His voice, rough but steady, still echoed in my skull."By blood and by bond, I vow to wait until she is of age. I will be her shield... not her temptation."The words wrapped around me, heavy and unshakable. A vow like that wasn’t just spoken—it was carved into the soul. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t think. My fingers trembled at my sides, nails digging into my palms just to feel something other than the storm inside me.He did this. For me.The Alex I first met—co

ALEX’S POVThree days. Three days since Jackson had allowed Logan and me to stay, and still, every glance thrown our way was edged with suspicion. We were intruders here. Former enemies. And no matter how much we kept our heads down, the weight of their distrust pressed against my ribs like a knife. This morning, the kitchen had been no different. The moment we stepped inside, conversations stuttered to a halt. Eyes tracked us—sharp, assessing. The scent of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon should have been comforting, but all I tasted was bitterness.Logan nudged me with his elbow, his jaw tight, but he said nothing. We ate in silence, the scrape of forks against plates the only sound between us. Outside, the crisp autumn air did little to ease the tension coiling in my chest. Then, we saw him. Liam. Jackson’s younger brother. Laila’s twin. He walked toward us, hands shoved into his pockets, his posture relaxed in a way Jackson’s never was. And then—unexpectedly—he smiled. Small

Karen’s POVLater that night, Jackson’s breath warmed the crook of my neck, slow and steady, his arm a heavy, possessive weight around my waist. His fingers twitched against my hip—even in sleep, he couldn’t let go. The scent of sweat and something addictive, something him, clung to my skin, wrapping around me like a second embrace.I traced idle circles along his forearm, feeling the ridges of old scars beneath my fingertips. His body, usually coiled tight with barely leashed fury, had finally relaxed. The rigid lines of his shoulders had softened, his jaw unclenched. For the first time in weeks, he wasn’t the Alpha. He wasn’t the storm that wanted to destroy everything in his path. He was just Jackson. My sweet, possessive mate. My fingers drifted up, threading through his tousled hair. The strands were softer than I expected, slipping between my fingers like silk.I swallowed hard, my throat tightening. How many nights had he spent alone, fighting his own demons?“I’ve got you,” I

KAREN’S POVAs soon as he crawled on top of me, his hand slid under my shirt, and I broke the kiss. Our eyes met, and he smiled softly before whispering, “I need you, please.” As if he needed to beg. As if this wasn’t the only thing I’d ever wanted the entire time I was waiting for him to come home. Well… the second thing. The first? His presence, here with me.Nodding softly, I pulled him back down to me, reconnecting our lips as Jackson squeezed my breast gently. My body relaxed into the bed, legs widening as his thumb caressed my nipple. Kissing me deeper, he alternated between each of my breasts before slipping his fingers between my folds.I was already wet—soaking wet. There was really no need for foreplay. Besides, we’d wasted too much time these past few days to let another moment pass without being together. I was literally aching for him.Jackson seemed to be on the same page because he quickly spread my legs and pressed my knees into the bed. My eyes lowered to his abs as h

JACKSON’S POVThe moment I stepped through the front door, the weight of everything I’d done crashed into me like a tidal wave. My fists ached from clenching them too tight, my knuckles raw and throbbing. My head pounded, each heartbeat a hammer against my skull.Did I make the right choice?Letting Alex stay—letting him near Laila after everything—felt like swallowing glass. But the look on her face when I’d hesitated… the way her breath had hitched, her eyes wide with fear… I couldn’t have ripped him away. Not without breaking her.And yet, the doubt gnawed at me. What if this is a mistake? What if he hurts her in the end?The thoughts clawed at my chest, relentless—until I pushed open the bedroom door and saw her.Karen.She stood by the window, the golden light from the bulb painting her in soft hues, her arms crossed tightly over her chest like she was holding herself together. But the second she turned, the second her warm eyes met mine, the storm inside me stilled. She didn’t s
