Chapter 4

Author: Beloved Farewell
Bethany's voice broke as she spoke. "Since when did you become this petty? Seth's my resident. Of course I was going to spend more time teaching him. You're just bitter because you couldn't learn anything from me, so now you're trying to drag us through the mud!"

I was just about to fire back when several people burst through the door.

A middle-aged couple charged at me, grabbed my collar, and swung at me without warning.

"You're the irresponsible doctor, aren't you? My mother's surgery was successful, yet she died from post-op complications! You could've saved her, but you didn't! I'm not letting you get away with it!"

Several security guards rushed in to break things up. That was when I spotted Seth standing behind the crowd, a smug grin plastered across his face.

I laughed bitterly to myself. I'd planned to let things end peacefully between Bethany and me and stay out of each other's lives. But if this was how they wanted to play it, they couldn't blame me for what came next.

Once security restrained the family, I straightened my rumpled collar and said, "I understand what it's like to lose someone you love, but this has nothing to do with me."

"What do you mean that this has nothing to do with you? Dr. Dawson told us everything! You got bitter because Dr. Olsen won't teach you, so you picked a fight with her and refused to come back. If you had, my mom wouldn't be dead!"

I replied evenly, "I was on approved leave. This has nothing to do with me trying to learn from her. Dr. Olsen refused to operate on my mom, and she died in the ICU.

"I know what you're feeling because I just lost my mom, too. I spent the last week arranging her funeral. If you really want to know who's responsible, check the surveillance footage from the operating room. The truth will speak for itself."

The moment my words settled, the color drained from Bethany's and Seth's faces.

While I was in my hometown, a coworker called to tell me about what had happened.

As it turned out, Bethany hadn't performed the surgery herself. She had let Seth take the lead so he could gain experience.

After Seth spent the entire night trying to pin the blame on me, I'd already begun to suspect that something had gone wrong during the surgery.

Bethany hurried to defend him. "Yes, Seth handled the surgery, but I was there the entire time guiding him. He's a quick learner. There's no way he could've made a mistake."

"Did you all hear that? Even now, he's still lying about his mother to save himself." Seth jumped in to stir the pot.

He went on, "Gregory, you don't deserve to be a doctor! You abandoned a patient and let her die. You're the one responsible for this!"

Bethany's expression darkened as she looked at me. "One lie was bad enough. Stop making this worse. I'll help you deal with this, but you need to apologize to the family right now."

At that moment, the chief, Raymond Sinclair, strode toward me.

He pulled a white envelope from his pocket and pressed it into my hand. "Dr. Harrington, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I was out of town on business at the time. If I'd been here, I never would've let this happen."

The moment he said that, Bethany went completely still. A beat later, she asked, "D-Dr. Sinclair, what are you talking about? Didn't his mother get transferred because her condition wasn't serious?"

One of the doctors who had helped with the resuscitation stepped forward.

"Transferred? I was there with Dr. Harrington the entire time, trying to save her. I watched his mother die with my own eyes."

He added, "Dr. Olsen, you refused to operate on a critically ill patient. If anyone here shouldn't be calling themselves a doctor, it's you."

"Gregory, your mother's gone, but my life is over too. Isn't that punishment enough for what I did?" Bethany had asked. I replied coldly, "At least you're still alive. My mom's never coming back. Just leave."Then, I slammed the door in her face. …After that, things were quiet for a few days. But it turned out that Bethany had another trick up her sleeve. Late one night, she called me. "Gregory, I just got off work. I swear someone's following me. It has to be Seth. He must've been released, and he's coming after me. You have to come save me."For the first time, I gave in. I'd heard Seth's family had spent a fortune getting him released on bail. They'd practically bankrupted themselves paying a settlement to the dead patient's family just to keep him out of prison. But when I got there, Bethany was all dressed up. Smiling, she tugged me into the same restaurant where we'd had our first date. She'd even ordered the same dishes from the night we got together. That was whe

I had seen this coming. After all, Bethany had always cared about keeping up a flawless, glamorous image. She refused to carry anything but designer bags, and if her makeup wasn't from some high-end international brand, she wouldn't even use it.Beyond all the things I bought her, Bethany spent money on herself without the slightest restraint. Even a night out with her girlfriends had to be at upscale fine-dining places. A look of embarrassment crossed her face as she said, "Don't worry. I can ask my parents for money. We should still be able to come up with the down payment."Hearing her say that made the unease in my chest fade. Of course, I never would've let her ask her parents for money to buy Mom a house. But the fact that she was willing to try was enough for me to forgive her.In the end, words were all Bethany had. After that day, she never brought the matter up again. …After taking a few days to clear my head, I contacted a former senior who was working abroad. S

"Damn! I almost believed Dr. Olsen for a second. Turns out, she really did hook up with a younger guy," someone said. "Exactly! Honestly, I wouldn't even have brought it up if things hadn't gotten this bad. Last night, I was in the resident housing complex next door when I heard noises coming from Seth's room. I figured he was just watching porn, but turns out, he was with Dr. Olsen."Bethany went completely pale. Still, she scrambled to defend herself. "It's not what you think! Seth forced himself on me last night!"Gregory, don't listen to them. If you hadn't thrown me out, I never would've—""Enough!" I bellowed, cutting her off. "We're over. You don't owe me an explanation."Just then, a nurse rushed over, clearly panicked. "Dr. Olsen, one of your patients just coded! He's in danger!"Bethany spun around so fast that she tripped and fell to the floor. Then, she looked up at me pleadingly. "Gregory, please help save that patient."I didn't want to go, but then Dr. Sinclair s

Everything finally clicked into place for Bethany. Trembling with rage, she raised her hand and struck Seth hard across the face. Then, she turned to Dr. Sinclair. "I want the recording from that surgery pulled immediately. "Yes, I supervised the operation, but there were several points where Seth blocked my view. I couldn't clearly see what he was doing, and he kept assuring me everything was under control."I'll take responsibility for my part in this, but I won't let the real culprit walk away either."Almost immediately, tears ran down Seth's face. "You can't pull the footage! Dr. Olsen, please!" he pleaded with her. "Can't we handle this privately? Please don't show it!"But the decision was no longer his to make. The patient's family immediately shouted, "We want to see the footage too! Besides, the police are already here."Before long, footage from the surgery began playing on the screen in the conference room. As expected, every step Seth had shielded from Bethany'

The fight dragged on for more than ten minutes before the police finally arrived and broke it up.Bethany sat slumped in a chair, disheveled. "I'm innocent! I never took any money from patients!" She covered her face and wailed. "Even if I wasn't the one who personally performed the surgery, there was nothing wrong with it. You can't blame it all on me!"The middle-aged woman, still furious, tried to strike her again. But this time, the police held her back. "How can you lie through your teeth?" the woman shouted. "Dr. Dawson was the one who came to us asking for money! "He said you normally charged other patients 20 thousand dollars under the table, and that asking us for ten thousand dollars was already doing us a favor! How did someone like you ever become a doctor? You're disgusting!"The second those words left her mouth, Seth's face turned deathly pale. He instinctively stepped back, ready to run. But Bethany grabbed him. "Seth, when did you take money from them?"He

Tears welled up in Bethany's eyes as soon as she heard that. Flustered, she grabbed my hand and apologized. "I'm sorry. I really didn't know. You never explained things to me clearly. Otherwise, how could I have just stood there and watched Connie die?"I let out a snort. "I already got down on my knees. How much clearer could I have been? We were together for five years. Yet, you chose to trust a resident you'd known for six months over what I had to say. So, what else could I have done?"Several doctors stepped in as well. "He's right. I saw Dr. Harrington getting down on his knees that day. I thought the two of you were just arguing. I can't believe you got things this wrong, Dr. Olsen."Seth panicked and rushed to defend himself. "I didn't do anything! All I did was mention that the promotion review was coming up soon. I had no idea what was going on between them."What I hadn't expected was that even now, Bethany was still taking his side. "Seth, this isn't your fault. I
