Chapter 2

Author: Beloved Farewell
There was a brief silence on the other end of the call before Seth Dawson's voice came through. "Greg, you've gone too far. Even if you're lying, you shouldn't joke about something like that happening to your mom."

Hearing that, Bethany lost her temper and screamed, "Gregory Harrington! You're unbelievable! Go ahead and play whatever dirty games you want. But I'd rather teach a complete idiot than teach you anything!"

I couldn't be bothered arguing anymore. Just as I was about to hang up, Bethany spoke again.

"If your mom's condition isn't that serious, then get back to work. I want you at the hospital tonight!"

"Why?" I asked.

"The patient from today's surgery suddenly developed severe post-op complications. We need you back here immediately."

I'd reviewed the patient's chart before. His overall condition and his vital signs had been stable.

Although the surgical technique Bethany had pioneered could save lives, it also carried a high risk of severe postoperative complications. But given the patient's condition, the chances of that happening had been extremely low.

Before I could say anything, she barked, "If you're not back before midnight tonight, don't bother coming home!"

With that, she hung up.

I stared at the darkened screen as emotions finally crashed over me. I crouched against the wall outside, smoking cigarette after cigarette until I regained my composure.

Then, I called a coworker and asked him to help me file my resignation paperwork with the chief. I told him to keep it quiet until everything was finalized.

By then, I didn't have the strength or patience left to deal with Bethany's constant drama.

I didn't go home that night. I turned off my phone too, and it wasn't until the week after Mom's memorial service that I finally returned with my luggage.

The moment I walked in, I saw Bethany curled up against Seth on the couch, tears streaming down her face.

Even after noticing me, Seth made no move to let her go.

"Look who finally came home," he said, his smile smug.

I clenched my fists and hissed through gritted teeth, "Get the hell out of my house! Don't pull this disgusting crap in my home."

The second he saw how furious I was, Seth quickly pulled his arm away from Bethany. Then, he switched to an innocent look.

"Dr. Olsen's been having a hard time these past few days. I just came by to check on her. But if you really don't want me here, I can leave."

As he got to his feet, Bethany stood too. In the next instant, she marched over and slapped me hard.

"You still have the nerve to criticize him? Do you even realize how badly you screwed everything up? If it weren't for you, that patient would still be alive!"

Seth jumped in at once. "Exactly. Your mom wasn't even critically ill, and disappearing from the hospital for days was irresponsible. Just because your mom mattered to you doesn't mean you can put another patient at risk."

I almost laughed from sheer disbelief. Apparently, they could pin any blame they wanted on me.

"Bethany, first of all, your patient's death had nothing to do with me. I took official leave and followed every protocol. You don't get to dump the blame on me.

"Second, this is my house. You and Seth can get the hell out! We're done!"

Bethany stared at me in disbelief. "Seriously, Gregory? My patient died. I've been devastated over it, and you disappeared for days. Instead of comforting me, you're breaking up with me?"

Without missing a beat, Seth piled on me further.

"Greg, I have to be honest. You've been an awful boyfriend. You weren't here when Dr. Olsen needed you the most. Now, all you ever care about is lying and trying to steal her techniques. If I were her, I would've broken up with you ages ago."

Bethany tried to hit me again, but this time, I grabbed her wrist and shoved her back onto the couch.

"Gregory, your mother's gone, but my life is over too. Isn't that punishment enough for what I did?" Bethany had asked. I replied coldly, "At least you're still alive. My mom's never coming back. Just leave."Then, I slammed the door in her face. …After that, things were quiet for a few days. But it turned out that Bethany had another trick up her sleeve. Late one night, she called me. "Gregory, I just got off work. I swear someone's following me. It has to be Seth. He must've been released, and he's coming after me. You have to come save me."For the first time, I gave in. I'd heard Seth's family had spent a fortune getting him released on bail. They'd practically bankrupted themselves paying a settlement to the dead patient's family just to keep him out of prison. But when I got there, Bethany was all dressed up. Smiling, she tugged me into the same restaurant where we'd had our first date. She'd even ordered the same dishes from the night we got together. That was whe

I had seen this coming. After all, Bethany had always cared about keeping up a flawless, glamorous image. She refused to carry anything but designer bags, and if her makeup wasn't from some high-end international brand, she wouldn't even use it.Beyond all the things I bought her, Bethany spent money on herself without the slightest restraint. Even a night out with her girlfriends had to be at upscale fine-dining places. A look of embarrassment crossed her face as she said, "Don't worry. I can ask my parents for money. We should still be able to come up with the down payment."Hearing her say that made the unease in my chest fade. Of course, I never would've let her ask her parents for money to buy Mom a house. But the fact that she was willing to try was enough for me to forgive her.In the end, words were all Bethany had. After that day, she never brought the matter up again. …After taking a few days to clear my head, I contacted a former senior who was working abroad. S

"Damn! I almost believed Dr. Olsen for a second. Turns out, she really did hook up with a younger guy," someone said. "Exactly! Honestly, I wouldn't even have brought it up if things hadn't gotten this bad. Last night, I was in the resident housing complex next door when I heard noises coming from Seth's room. I figured he was just watching porn, but turns out, he was with Dr. Olsen."Bethany went completely pale. Still, she scrambled to defend herself. "It's not what you think! Seth forced himself on me last night!"Gregory, don't listen to them. If you hadn't thrown me out, I never would've—""Enough!" I bellowed, cutting her off. "We're over. You don't owe me an explanation."Just then, a nurse rushed over, clearly panicked. "Dr. Olsen, one of your patients just coded! He's in danger!"Bethany spun around so fast that she tripped and fell to the floor. Then, she looked up at me pleadingly. "Gregory, please help save that patient."I didn't want to go, but then Dr. Sinclair s

Everything finally clicked into place for Bethany. Trembling with rage, she raised her hand and struck Seth hard across the face. Then, she turned to Dr. Sinclair. "I want the recording from that surgery pulled immediately. "Yes, I supervised the operation, but there were several points where Seth blocked my view. I couldn't clearly see what he was doing, and he kept assuring me everything was under control."I'll take responsibility for my part in this, but I won't let the real culprit walk away either."Almost immediately, tears ran down Seth's face. "You can't pull the footage! Dr. Olsen, please!" he pleaded with her. "Can't we handle this privately? Please don't show it!"But the decision was no longer his to make. The patient's family immediately shouted, "We want to see the footage too! Besides, the police are already here."Before long, footage from the surgery began playing on the screen in the conference room. As expected, every step Seth had shielded from Bethany'

The fight dragged on for more than ten minutes before the police finally arrived and broke it up.Bethany sat slumped in a chair, disheveled. "I'm innocent! I never took any money from patients!" She covered her face and wailed. "Even if I wasn't the one who personally performed the surgery, there was nothing wrong with it. You can't blame it all on me!"The middle-aged woman, still furious, tried to strike her again. But this time, the police held her back. "How can you lie through your teeth?" the woman shouted. "Dr. Dawson was the one who came to us asking for money! "He said you normally charged other patients 20 thousand dollars under the table, and that asking us for ten thousand dollars was already doing us a favor! How did someone like you ever become a doctor? You're disgusting!"The second those words left her mouth, Seth's face turned deathly pale. He instinctively stepped back, ready to run. But Bethany grabbed him. "Seth, when did you take money from them?"He

Tears welled up in Bethany's eyes as soon as she heard that. Flustered, she grabbed my hand and apologized. "I'm sorry. I really didn't know. You never explained things to me clearly. Otherwise, how could I have just stood there and watched Connie die?"I let out a snort. "I already got down on my knees. How much clearer could I have been? We were together for five years. Yet, you chose to trust a resident you'd known for six months over what I had to say. So, what else could I have done?"Several doctors stepped in as well. "He's right. I saw Dr. Harrington getting down on his knees that day. I thought the two of you were just arguing. I can't believe you got things this wrong, Dr. Olsen."Seth panicked and rushed to defend himself. "I didn't do anything! All I did was mention that the promotion review was coming up soon. I had no idea what was going on between them."What I hadn't expected was that even now, Bethany was still taking his side. "Seth, this isn't your fault. I
