Chapter Six - Live System

Michael

The door locked behind us and a mechanical hum ran through the building.

The last thing I needed was another locked room with Celeste Hartwell. Particularly after the library.

Three minutes earlier, her hand had been inside my trousers and mine had been under her dress. She had stopped. I had stopped. That should have restored a clean operational boundary.

It had not.

Her lipstick was still slightly blurred at one corner. She hadn't noticed.

I had. That was becoming a problem.

Celeste turned.

“That sounded expensive.”

“It was.”

I crossed the office and tried the handle anyway.

Nothing.

I ran the exits. I’d mapped four on the way in. Two had already closed. The lockdown wasn’t treating us like intruders. It was slower than that. It was reading us, and deciding.

“Two minutes,” I said.

“To what?”

“Before we lose the stairwell.”

Celeste lifted one heel.

“You brought me here in shoes designed by Satan.”

“You chose them.”

“You approved the dress.”

“I didn’t approve the shoes.”

“You looked at them.”

“That isn’t approval.”

“Men have built entire marriages on less.”

We moved.

At the first junction, I stopped. The route I had mapped before we entered was blocked by two staff members redirecting guests toward the main hall.

Wrong.

I reached for Celeste’s arm. She stepped aside before I touched her.

“No.”

“East stair,” I said. “Down to the loading dock, out through the kitchens. Stay behind me.”

“No.”

“Celeste.”

“Look at the room, Michael. Not your map.”

I looked at the room, because arguing cost more than looking.

She tipped her chin toward the far side, where a woman in staff black was murmuring to a silver-haired couple and steering them, gently, toward a door I hadn’t logged as an exit because it was marked private.

“The staff aren’t panicking,” she said. “They’re sorting. Watch who they walk and who they leave. The nobodies are being funnelled toward your kitchen. The real money is being taken out the quiet way. Whoever runs this building is protecting the guests who matter and feeding everyone else to the exit that’s about to have men standing in it.”

I watched for four seconds. She was right. The pattern was there once she named it, obvious and invisible at once, the thing my systems would have flagged as staffing noise.

“How do you know the private door isn’t the trap?”

“Because the woman in emerald just went through it, and she’s wearing eight hundred thousand pounds of jewellery. Nobody herds the whales toward the harpoon.”

“Then we’re whales.”

“Darling, tonight we’re whatever gets us out. Take my hand and look bored.”

I took her hand. Her fingers were cold and steady. I disliked how much I noticed the steady.

We joined the quiet current of important people. Celeste changed as we walked. Her shoulders loosened. Her face arranged itself into the pleasant blankness of the very rich, a woman who has never once queued for anything. A waiter glanced at us. She gave him the small nod of somebody confirming he’d done well, and he looked away, reassured by a rank she’d invented on the spot.

“You’re enjoying this,” I said.

“I’m functioning. There’s a difference.” A beat. “You’d know, if you ever tried it.”

I didn’t answer. She was threading us past a knot of guests without appearing to steer anything, one hand light on my sleeve, and the part of my brain that files everything logged the warmth of it and filed a complaint I intended to ignore.

The private door let onto a service lift, then a garden exit onto a mews. Cold air. No men. No lockdown.

She’d walked us out through the one route I would have dismissed.

“You saw that in ten seconds,” I said.

“I’ve been reading which door I’m allowed through my whole life. You people call it instinct when a dog does it and gossip when a woman does it.” She let go of my hand. “You’re welcome.”

Outside, I pulled a small drive from my pocket.

Celeste noticed.

“What did you steal?”

“Copied.”

“From where?”

“The office terminal.”

“You were doing that while I was being fingered by the surveillance system?”

I looked at her. She smiled sweetly.

“That sentence made you uncomfortable.”

“No.”

“Liar.”

I connected the drive to a clean tablet. One file had survived the shutdown. A payment trail. An internal routing tag attached to the transfer that put a quarter of a million pounds into her account.

I read it again in the mews light.

“What is it?” she asked.

“The money that landed on you was tagged. Internal reference. It ties the transfer to a name Huxley used in his private files.” I put the device away. “Asterion.”

“A company?”

“No.” I looked at her. “Asterion isn’t a company. It’s a client designation.”

She went quiet. On Celeste, quiet is the loudest thing she does.

“So somebody didn’t just frame me,” she said. “They filed me. Under a client.”

“Yes.”

“That’s almost flattering. I’ve been decorative, ignored, and occasionally auctioned. Never filed.”

“It isn’t a compliment.”

“No. I don’t imagine anything about you is.”

“Whose client?”

“That’s the question I’ve spent twelve years failing to answer.”

  • Lover by Design   Chapter Five - Pretend

CelesteMichael tried to teach me how to pretend to be rich. I let him go for almost a minute because it was entertaining.“Stay close to me.”“How close?”“Within reach.”“So less girlfriend, more kidnapping victim.”“We need to appear established.”I fastened an earring. “We’ve been together three years.”Michael stopped. His cover story had given us six months.“Why three?”“Six months invites questions. Three years makes people assume they’re rude for not already knowing.”“That creates unnecessary history.”“History is what makes relationships believable.”His expression suggested he remained unconvinced.I picked up my clutch.“Darling, I’ve been pretending to like rich men since I was sixteen. Keep up.”His expression was priceless.“Now, You’ll follow my read, and if I touch your elbow twice it means you’re talking too much.”He went quiet. I’d surprised him. I was starting to enjoy that. The event occupied a glass room above the river, all champagne and low laughter and peopl

MichaelShe argued with me while people were trying to kill her. I found that I respected it.“Stay low. Follow the wall to the back stairs.” I kept my hand at the small of her back, guiding, not gripping. “Don’t stand until I say.”“Don’t manage me.”“Then don’t stand up.”We went out through the loading bay and into a service lane I’d mapped before she arrived, because I map everything before anyone arrives. That is the discipline. You remove the room’s ability to surprise you. Then you watch people, and people surprise you anyway, and the trick is to have built enough margin to survive it.Celeste Hartwell was margin I had not built enough of.I had a model of her. I’d had it for months. Beautiful, brittle, hungry for admission to rooms that never wanted her. The model said she would freeze under fire and let me move her. The model said she would follow instructions from a competent stranger. The model was three for ten tonight, and dropping.“Where are we going?” she asked, half a

CelesteI didn’t wait for Adrian’s security people. I never do well with being handed a schedule. While the flat filled with Adrian’s phone calls, I slipped out the service entrance and took a cab to the old consultancy office in Clerkenwell. Nobody knew I still kept it. I’d stopped paying attention to it years ago, which was exactly why I trusted what was inside: a locked drawer of offline notes from the season Anne first came smiling into my life.I let myself into the dark and knew, before I found the switch, that I wasn’t alone. I knew because the blinds were open.I never left them open. The managing partner in the building opposite had spent eighteen months pretending not to watch me make coffee, and I disliked rewarding persistence.I closed the door behind me.“Hello?”A lamp clicked on across the room.He sat in my chair as if it had always been his, dark coat, still hands, watching me the way you watch a door you’re expecting to open.I knew the face from nothing. I knew the

CelesteThey put me in a small grey room and asked me the same questions in four different shapes.Had I met Sebastian Huxley? No. Had I ever spoken with him.? No. Who had I been with at The Veil last night? That was where I wanted to stopped talking, because the honest answer was I don’t know his name, and I’d learned by then how that sentence would look in a headline. But some part of me was past caring by now. So I just shrugged.“I’ll ask you again. Who was with you in that video at The Veil last night?”I sighed. “No idea.”“You don’t know his name?”The cocked eyebrow was the only sign that she didn’t quite believe me.“No.”“You didn’t ask?”“No.”Her pen stopped. I smiled without humour. Fuck it.“Yes, Inspector. Women occasionally have anonymous sex too. It was an exciting year for feminism.”The officer beside the door developed a sudden interest in the carpet. Shaw remained unimpressed.“Is it Sebastian Huxley with you in the video?”“I did not sleep with Sebastian Huxley.”

  • Lover by Design   Chapter One - No Names

***Lover by Design is the sequel to Bride by Default and begins six months after Sienna and Adrian’s story. While this book follows Celeste Hartwell and Michael Harbinger as the main couple, it continues the conspiracy, characters and events introduced in Bride by Default. For the best reading experience, I recommend reading Book One first.***CelesteHis mouth was on the inside of my thigh, and I still didn’t know his name. That was the point. The whole point.I hadn’t come to The Veil to be courted. I didn’t want candlelight, or a man deciding I was special, or the soft violence of being chosen. For six months the world had made me a story about being left. Tonight I wanted one hour that belonged to me and to no headline. He’d let me set every step of it. That undid me before his hands did. In the gold dark of the private room he had waited, watching me through that plain black mask, steady and unhurried, until I closed the last of the distance myself. Until I was the one who push
