Seven Years Later

Quiana's POV

Laila had been staring at the arrivals screen for so long that the letters had begun to blur together.

She checked her phone again, then glanced at the screen as though doing so might somehow make the plane arrive faster.

“Twenty minutes,” she muttered. “Twenty whole minutes.”

The woman standing beside her gave her a curious look.

Laila smiled politely before turning back toward the arrival doors.

She wasn't waiting for just anyone.

She was waiting for her peopl

Laila was halfway through telling Mavris why he had absolutely no business giving people relationship advice when the café door opened and two familiar men walked in.She didn't notice them immediately but Mavris did.His hand stopped halfway to his mouth, a forkful of cake suspended in the air as his eyes narrowed at the entrance."Oh, you've got to be kidding me."Laila paused. "What?""Don't look now."Naturally, she looked.Chase had just stepped inside, checking his phone while Dwen walked beside him with the expression of a man who had already found three things to dislike about the day. They were talking about something, although Dwen appeared considerably less interested in the conversation than Chase.Laila recognized them from the previous encounter. Chase had been the one who apologized after his friend collided with Mavris, while Dwen was the reason an otherwise ordinary afternoon had turned into an argument neither man seemed willing to forget.Beside her, Mavris slowly l

  • Loving The Wrong One    Chapter 25 - Parts I Can't Remember

Zack’s POVI thought the past was settled.Quiana and I were divorced. Cameron and I were still together, although the future I had imagined with her seemed to move further away every time I tried to reach it. My company was thriving, my position was secure, and nothing in my life had changed enough to make me question the decisions that had brought me here. Then Quiana Sutton walked into my boardroom, addressed me as Mr. Hunter, and made seven years feel like a poor excuse for the man I had become.I resented that reaction. She had no right to unsettle me simply because she had learned to live without me. I had never promised her love. I had never pretended to be the husband she wanted, and I had never hidden where my heart belonged. If she had moved on, that was what she had every right to do.So why had I found myself thinking about her again that morning?I stood before the windows in my office, one hand in my pocket, staring at the city without really seeing it. My assistant had

  • Loving The Wrong One    Chapter 24 - Things that Stayed

Zack’s POVQuiana Sutton had changed, but not in the way I expected.During our meeting, she had listened to my questions, presented her ideas, and addressed me with a professionalism that made it difficult to believe we had ever been married. She hadn't raised her voice or made a pointed remark about our past. She hadn't even seemed particularly interested in what I thought of her.She had simply done her job. That should have pleased me. Our marriage had ended years ago, and neither of us had any reason to drag its remains into a business meeting. Yet her composure irritated me in a way I couldn't quite explain. I had expected some sign that seeing me again meant something to her, even if that something was resentment.Instead, she had given me nothing.I left the meeting wondering when Quiana had become so comfortable treating me like a stranger. The question followed me into the evening, and with it came memories of the years since our divorce. Not memories of a marriage I wished

  • Loving The Wrong One    Chapter 23 - Pretense?

Quiana's POVBy the time I returned to the office, I had decided that Zack Hunter was no longer worth the space he occupied in my head.Unfortunately, my brain hadn't received the memo.I sat at my desk, staring at the same paragraph on my screen for the third time, before finally closing the document with an irritated sigh. It wasn't that I couldn't concentrate. I spent a long time learning how to work through difficult situations, and one meeting with my ex-husband wasn't going to undo that progress. But the nerve of him!Are you really going to pretend we don't know each other?I could still hear the question in his voice. What exactly had he expected me to do? Throw myself into his arms? Cry about our failed marriage? Ask whether he had finally realized how badly he had treated me?The man spent years making me feel like a stranger in my own marriage. Now that I was no longer his wife, he seemed surprised that I wasn't interested in pretending we were friends.Unbelievable."You'r
