Chapter 3

作者: Silently
Thea's POV

After we got home, I took a shower and crawled into bed, but I couldn't sleep. I figured I would head to the study and find a book to read, and that was when I stumbled across an old diary of mine.

The cover was worn and faded, which made sense. I had written it back in seventh grade. But I still remembered everything inside. It was all about Ryland and me.

"September 1st, 2012. Sunny.

"I'm so happy. Ryland and I went to register at our new school together today. We were wearing the same uniform, walking through the gates side by side, and everything just felt right.

"He even carried my boxes, and I wiped the sweat off his face. I wanted to lean in and whisper that I liked him."

Every entry in that diary captured a moment between us, and every single one of them had felt like something beautiful. But when Ryland found the diary, his reaction was nothing I could have prepared for. That moment was seared into my memory.

It was the second year of our marriage, and things between us had seemed to thaw a little. He wasn't as cold toward me anymore. Every now and then he would actually talk to me, and when I was in the study, he no longer turned around and walked out.

Then one day, he found the diary. The moment he read what was inside, his face went dark.

"Thea, so you've been scheming this whole time. You planned all of this from the start. You genuinely disgust me."

He threw the diary at my feet and stormed out.

The pain hit me right in the chest, and tears burned at the edges of my eyes. That diary was something I had written when I was a naive kid, full of nothing but innocent feelings for him.

How could that possibly make him uncomfortable? How did that make me a schemer?

Our relationship hit rock bottom all over again.

It wasn't until much later that I found out the truth. The reason things kept getting worse between us was that Payton had been stirring the pot the entire time, ruining Ryland's image of me from the inside.

I had tried to explain things to him, but he never gave me the chance. He wouldn't even come home to sleep.

I stopped having any illusions about our marriage. Ending it felt like the only real option left.

But just as I had everything ready for the divorce, Ryland's family business ran into serious trouble. I still couldn't let go of him, and I couldn't bring myself to watch him face a crisis alone.

So I quietly hid all the divorce paperwork and borrowed a significant amount of money from my family to help pull his company through. Once the business was back on its feet, I finally let myself breathe.

I thought that surviving something like that together might soften things between us. But the opposite happened. He seemed to resent me even more than before, stopped coming home entirely, and wouldn't so much as look at me.

This wasn't the marriage I wanted, but I had no choice except to accept it. I had always believed that marrying the man I loved meant we would grow old together, happy for the rest of our lives. Instead, we became strangers held together by a piece of paper, bound to each other with nothing left between us.

The love and partnership I had dreamed of turned into nothing more than a business arrangement between two families. I stopped trying to hold our marriage together and just let it drift.

Then one day, Payton sent me a photo. In it, Ryland was wiping a smudge from the corner of her mouth. A lavish spread of food covered the table in front of them, and despite how large the table was, the two of them were sitting pressed right up against each other.

The love of his life was back, and seeing how happy they looked together, it hit me all at once that letting go might be the best thing I could do. Setting them free would set me free too.

Ryland's POVAfter hearing Payton's reasoning, I began to suspect that Thea had been the one who deliberately spread the news. After all, the only people at school who knew what had happened that night were Thea, Payton, and me.And looking at Payton, with tears streaming down her face and heartbreak written all over her, there was no way it could've been her.It wasn't until Dad put the pressure on that I became fully convinced Thea was behind it."We desperately need the Reeves family's financial support. I'm telling you to take this opportunity and propose to Thea now."One thing led to another, and each step pushed me further and further from the Thea I thought I knew. It all seemed so calculated. She had invited me to her house, gotten me drunk, spread the rumors, and then used my family's business crisis to tighten the noose. This wasn't the Thea I had grown up with, but I had no choice except to show up at her door and propose.Because I was marrying Thea, I had to break

Ryland's POVWhen I came to, relatives from both families had already arrived. They were gathered around Thea's body, sobbing, but I couldn't hear any of it. My mind was completely blank as I stared numbly at the white sheet covering her. When I finally went back to the home Thea and I had shared, I looked around, searching for any trace of her, but there was nothing.I went to the study, and the first thing I noticed was the diary sitting in the corner. I walked over and picked it up.I remembered the first time I had seen it. We had gotten into a terrible fight over it. This was the second time I was seeing it, and now she and I were separated by death itself."September 1st, 2012. Sunny."I'm so happy. Ryland and I went to register at our new school together today. Thea's POVRyland snapped out of it and shook his head, looking embarrassed. "I just want a few minutes alone with Thea. It won't take long, and I won't hold up your lunch."His eyes were glistening with tears as he looked at Perry, practically begging."Sure, take your time. I'll wait outside." Perry kissed me gently on the forehead, then turned and left. The moment the door closed behind him, Ryland spoke. "Thea, will you marry me? Neither of us is married yet. It's not too late for us. I can't be without you."After you died in the last life, I finally realized I couldn't live without you. I had really fallen in love with you. I need you in this—"I cut him off, my voice rising. "Ryland! Wake up! The person you love is Payton, not me. And in this life, the person I love isn't you. It's Perry.""I..." Ryland dropped his head and went silent."This is where you and I end. You keep saying you can't be without me, and sure, of course you can't, because you got used to having me

  • Loving You Got Me Killed Once Already   Chapter 8

Thea's POVTori complained about it constantly. "Am I becoming the world's biggest third wheel? I don't even need to eat lunch anymore because you two are feeding me enough PDA to keep me full. Somebody, please save me."As much as Tori loved being the comic relief of our little trio, when it came to work, all three of us took things seriously. After six months of nonstop effort, the company had grown into a real operation. We hit obstacles along the way, but we tackled every single one of them head-on and came out the other side.At the celebration dinner after we landed our first major deal, Perry officially confessed his feelings for me. Tori cried harder than I did, throwing her arms around me and saying she hoped I would be happy forever. And I knew that this time around, I would be, because I was with someone who actually loved me.Not long after, Tori had good news of her own. She went public with her boyfriend and said she was tired of watching us be all lovey-dovey withou

  • Loving You Got Me Killed Once Already   Chapter 7

Thea's POVI pulled my hand free, unable to keep the emotion out of my voice."Ryland, I never forced you to marry me, did I? Yes, I liked you, and I wanted us to have a good life together. But you... Forget it. If we've both been given a second chance, then let's just let each other go."The painful memories from my past life were things I had no desire to dredge up again, so I swallowed the rest of what I wanted to say.The day he proposed, he hadn't smiled once, and on our wedding day, his eyes never landed on me. After the wedding, he treated me with nothing but contempt. When he found my diary, he said I disgusted him. Every time he slammed the door and walked away, it was like another blade sinking into my chest until I could barely breathe. He was the man I had loved since I was a child, and all he gave me was three years of misery. There was no way I was marrying him again in this life. After a long silence, Ryland spoke carefully. "Thea, will you stay with me tonight?"

  • Loving You Got Me Killed Once Already   Chapter 6

Thea's POV"No, Thea, you've got it wrong. You're the one I like. I only want to get engaged to you.""Thea, here, put this on. It's a bit cold here. And do you want some dessert?"I hadn't even noticed Perry come up behind me. Before I could react, he was already draping his suit jacket over my shoulders. The gesture startled me, and I spun around to look at him. He gave me a quick, exaggerated wink, and I understood instantly. He was doing it deliberately, trying to get under Ryland's skin.Watching Perry fuss over me like that, Ryland's grip on his champagne glass tightened visibly."Thea, who is he?""Perry Holcomb. He's my colleague and business partner.""I'm the one who funded the company," Perry added. "So technically, I'm their boss." Then he turned to me. "You and Tori should go mingle, make the rounds and introduce yourselves."That was exactly why we were here tonight, to meet as many people as possible, and now that Perry had given the nudge, Tori and I needed t
