Chapter 3

Author: Sunflower
His brows knitted tightly as he immediately let go of Nina and snapped coldly, “No one is talking about what happened back then. Why are you overthinking it?”

Nina’s lips parted slightly as she stared at West in disbelief.

I stepped forward to smooth things over. “Forget it, West. Nina probably didn’t mean it. I’m fine. Today’s supposed to be a happy occasion. Let’s not ruin it over something so small.”

West’s expression remained dark. Without another word, he grabbed Nina’s arm and pulled her away. The onlookers gradually dispersed, and the party resumed as if nothing had happened. Meanwhile, I quietly followed them upstairs.

In a secluded corner on the second floor, Nina finally shook off West’s hand and complained in a soft, aggrieved voice, “West, you hurt me. And why won’t you believe me? Why are you siding with an outsider instead?”

Seeing her pitiful expression, West let out a long sigh, his tone softening. “You and I both know the truth of what happened back then. Erin hasn’t had it easy either. You should get off her tail.”

Nina stared at him wide-eyed, as if she no longer recognized the man in front of her. “What are you talking about? West, don’t tell me you actually think of Erin as your real wife now. You only married her to help me get away with it! That matter ended years ago, and I had served my sentence—at least on the surface. It’s time for you to dump her!”

West shook his head. “We owe her far too much. I’ve made up my mind to spend the rest of my life making it up to her.”

Just as he turned to leave, Nina suddenly wrapped her arms around his waist from behind.

“I don’t believe you!” she cried. “West, I’m the one you love, isn’t it? We’re not related by blood. I know you love me. Otherwise, why would you do so much for me?”

As if she had struck a nerve, West’s body stiffened, and his hands were trembling slightly. In the end, he gave in to his desire. He turned back, cupped Nina’s face, and kissed her fiercely.

I silently stopped the recording, saved the video, and turned to leave the second floor. By the time West came back downstairs with Nina, the party was nearing its end. He couldn’t find me anywhere. It wasn’t until he returned home that he discovered me hiding in the storage room, crying quietly.

Hearing the door open, I pretended not to notice and let my sobs grow even more broken.

“Erin!”

West hurried over and pulled me into his arms, frowning anxiously.

“I was wondering where you were. What happened? Why are you crying?”

I quickly turned my head away, wiping my tears in a fluster with my sleeve. Then I forced a smile and looked at him.

“I’m fine. I just twisted my ankle while tidying up earlier. I was afraid you’d laugh at me, so I hid here…”

However, he stared at me intently, his eyes full of pain and tenderness. “Erin, don’t you know? When you lie, your smile looks forced. Anyone can tell.”

“I…” I glanced away in panic.

He reached out and gently brushed away the tear that was about to fall. “Tell me. Why were you crying in here?”

I bit my lip and held it in for a moment. Then, in the next second, I wrapped my arms around his neck and finally let my sobs break free.

“At the party, Nina mentioned my sister. I just thought… if my sister were still alive, she’d probably be about the same age as Nina now, but I’ll never get to see her grow up.”

At the mention of my sister, a flash of panic crossed West’s eyes, quickly replaced by guilt.

The arm around my waist tightened as he blamed himself softly, “It’s my fault. I was too busy with the party and neglected your feelings. Tell me, honey, what can I do to make you feel better?”

I looked down and shook my head. “You don’t need to do anything. As long as I can see you more often, that’s enough. West, can I visit your office more often in the future? I’ve been having nightmares lately—dreaming that you leave me behind. If we could eat together, talk more… maybe it would get better.”

West frowned slightly, clearly hesitant. All this time, he had deliberately avoided letting me enter his office. After all, that place hid far too many secrets he didn’t want me to know.

I withdrew my hands and smiled as if it didn’t matter. “If you’re too busy, forget it. I was just asking.”

“You’re lying again,” he said with a gentle laugh, tapping my forehead lightly. “It’s such a small request. Of course, I can agree.”

My face lit up instantly. I leaned in and kissed his cheek. “You’re the best, hubby!”

The joy on his face didn’t seem fake at all, and a flicker of excitement burned in his eyes.

Laughing, West scooped me up into his arms, and I shyly buried my face against his neck. Just a little more, and the disgust in my eyes would have been impossible to hide.

Half a month later, Jake and Nina both confessed to their crimes. Only West remained silent throughout. He requested to see me once and promised that afterward, he would confess everything. After a few seconds of consideration, I agreed to meet him.It had only been half a month, yet West looked as if he had aged more than ten years. However, the moment he saw me through the glass, his exhausted eyes instantly lit up.“Erin, thank you for agreeing to see me one last time. Do you know, during these past ten days here, there hasn’t been a single second when I wasn’t drowning in regret? I’ve imagined countless ‘what ifs.’ What if I hadn’t done something so unforgivable back then? What if we’d had a normal beginning? What if I had recognized my own feelings sooner and chosen to love you properly? Would the ending have been different?”“I took away the only sister you had in this world. I truly have no right to see you again. But there’s one question that has been haunting me. Even if it

West looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body. He didn’t resist at all. He allowed the police to escort him into the patrol car without a single struggle.Jake, too, accepted reality just as quickly. When he left, the light had vanished in his eyes.Only Nina struggled violently, completely ignoring the police warnings, and screamed curses at me at the top of her lungs. “Erin, you scheming witch! You’ll die a horrible death! Don’t think you’ve won just because of this! One day, I’ll get out and kill you myself. I’ll make you understand that not everyone can be offended!“A lowly orphan like you should’ve died under my car along with your sister back then. At least your sister’s heart was useful. You’re completely worthless! Mmph–”Before she could finish, someone stuffed a filthy rag torn straight off a mop into her mouth. The person who did it was West’s secretary, Hamish. Overwhelmed by the stench, Nina burst into tears, her face soaked with tears. However, wi

West seemed frozen in place. He didn’t even react to the flashing cameras in front of him. Staring at me in disbelief, he asked hoarsely, “So… you knew all of this?”At that moment, a dark figure suddenly rushed into my line of sight. It was Nina. Her face twisted with rage as she grabbed a chair and swung it straight at me. However, before the chair could reach me, West stepped in front of me, and the heavy blow landed squarely on his back instead. He let out a muffled groan, yet still stood firmly between Nina and me. The next second, he kicked Nina to the ground. His eyes were bloodshot as he roared, “Didn’t I tell you never to touch her? We will always owe her for this. Don’t you understand what that means?”As he spoke, he showed no mercy. He lifted his foot and stomped hard on the hand Nina had used to wield the chair. His loss of control shocked even me. As it turned out, between Nina and West, West was the truly unhinged one.Nina let out a piercing scream and cried as

Over the next seven days, I deliberately kept my distance from West. However, instead of getting annoyed, he became even more attentive.Whenever work allowed, he would come by just to check on me. He even turned down Nina’s dinner invitations several times, choosing instead to come home on time to keep me company. Nina sulked in silence more than once, but West remained completely oblivious. At last, the day of the company’s IPO launch event arrived. Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, West stood on stage, delivering a confident speech about the company’s future. As a strategic partner, Jake also came on stage, bringing Nina with him. With a remote in hand, West began showcasing the company’s major achievements on the massive screen behind him. However, the moment the visuals appeared, the entire hall erupted.“What is this?”Guests and media alike stared at the screen in shock because what was playing were the records I had gathered—evidence of West and Jake’s joint involvemen

After returning home, I carefully studied the copied files. Only then did I realize that I had made the right bet. The project was indeed an investment that West had specifically prepared for Jake.Four years ago, through Jake’s connections at the hospital, West obtained a batch of the latest medical examination reports. Those records clearly showed that my sister, Iris Bell’s heart, was a perfect match for Nina, who suffered from a heart condition. With that, he instructed Jake to get close to me, to pursue me, and to make me fall in love with him so they could gain complete control over both my movements and Iris’s. Soon after, without either of us knowing, they staged a car accident.Using their extensive connections, West and Jake secretly transferred Iris away while she was still clinging to life. She clearly still had a chance to survive, but for the sake of transplanting her heart into Nina, they went ahead and performed the surgery anyway, cutting my sister open and removin

The moment Hamish said that, West shoved the office door open violently. I was hiding inside the small lounge attached to his office, my back pressed tightly against the door. I was afraid to breathe too loudly.Thankfully, the alarm hadn’t gone off, and the password input had been successful.Yet, because I’d been forced to retreat in a hurry, I had only exited the interface. If West sat down at the desk and took a single glance at the computer, he would immediately notice something was wrong. However, clearly, he had no such intention right now. Through the narrow gap in the door, I saw him drenched in sweat, rummaging frantically through the cabinets as if searching for something important. He searched for a long time but couldn’t find what he wanted. Then, without warning, he strode straight toward the lounge. Cold sweat instantly broke out on my forehead. The lounge only had a table and a bed. There was nowhere to hide.Just as West was about to push the door open, a voice sto
