Chapter 3

Author: Eva
Everyone knew that Romolo Santis, the Santis family's heir, had been kidnapped and poisoned as a child. He hurt his spine and had to be confined to a wheelchair for life. Now, he was plagued by many illnesses, and rumors said he wouldn't live past 30.

The Fabbri family's heir was a notorious good-for-nothing who spent his days lounging in bars with models. The number of women he brought home every year was simply beyond count.

The buzzing was unbearable. I was about to leave, but Leonora held my shoulder and said, "I almost forgot. Viviana has been seeing someone. She was on a date during the days of the trade summit."

The socialities erupted in laughter.

"We thought she was a business prodigy. Turns out she's just another lovesick fool!"

"Leonora is the true prodigy. That analytical report she wrote was a masterpiece."

My expression darkened. But before I could explain myself, the sound of glass shattering cut through the room.

"My face!" The hostess of the gala, Carla Greco, covered her face and screamed. "Who sent the perfume? It nearly disfigured me!"

A shattered perfume bottle lay on the ground, while Carla's face was breaking out in crimson hives. It looked like a serious allergic reaction, for she had clawed at her skin until it bled.

The butler picked up the broken bottle and looked in our direction. "The two young ladies of the Rosa family brought this."

Leonora immediately pointed at me and explained, "Viviana had this custom-made for you, Lady Carla! She must have done this on purpose!"

I glared at Leonora. She was a fool. The Greco family was so powerful—if they truly believed this was an attempted attack, the entire Rosa family would be implicated.

When the bodyguards swarmed us, Leonora looked like she was about to faint from terror.

After the examination, the doctor declared that there was no poison in the perfume. It was just loaded with synthetic ingredients.

Everyone knew that Carlo was allergic to artificial scents. She could only ever use perfume made from 100% natural extracts.

Leonora shot me a venomous look and said, "If you don't believe me, you can ask the bodyguard who came with us. He's the one who carried the gifts inside."

I looked at Marco, hoping that he might tell the truth. However, what he said next turned my blood to ice.

"Lady Carlo, the perfume…" He clenched his fists and looked at me guiltily. "Ms. Viviana handcrafted it herself.

"What do you have to say for yourself, Viviana Rosa?"

I let out a bitter laugh and hid my disappointment. I shook my head. What else could I say?

Marco was the Santis family's son. If he wanted me to take the fall, he had countless ways to make the charges stick.

Very well. I would consider this payment for saving my life.

Carlo instructed solemnly, "We shall proceed according to the laws of this family—12 rounds of electric shock."

After I was tied to the chair, the butler pressed the baton into my chest. My body convulsed, and every nerve screamed in protest.

The mocking gazes of the crowd felt like salt to my wound.

I opened my eyes and saw Marco and Leonora in an intimate embrace. Her back was turned to me, her face buried in his chest to hide away from the gory scene.

I clenched my jaw and stayed silent. After 12 rounds of electric shock, my mouth was oozing with blood. I closed my eyes as tears rolled down my cheeks.

Marco and I were even now. I had paid my debts after this incident.

From now on, we were strangers.

"You think you can just be the Don of the Santis family? Marco, you can't make that decision yourself," I said with a sneer."And why should anyone else get to decide my fate?" Marco squeezed my hand against his chest. His grip was so hard I thought my bones would snap. "I have been secretly hiding on the West Coast all these years. The only thing that kept me alive was the thought of our future. How could I stand by and watch you play the doting wife to my crippled brother?"I scoffed and replied, "A future with me? You nearly killed me. We don't have a future together."Marco grabbed my shoulders and shouted. "Listen to me! The enemy has killed Leonora. Once I get rid of Romolo and become the Santis family's Don, we can go anywhere we want and start over.""Start over? You pushed me into the abyss, Marco. You!" I hissed.Marco leaned in to kiss me. He wouldn't let go even after I bit down on his lip. Suddenly, the van screeched to a halt. The momentum sent me crashing to the

Leonora collapsed on the floor. She lunged for Marco and clutched his ankles."Say something, Marco! You wouldn't let me marry that playboy from the Fabbri family, right? Don't you want me to be part of the Santis family? I could be there with Viviana. We belong together!"Marco kicked her away in disgust. "Get off me!"As Leonora broke down, Papa signaled his bodyguards to drag her out. "This is for the good of the family. Besides, isn't it great to be a member of the Fabbri family?"Costantino watched Leonora with a lecherous gaze as he practically undressed her in his mind.Don Fabbri shook Papa's hand and said, "With a daughter as talented as yours by our side, our business will be unstoppable."Leonora was forced to sit with the Fabbris during the dinner banquet. Her eyes were brimming with tears as Costantino roamed suggestively up her thigh.Marco sat beside Romolo and me. His eyes were locked on me the entire time. To twist the knife, I tended to Romolo's every need, l

My words hit Marco hard. He collapsed onto the cold marble floor, slamming his fist against the ground in a fit of rage and despair. "You saved me…"He finally understood why Leonora had spent years forcing her way into his life and clawing for his attention, yet never once giving him that same warmth he'd felt in Mortira. He had been plagued by an inner turmoil, a phantom ache in his chest every time he hurt me. He was a guilty man who had failed to recognize his savior.Marco looked at me, his gaze brimming with remorse.I smirked and replied, "You hurt me again and again. You abandoned me in the wild forest so that Leonora could have her moment to shine. You stole my report and handed it to her so that she could appear talented. You conspired with Leonora to frame me for poisoning Lady Carla, leaving me to be tortured by electric shock. "Your men even drove Rita to her death. She's the housekeeper I grew up with."My voice rose with every word, fueled by pure rage."Is thi

"Don't reveal my identity to her," Marco whispered to Romolo and me. He then turned his back on Leonora and left. The gala celebrating his return to the Santis family was set for tomorrow. He was probably intending to go public with his engagement to Leonora that night. The mafia world was already buzzing with rumors before the gala began. A young master had ordered a rare, 20-carat diamond ring so that he could propose to Leonora. When others sought to confirm the news with Leonora, she replied mysteriously, "Oh, it must be the Santis' younger son. He has been pursuing me for quite some time."I wasn't interested in the mafia families' gossip and focused instead on my afternoon tea. While Romolo and I were selecting the best fruit from the platter, I felt someone was watching over my back.I asked Adelina to accompany me to the garden to get some sun. I wanted to find out the source of that stare. It was Marco. He followed after me and lost my trail near a secluded wing of the

I walked into the church dressed in a designer dress. I was moments away from becoming Romolo's wife as we stood before the priest at the altar.Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the sound of frantic running.Marco burst into the church, his gaze sweeping frantically across the crowd. "Leonora!" he bellowed. He was certain that I would never stoop to marry Romolo, the crippled heir of the Santis family. Thus, he feared that Leonora was about to become Romolo's wife. Marco was livid. "No wonder Viviana sent me all the way to Sandola. She wants Leonora to marry while I'm gone," he thought. His hand was on the gun holster, looking as though he wanted to put a bullet in my head. As he ran toward the bride, someone pulled his leather jacket and said, "You're finally here! Where have you been, Marco? I couldn't reach you."Marco lowered his gaze and saw Leonora smiling sweetly at him. If the bride wasn't Leonora, then it had to be… His heart skipped a beat when the truth hi
