Chapter 2

Author: Sunflower
For the past four years, I had not only been the respected and well-liked Mrs. Graham. I was also a key contributor within the Graham Corp. Many of the projects that brought the company substantial growth were proposed by me, and a large portion of the employee benefits were secured through my efforts.

Two years ago, when West said the company was facing a development bottleneck and urgently needed to collaborate with Smith Group, I agreed without hesitation. Jake Smith was my ex-boyfriend and the man who abandoned me when I was seeking justice for my sister, only to turn around and hire a top-tier lawyer for Nina. Yet, for the sake of West’s company, I set aside all resentment and reconciled with Jake without batting an eye.

Now, once again for West, I had personally proposed hosting a welcome party for the woman who killed my sister. With devotion like that, how could he not be moved? And how could the friends and family who knew the inside story not admire someone like me?

The welcome party was grand. The city’s elites and influential figures gathered in full force. Nina entered gracefully in a luxurious red gown, her arm linked with Jake’s. She carried herself with confidence and arrogance.

Nothing about her looked like someone who had just been released from prison. If anything, she looked more like she had just returned from an overseas vacation. Of course, that wasn’t far from the truth. She had indeed just come back from abroad, and West himself had gone to the airport to pick her up.

The moment Nina spotted West standing beside me, her eyes lit up. She immediately jogged over and threw herself into his arms.

“West, I’ve missed you so much!” she cried. “I went to prison for four years for no reason at all, and now we can finally see each other again!”

As she spoke, her resentful gaze cut toward me like a blade. At the same time, she clung to him coquettishly, showing off.

“This welcome party is amazing. Did you plan all this for me, West? I love it!”

West smiled dotingly at her and rubbed her head.

“Erin organized everything,” he said. “Come, say hello to your sister-in-law.”

Nina’s smile froze instantly. Then, she turned her eyes to me and forced a fake smile, greeting me stiffly.

Once the party officially began, Nina moved through the crowd like a social butterfly. She was eloquent and lively, drawing waves of laughter wherever she went. However, I could feel her gaze—subtle yet tightly fixed on me.

Finally, when West went to the restroom, Nina approached. At the time, I was resting quietly in a corner of the hall. Without a word, she lifted a glass of red wine and splashed it straight onto my face.

“Oh my, I’m so sorry, Erin,” she said. “I wanted to toast you and thank you for preparing such a luxurious party for me. I just didn’t hold the glass steady. Are you alright? Do you want me to wipe it off for you?”

Despite her words, she didn’t move an inch. She simply stood there, smiling mockingly, with no intention of helping at all.

I took out a handkerchief and calmly wiped the wine from my face, a faint smile forming on my lips.

“It’s fine,” I said. “Go enjoy yourself. I’ll wash up later.”

My indifference instantly ignited Nina’s fury. She slammed the wine glass hard onto the table beside her, no longer bothering to hide her malice.

“Erin, what are you trying to do here?” she sneered. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re plotting. Trying to play the pitiful wife so that West will feel sorry for you? You’re still too naive.”

Her gaze flicked past me. Then, she leaned in close to my ear and laughed softly.

“Do you think West would keep a woman who maliciously bullies his little sister to be his wife?”

After that, she suddenly raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face. Tears instantly welled up in her eyes.

West rushed over at once and caught Nina as she swayed, pulling her into his arms.

“Nina, what happened?”

Nina shrank into his embrace, her lips trembling as tears fell. “I just wanted to come over and toast Erin, but she lectured me for being shameless. She slapped me, then snatched my wine and poured it all over her own face, trying to frame me for bullying her.”

West immediately looked at me. He saw the wine dripping down my face, soaking into my dress, staining it red.

“West,” Nina continued through tears, “I don’t understand why Erin would treat me like this. Is it still because of that car accident? But I really didn’t do it on purpose. I’ve spent four years in prison for it. Why won’t she forgive me–”

West’s expression darkened instantly, but not toward me. It was directed at Nina.

Half a month later, Jake and Nina both confessed to their crimes. Only West remained silent throughout. He requested to see me once and promised that afterward, he would confess everything. After a few seconds of consideration, I agreed to meet him.It had only been half a month, yet West looked as if he had aged more than ten years. However, the moment he saw me through the glass, his exhausted eyes instantly lit up.“Erin, thank you for agreeing to see me one last time. Do you know, during these past ten days here, there hasn’t been a single second when I wasn’t drowning in regret? I’ve imagined countless ‘what ifs.’ What if I hadn’t done something so unforgivable back then? What if we’d had a normal beginning? What if I had recognized my own feelings sooner and chosen to love you properly? Would the ending have been different?”“I took away the only sister you had in this world. I truly have no right to see you again. But there’s one question that has been haunting me. Even if it

West looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body. He didn’t resist at all. He allowed the police to escort him into the patrol car without a single struggle.Jake, too, accepted reality just as quickly. When he left, the light had vanished in his eyes.Only Nina struggled violently, completely ignoring the police warnings, and screamed curses at me at the top of her lungs. “Erin, you scheming witch! You’ll die a horrible death! Don’t think you’ve won just because of this! One day, I’ll get out and kill you myself. I’ll make you understand that not everyone can be offended!“A lowly orphan like you should’ve died under my car along with your sister back then. At least your sister’s heart was useful. You’re completely worthless! Mmph–”Before she could finish, someone stuffed a filthy rag torn straight off a mop into her mouth. The person who did it was West’s secretary, Hamish. Overwhelmed by the stench, Nina burst into tears, her face soaked with tears. However, wi

West seemed frozen in place. He didn’t even react to the flashing cameras in front of him. Staring at me in disbelief, he asked hoarsely, “So… you knew all of this?”At that moment, a dark figure suddenly rushed into my line of sight. It was Nina. Her face twisted with rage as she grabbed a chair and swung it straight at me. However, before the chair could reach me, West stepped in front of me, and the heavy blow landed squarely on his back instead. He let out a muffled groan, yet still stood firmly between Nina and me. The next second, he kicked Nina to the ground. His eyes were bloodshot as he roared, “Didn’t I tell you never to touch her? We will always owe her for this. Don’t you understand what that means?”As he spoke, he showed no mercy. He lifted his foot and stomped hard on the hand Nina had used to wield the chair. His loss of control shocked even me. As it turned out, between Nina and West, West was the truly unhinged one.Nina let out a piercing scream and cried as

Over the next seven days, I deliberately kept my distance from West. However, instead of getting annoyed, he became even more attentive.Whenever work allowed, he would come by just to check on me. He even turned down Nina’s dinner invitations several times, choosing instead to come home on time to keep me company. Nina sulked in silence more than once, but West remained completely oblivious. At last, the day of the company’s IPO launch event arrived. Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, West stood on stage, delivering a confident speech about the company’s future. As a strategic partner, Jake also came on stage, bringing Nina with him. With a remote in hand, West began showcasing the company’s major achievements on the massive screen behind him. However, the moment the visuals appeared, the entire hall erupted.“What is this?”Guests and media alike stared at the screen in shock because what was playing were the records I had gathered—evidence of West and Jake’s joint involvemen

After returning home, I carefully studied the copied files. Only then did I realize that I had made the right bet. The project was indeed an investment that West had specifically prepared for Jake.Four years ago, through Jake’s connections at the hospital, West obtained a batch of the latest medical examination reports. Those records clearly showed that my sister, Iris Bell’s heart, was a perfect match for Nina, who suffered from a heart condition. With that, he instructed Jake to get close to me, to pursue me, and to make me fall in love with him so they could gain complete control over both my movements and Iris’s. Soon after, without either of us knowing, they staged a car accident.Using their extensive connections, West and Jake secretly transferred Iris away while she was still clinging to life. She clearly still had a chance to survive, but for the sake of transplanting her heart into Nina, they went ahead and performed the surgery anyway, cutting my sister open and removin

The moment Hamish said that, West shoved the office door open violently. I was hiding inside the small lounge attached to his office, my back pressed tightly against the door. I was afraid to breathe too loudly.Thankfully, the alarm hadn’t gone off, and the password input had been successful.Yet, because I’d been forced to retreat in a hurry, I had only exited the interface. If West sat down at the desk and took a single glance at the computer, he would immediately notice something was wrong. However, clearly, he had no such intention right now. Through the narrow gap in the door, I saw him drenched in sweat, rummaging frantically through the cabinets as if searching for something important. He searched for a long time but couldn’t find what he wanted. Then, without warning, he strode straight toward the lounge. Cold sweat instantly broke out on my forehead. The lounge only had a table and a bed. There was nowhere to hide.Just as West was about to push the door open, a voice sto
