Brian’s POV

"Mollie, stop right there!" I barked, my voice echoing off the stone walls as I reached the doorway of the dressing room, catching her with one boot already planted on the top dark step of the hidden passage.

She froze, her hand resting against the rough stone archway as she turned her head to look back at me, her eyes widening in surprise before settling into a sharp, stubborn glare. "Brian? I thought you were checking the eastern gallery."

"I heard the wooden floorboards scrape fro

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    A Name From the Old Days

Brian’s POV“Read it, Brian,” Mollie whispered. “Please.”I took the strip from Chloe’s fingers and tilted it toward the gray light. Nadia’s handwriting slanted across the parchment as though she had written it on horseback, and the ink had barely dried. I read the first line silently, then the second, and my jaw tightened so hard that my teeth ached.“What does it say?” Chloe asked.“Dr. Silas,” I said aloud, and the name felt strange in my mouth, like a coin from a foreign land. “That is the man who lives in the forest.”Mollie leaned closer until her shoulder pressed against mine. “Keep going.”“Exiled wolf-alchemist. Lives beyond the old logging camp where the timber road ends. Buys what Malakai’s quartermasters bring him and pays in silver and herbs. Do not go in without a word from me. Three of my people entered his woods last spring and none of them came out.” I lowered the parchment slowly. “That is all of it.”“Silas,” Mollie repeated, trying it out. “I have never heard that

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    The Weight of Waiting

Mollie’s POV“Then we follow them now,” I said, and I was already turning toward the horses.Brian caught my elbow before I had taken two steps. “Mollie, stop.”“Those ruts are less than a day old, Rowan said so himself. Every minute we stand in this mud, those wagons roll further into the trees.” I pulled against his grip, and he did not let go. “There are thirty-one people on that road, and some of them are children.”“I know exactly how many there are.”“Then you know we cannot wait.”“I know we cannot rush.” His voice stayed low and even, which was somehow worse than shouting. “Look at me. Do you remember the last time we ran into the dark after someone we loved?”I did not answer. The memory answered for me, the ridge in the rain, Toren lying twisted in the mud, Julian on his knees with three black arrows in his back.“Arthur knew we were coming,” Brian went on. “He had thirty soldiers waiting, and archers in the trees, and our horses stolen. We were lucky to walk out of there. J

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    The Road Into No Man’s Land

Brian’s POVI heard every word she said. The old woman might have whispered it into Mollie’s ear, but my wolf caught the rasp of it across the yard, and the back of my neck prickled before she had even finished.“Say that again,” I said, crossing the muddy ground in four strides. The old woman flinched when my shadow fell over her, and her fingers tightened on Mollie’s sleeve. Mollie laid a hand over hers. “It is all right,” she told her. “This is Brian. He will not hurt you.”“The Alpha,” the woman murmured, studying my face with sharp, wet eyes. “You have your father’s jaw.”“What is your name, grandmother?”“Edda. I have lived in this village for seventy-one years.” She jerked her chin toward the burned mill. “I was sleeping in the hayloft above the cooper’s shed, since my bones do not like the stairs. When the shouting started I put my face down in the straw and I did not move, but I could see the road through the gap in the boards.”“What did you see?” Mollie asked gently.“Men w

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    What the Fire Left

Mollie’s POV“Then I am going to read it myself,” I said.Brian turned on me so fast that his chair legs screeched across the flagstones. “You are not going anywhere near that village.”“The door is addressed to me. Malakai wrote my name in a burning house, and I will not let a frightened rider and a captain’s sketch tell me what it says.”“Vane will copy every letter and bring it back before supper.”“Vane will copy what he sees. I need to see how it was cut, how deep, what was written below the part the fire ate.” I lowered my voice so the council would not hear it shake. “Thirty-one people are gone, Brian. If I sit in this hall while someone else looks at the evidence for me, I will spend the rest of the siege wondering what I missed.”Behind us, Bram muttered something about the human Luna running toward the very thing that hunted her. Old Osric silenced him with a single tap of his staff. “Let her go,” he said mildly. “If the girl wants to see what her enemies do, she has earned

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    Smoke on the Border

Brian’s POV“Get him water,” I said, already on my feet, and two guards hauled the runner upright while a third pressed a cup into his shaking hands. He drank half of it down his chin. The scrap of cloth in his fist was torn from a sleeve and stiff with dried blood, and when he held it toward me I saw that the cuff had once been dyed the green of the Wren’s Crossing weavers.“Slowly,” I told him. “Start with your name and where you rode from.”“Tobin, my lord. Third rider on the northern post.” He wiped his mouth with the back of his wrist. “I rode from Wren’s Crossing. I have not slept since yesterday noon.”“What happened there?”“They came at dusk.” His voice cracked, and he swallowed hard. “No horns, no warning shots. The watchman on the mill roof did not even have time to ring the bell. By the time I reached the lower road, half the houses were burning.”A chair scraped behind me. I heard Mollie draw a sharp breath, though she stayed where she stood in the center of the hall, her

  • Loving The Enemy Alpha    Before the Council

Mollie’s POV“Sit,” Bram said, and the elders obeyed him in a grumbling shuffle of night robes and bare ankles. “The vote was set for the next full session. This is the next full session. Nothing in our law says it must wait for the sun.”“Our law also says the Alpha must be informed before a session is called,” Brian said from the doorway, his voice flat. “I am informed. Barely.”“Then you are in time to hear it.” Bram did not smile, which somehow made him more unsettling. He turned to the long table and lifted a hand toward the open space on the floor before it. “The human Luna may stand there and answer the council, since her fate is the matter in question.”Brian’s fingers brushed mine, a quick, warm squeeze, and then he let go and went to his seat at the table’s end. I walked into the open space alone, and the torches threw my shadow long across the flagstones. Sixteen faces looked at me, and nearly every one of them had decided something about me before I opened my mouth.“I wil
