LOGINMira stared at the big security screen on the wall by the front door, and her soul practically left her body.
The outdoor camera was showing the front gate. And right there, staring straight into the camera lens with a wicked, ugly smile, was the head nurse from General Hospital.
And she wasn't alone. Two huge, scary-looking men were standing behind her, holding Mira’s mother right there in her hospital wheelchair, looking terrified and confused.
Mira’s breath caught in her throat.
"Mama!" she screamed, taking a desperate step forward like she could somehow punch her way through the television screen.
On the screen, the nurse held up a phone right to the camera lens and waved, like she was greeting someone on a friendly video call.
Right at that second, Daniel’s phone buzzed hard in his hand. He looked down at the new text message, and his jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumped.
The text read:
*“We have the mother. If you want her to see tomorrow, send the maid out the front gates alone. In two minutes. Or we pull the plug on her life support right now.”*
Mira grabbed her head, tears spilling down her swollen cheeks like broken pipes. "They have her! They are going to kill her! Please, Mr. Hudson, let me go! I have to go right now!"
She tried to bolt past Daniel toward the front door, but Daniel caught her arm and pulled her back, pressing her firmly behind his broad shoulders.
"Let you go?" Daniel’s voice was shaking, but not from fear—from pure, terrifying rage. "If you walk out those gates unarmed, they won't just take you. They’ll kill you both and dump you in a ditch before you even reach the van."
"I don't care! It's my mother!" Mira cried, fighting against his grip, her yellow-and-bee socks slipping on the smooth marble floor. "If she dies, what is the point of me staying here?! Let me go!"
Arthur Harrison and Sienna saw their chance in the chaos. While everyone was distracted by the screen, they started tip-toeing toward the open front door, trying to sneak out like naughty children.
Daniel didn't even turn his head to look at them. He just raised his left hand, pointed two fingers at Axel and Jace, and barked a single word:
"Lockdown."
*CLANG!*
Instantly, Axel and Jace slammed the heavy steel security shutters down over the front windows and doors, locking the entire foyer tight and trapping Arthur and Sienna inside with them.
"Hey! You can't lock us in here!" Arthur shouted, his face turning red with panic. "My lawyers will—"
Daniel ignored him completely like he was just background noise. He turned his full attention back to Mira, holding her gently by both shoulders so she had to stop crying and look right into his eyes.
"Listen to me," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked zero argument. "Your mother is not dying today. And neither are you."
He turned to Axel and threw him a set of heavy, clinking keys.
"Get the back armored SUV ready," Daniel ordered, stepping into full mob-boss mode. "We are not waiting for them to make the next move. We are going through the front gate. And someone is about to find out why they shouldn't mess with my staff."
He reached into his jacket, pulled out a second heavy black gun, checked the clip with a sharp, satisfying *click*, and tucked it securely into the waistband of his trousers.
Mira stared at him, her tears pausing for a second out of sheer disbelief. "Wait... are you actually coming with me?"
Daniel looked down at her, the ghost of a dangerous, cold smirk finally touching the corner of his lips.
"Of course I am," Daniel said softly. "Nobody interrupts my morning coffee, shoots up my foyer, and kidnaps my maid and gets away with it."
Before Mira could say thank you, or call him crazy, or argue about her salary, Daniel grabbed her hand. He pulled her firmly behind him, kicked open the heavy side door leading to the underground garage, and stepped out into the shadows.
The armored SUV was waiting, engine roaring. Axel was in the driver's seat, and Jace was checking his rifle in the back.
Daniel pushed Mira into the back seat, slammed the door shut, and climbed in beside her.
"Drive through the gate," Daniel told Axel.
The heavy SUV revved its engine, tires screeching against the concrete as it sped toward the main gates where the black van was waiting.
Mira held her breath, gripping the seat in front of her. Through the bulletproof glass, she saw the black van. She saw the nurse holding her mother.
And then, right as the SUV slammed hard into the iron gates to break them open, the side door of the van slid open, and the nurse didn't pull out a phone—she pulled out a remote detonator, pressed a red button, and smiled.
The countdown echoing through the smart speakers was counting down like a bomb in an action movie.*“Five... four... three...”*"Toby, do something with your glowing rectangle!" Mira hissed in the dark, clutching Daniel's shirt as the red emergency lights flickered out completely."I'm trying! But Julian has root access to the mainframe!" Toby cried out from somewhere near the kitchen island, the sound of his frantic typing clacking away like a hyperactive woodpecker. "He's rerouting the smart locks! We're locked in!"*“One... Zero.”*Instead of an explosion, a loud, dramatic *CHIME* played through the surround-sound system, followed by the smooth, pre-recorded voice of a cheerful digital assistant.*"System reboot complete. Welcome, Master Julian. Self-destruct sequence initiated in... just kidding! Have a nice day!"*Silence hit the penthouse. The red lights popped back on, casting a dim, moody glow over the living room.Mrs. Alade lowered the heavy silver candlestick she had been b
The glowing screen of Daniel’s phone felt like it was radiating ice.Mira stared at the photograph of the heavy steel basement door. A door she had never, ever seen during her time cleaning every square inch of the Hudson Mansion."Okay, timeout," Mira said, her voice tight and shaky. She looked up from the phone into Daniel's wide, panicked grey eyes. "Are you telling me that beneath your multi-million-dollar, ultra-modern smart home, you have a secret dungeon like something out of a medieval castle?""It wasn't a dungeon," Daniel muttered, running a hand through his dark hair, looking like a man who had just realized his entire life was built on quicksand. "It was an old bomb shelter from my grandfather's time. It was supposed to be permanently sealed twenty years ago.""Well, apparently, whoever is down there brought a crowbar and a very good internet connection!" Mira hissed, pointing at the text message.Across the room, the happy chatter between Mrs. Alade and Daniel’s mother in
The word hung in the dark, heavy living room like a physical weight.*"Mother...?"*Mira blinked once. Twice. She looked from Daniel’s pale, frozen face over to the woman standing in the shadows of the private elevator foyer."Wait," Mira whispered, poking Daniel hard in the ribs. "Did you just say *mother*? As in, the woman who gave birth to you? As in, the woman who is supposed to be resting peacefully in a very expensive family mausoleum?! Because if ghosts are paying utility bills in Manhattan now, the economy is worse than I thought!"The woman stepped forward out of the shadows, letting the soft neon glow of the New York skyline hit her face. She looked remarkably like Daniel. Same sharp jawline, same piercing grey eyes, and the same terrifying aura of a person who could bankrupt a small country with a single phone call. But she also had a warm, elegant smile that didn't look anything like a ghost."I am not a ghost, darling," the woman said smoothly, her voice rich and melodic.
The next morning, the Hudson Mansion looked less like a crime scene and more like a very expensive hotel that had survived a minor apocalypse. The broken front gate was temporarily patched up with heavy steel sheets, the windows in the living room were replaced with thick double-pane glass, and Uncle Richard, Arthur Harrison, and Sienna had officially been shipped off to federal holding cells where they could complain about interior design to a judge.Peace had finally returned.Except, of course, for the fact that Mira Alade was now the legal majority shareholder and co-owner of the entire Hudson corporate empire. It was 10:00 AM. Mira was sitting in the massive, mahogany-paneled boardroom on the top floor of the Hudson Tower in downtown Manhattan. She was wearing a brand-new, ultra-professional navy blue blazer over her oversized shirt, looking like a serious businesswoman. But true to form, if you looked under the boardroom table, she was wearing a fresh pair of socks: one bright o
The rain poured down in sheets, but the world around Mira had completely frozen. Her eyes were locked on the paper lying in the mud. The faded ink, the official seal, and the name staring back at her like a bad joke.*Adopted Child: Alade.*And right above it, listed as the legal guardians who signed the surrender papers twenty years ago, were two names she never expected to see together: *Arthur Harrison* and *Victoria Alade*.Mira looked up, water streaming down her face, mixing with the hot tears pricking the corners of her eyes."What... what is this?" Mira whispered, her voice shaking so badly she could barely get the words out. She looked from the paper to Daniel, who was standing there like a statue carved out of ice and pure dread. "Daniel. Tell me this is a joke. Tell me this is fake paperwork from your crazy uncle."Daniel didn't answer. He didn't deny it. He just stared at her, his grey eyes heavy with a dark, suffocating secret that he had apparently carried for a decade.
The glowing screen of Mira’s phone flashed a harsh white light against her face.*Run, don't look back.*Simple words. Clear instructions. But right now, Mira’s legs felt like they had been filled with wet cement.*Click.*The brass door handle finished turning. The heavy mahogany door creaked open, just an inch, letting a draft of freezing, metallic air flood the dark library."Maya," Mira whispered, her voice shaking so badly she could barely form the syllables. "Who is outside?"Maya didn't answer. She was backed up against the mahogany desk, her eyes wide, staring at the opening door like a deer caught in high beams.*Screeeech.*The door opened wider. Whatever was dragging behind whoever was out in that hallway made a horrible, scraping sound against the polished wood floor. *Metal on marble. Iron on wood.*Mira’s brain finally kicked out of freeze mode. Survival instinct took over."We are not waiting to find out if they brought snacks," Mira hissed. She grabbed Maya’s cold hand
