Chapter 3

Author: Wishing Heart
Ruby's expression frosted over. "Is this how someone who's asking for money should act?"

I tried to explain myself, but she cut me off with a raised hand. She continued, "I know what you want to say. You want to tell me Ricky fell by himself, right?"

I closed my mouth and sneered.

This wasn't the first time Ricky had slandered me. Nor was it the first time Ruby had misunderstood me.

I was the fool, trusting too much in the love she had for me to see that the two of them were already secretly involved.

I crouched and slowly picked up the money, piece by piece, feeling numb inside as Ruby stepped on my hand and looked down at me. "Apologize to Ricky!"

The soft rubber sole crushed the last shred of dignity I had left. I resigned myself to it and said, "I'm sorry!"

But Ruby wasn't satisfied. "You should be sincere about it."

I bit down on my lip, then knelt hard on the floor and said, "I'm sorry!"

Then I raised my head and looked at Ruby indifferently. "Is that good enough?"

Her chest heaved. Then she sighed and crouched down, helping me gather the cash. "I know you're devastated by what happened to your dad, but you shouldn't let out your frustration on Ricky. Don't do this again."

I replied, "I won't…"

There was no future between us anymore.

Ruby paid part of the bill in cash and shoved the rest into my hand. "Take me to your dad!"

Dad didn't like Ruby. Even though she was rich, to him, she was just a psychopathic old woman. He had never treated her kindly or given her a warm welcome. But this time, he acted completely out of character and talked with Ruby for a long time.

I knew he wanted Ruby to take care of me. He was afraid I'd be all alone once he was gone.

A deep ache gnawed at my heart. My throat felt like it was being squeezed tight. I didn't dare to tell Dad that Ruby was a jackal in sheep's clothing.

I didn't want to completely fall out with Ruby. After all, I needed her money and connections to find a kidney donor.

That night, she found a suitable kidney. As long as it arrived the next day, Dad would survive.

The next day, I waited from dawn to dusk with hope in my heart. But Ruby still didn't arrive with the kidney.

The orange-red light fell across my sleeping dad, making him look like a hazy illusion that could disappear at any moment. The fear of losing the only family I had gripped my heart tightly.

With trembling hands, I called the number again, the same one I'd tried 99 times without getting through. This time, it did.

Ruby's friend, Miriam Kerr, answered.

It turned out Ruby had spent the whole day taking care of Ricky, who had suddenly got a headache. Dad's lifesaving kidney was with her.

I raced over to Ruby's villa, not bothering to look at the two of them kissing on the bed. I grabbed the cooler she'd thrown into the corner and ran outside.

There was only half an hour left. As long as I made it to the hospital within 30 minutes, the kidney could still be used.

I had just hailed a cab when Ruby's bodyguards dragged me to the villa's rooftop. Ricky stood outside the railing, crying his heart out.

Ruby's expression was grim as she grabbed me by the collar and marched me to Ricky. "You suddenly burst in and saw us doing that just now, so Ricky is afraid you'll misunderstand. Now he wants to end his life! Tell him you didn't get the wrong idea!"

I snorted. "What wrong idea? That you're mother and son on the surface, but actually a pair of sick freaks who kiss and sleep together?"

Ruby slapped me hard across the face. She glared at me, her voice shaking with rage. "What the hell are you talking about? If you can't convince Ricky to come back down, then your dad won't get his kidney, and no doctor will dare operate on him!"

I stared at her in disbelief, but there was no changing her mind. She had already kept the kidney waiting for so long just for Ricky.

Who knew what else she would be capable of?

Dad was still waiting for me.

I shouted, "There was no misunderstanding! You two are completely innocent, just a loving mother and son!"

A smug glint flickered in Ricky's eyes. He deliberately dragged his feet again, taking several more minutes before finally coming down.

I forced down the hatred raging inside me and rushed to the hospital, but the doctor told me that the kidney couldn't be used anymore.

And it was all because of the few minutes Ricky deliberately wasted.

I broke down into uncontrollable sobs.

Until I received a familiar, beautifully wrapped gift box.

Ever since that day, Ruby kept pestering me. I repeatedly told her I didn't remember her anymore, but she refused to believe me.She cast aside all her pride and dignity, clutching roses as she waited outside my door. Bouquet after bouquet withered in her arms as she endured one long night after another. Thanks to her hounding me, Wendy's affection for me kept increasing. Soon, it reached 95%. I was just one step away from succeeding. When Wendy's car appeared at the end of the street, I pushed the window open. Ruby's eyes lit up. She said, "Archie, you're finally willing to see me. Can we just let the past stay in the past? From now on, I'll treat you right. If I ever lie to you again, may lightning strike me down!"Ruby held up the roses and shouted, "Archie, I love you!""Hmph, how dare you say you love Archie when you don't know he loves lilies instead of roses!" Wendy sneered.Ruby's face flushed.Wendy puffed out her chest, holding the lilies in one hand and my house key

I smiled. "Yeah, I like you. But that doesn't mean I can't give other people my number!"I tilted my head and looked straight into Wendy's eyes. "Wendy, who are you to tell me what to do?""You…"Wendy stomped her feet in frustration. But she stubbornly refused to admit that she liked me."I don't care. No means no!" She turned her head and glared at Ruby. "Hey, old lady! You're old enough to require adult diapers, and you're still hitting on some young guy? Don't you have any shame? I'll call the cops and report you for sexual harassment!"Ruby's expression darkened, and her voice turned cold. "Brat, what the hell are you talking about? I'm talking to my fiance. Why are you butting in?""Fiance?" Wendy rolled her eyes and planted her hands on her hips. "Then why are you asking for his number? Are you senile or delusional? Either way, get yourself to a mental hospital or a nursing home!"I laughed out loud. She was so cute with her sharp, witty comebacks.I patted Wendy on the

[Host, Wendy's affection for you has reached 80%. Keep up the good work.]I smiled, twirling the pencil in my hand. Then I added the final stroke to the woman's eyebrow on the sketch."I'll be done with this mission soon."Just then, an urgent female voice came from behind me. "Archie!"I turned around, and the next second, someone pulled me into her embrace."It really is you, Archie! I've been looking for you for so long. Where have you been all this time?" The woman held me tightly, as if she was afraid I would disappear the next second.I pulled myself free and frowned as I looked her up and down. I was sure I didn't know this woman, but the joy in her eyes told me we were more than just acquaintances.I asked, "Who are you?"The woman's expression stiffened as she stared at me with disbelief. "Archie, what's wrong with you? You don't remember me anymore? I'm your fiancee, Ruby Monroe!"The system popped up. [Host, she's your previous target.]"Oh, so she's the crazy old

Ruby had never walked into the storage room before. Everything in front of her hit her like a crushing blow to the chest. The room was packed with things. For the first time, Ruby truly realized how many things she and I had accumulated together. There were countless photos of the two of us, along with matching ceramic mugs we had made together and matching dolls. There were also all the gifts I'd given her, including sweaters and scarves I'd knitted myself.I had always been frugal. Most of our dates were inexpensive, and sometimes they didn't cost anything at all. All my gifts were cheap and useless too.The most expensive thing was the scarf, which cost eight thousand dollars. She had deliberately hinted that she wanted it, just to get me to spend a fortune on her.Back then, to save up enough money, I sold pancakes while taking some questionable, highly suggestive art commissions on the side. I was even almost sexually harassed by a client once. And she never once wore the sc

Ruby frowned. "How could a grown man just disappear? Besides, his dad is still…"She paused as she suddenly remembered that Dad had seemed like he was going to jump off the building last night."Mr. Klein's dad jumped off the roof last night. The doctors worked on him all night. They managed to save him, but he's now in a vegetative state…"Ruby's breath hitched in her throat. She knocked over the glass of water beside her. She never thought Dad would actually jump. She had always assumed it was a ploy seriously ill people used to get attention, believing that once they actually got up on the rooftop, they would be too afraid to die.She really hadn't expected Dad to actually want to die.Her voice became hoarse. "What about Archie?"Ruby wondered if I was okay or if I was crying somewhere."When the doctor made his rounds this morning, Mr. Klein and his dad were both gone. We searched everywhere around the hospital and checked his home and the places he often went, but we could

I received a call from Ruby. She said, "Ricky is my old friend's son. I can't just ignore him. I can find your dad another kidney."I kept quiet.Ruby sighed and changed the topic. "You got the suit already, right? Wear it tomorrow and meet me at the same place. I have something important to tell you."I suddenly realized that tomorrow would be the day she proposed to me for the ninth time. Even now, she still wanted to toy with me.But this time, I wasn't going to play along.I had no use for your money anymore, Ruby. And I had no use for you either.…I didn't show up the next day, and I also threw the custom-made suit into the trash. While I was arranging for Dad to be discharged from the hospital, Miriam suddenly showed up and dragged me away against my will."Ruby has been waiting for you. Why didn't you show up? Even though she has proposed so many times before, maybe this time she won't lose her memory again. You can't give up on her!"Fireflies danced across the night
