Chapter 4

The roaring in the chapel downstairs finally stopped. Upstairs, it was all quiet.

Dad finally moved. The first thing he did was not to inspect me, but to try to close that splintered door. He spun and roared down the stairs, "What are you all gawking at? Sit down!"

He wanted to sweep this disaster he'd caused under the rug.

Erik trembled on the ground and then scrambled to get on his feet. "Dad, Andrea's—"

"Shut up!" Dad snapped. "It was an accident, nothing more!"

He was just about to say

Some life finally returned to Dad's ashen face. It was the kind of energy that was twisted, formed by the world's betrayal. He looked at Erik, then at Grand-Uncle Vincent and the family he'd once controlled like minions. Then, the corners of his mouth slowly quirked upward, stretching his lips into an ugly grimace. The two police officers stepped forward, flanking Dad and grabbing his arms. "Mr. Daniel Jacobson, please come with us to the station."Just as the officers were about to drag Dad away from the judgment he'd set up himself, Nicholas interjected, "Wait."Taking out the last document—a thin set—from his briefcase, Nicholas opened the pages before the relatives. "This is the last part of Ms. Jacobson's will."Everyone stopped. Even the two police officers went still.Dad stiffened and slowly turned back, fixing his gaze on Nicholas, who narrated my will, "Regarding the disposal of personal effects and assets, please bury me with the silver moon necklace left behind by my

Nicholas added, "Ms. Jacobson saved some rather interesting voice recordings while she was studying the app."A recording of a conversation began to play from the phone speaker. The speaking voice was mine. "Look, Erik. This way, we won't lose our points!"After that came Erik's voice, the voice I once thought belonged to the most dependable person in the world. "Is that right? You didn't tell Dad, did you?""We're the only ones who know about this.""Clever little thing! Let's keep this to ourselves. Leave it to me."I could hear the smile in his voice in the recording.A deathly silence filled the room. Everyone's gaze moved from the phone to Erik's face as he froze on the ground. All the color drained from his face. The recording stopped, but a second one followed. The background was quiet and still. It was probably recorded in the library.Erik's voice had lost all its warmth, replaced by a sycophantic edge as he said, "Dad, it seems Andrea's found a glitch in the system an

A restless buzz filled the staircase landing. At first, some of my relatives craned their necks to peer up the stairs. Then, curiosity must have gotten the better of them, for frantic footsteps traveled up the steps. The footsteps belonged to my Aunt Catherine. She was the first to rush to the scene. The moment she stepped into the room, she was taken aback by Dad at the doorway, then startled to see Erik on the floor. After that, her gaze fell on my bed where I lay and the empty prescription bottle on my nightstand. Her hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes darted around the room and quickly snagged on the two uniformed figures."Officers!" Aunt Catherine wailed, shattering the last shred of propriety in the chapel as she flung herself not at me but at the two police officers. Sniveling and sobbing, she pleaded with them, "Please, you have to save us!"Daniel Jacobson is evil, through and through! The app he created has done nothing besides giving our children nightmares!"To make a

"It was an accident, nothing more!"He was just about to say something when clear, even footsteps traveled up the stairs. Whoever the footsteps belonged to was in no rush.A man in a suit and gold-framed glasses appeared at the staircase landing. He carried a briefcase. He looked past Dad, who stood at the door, and Erik, who was still on the floor, before his gaze fell on me.He nodded in greeting."Who are you?" Dad demanded, his body stiff. "Who let you in?""Mr. Jacobson." The man ignored Dad's questions. "I'm Mr. Ingram, Ms. Jacobson's lawyer."

I heard two sets of footsteps shuffle around outside as Dad and Erik adjusted their positions. I also heard them draw deep breaths.Another bang. Another hard shove against the door, which caved under impact. A crack sounded through the air as the wood splintered.Terrified, I curled into a ball. The most painful memories buried deep in my soul swarmed over my head, drowning me. Breathing became difficult. It was the eve of Independence Day.In an attempt to show our family's united front, Dad held a barbecue specially for the occasion. Grease from the meat skewers dripped over crackling flames and red-hot charcoal, the heat rising from the pit carrying with it a mouthwatering, smoky scent. Our relatives sat huddled around the barbecue pit as if it were a camping event. Everyone was beaming and laughing.Erik perched beside me, diligently turning the skewers for Dad and addressing him with just the right amount of respect.Dad ate it up."Erik's working on quite a forward-looki

The few heavy knocks on the door were met with silence on the other side."Andrea, Dad wants you in the chapel. The rest of the family's waiting."There was still no response."Did you hear me? Andrea, are you trying to get me punished alongside you? I'm talking to you! Say something!"The knocks grew louder until Erik was full-on banging on the door. The wooden door creaked under his fist, rattling as if it would cave and splinter. It was precisely the sound of impatient knocking that startled me awake a month ago. I'd found myself dragged out of bed, still in my sleepwear, and cornered in Dad's study. It began when I found a glitch in the app's programming. As long as we checked into the system at 4:44 am, our points would stack once by mistake. I told my only older brother, Erik, of this secret."Look, Erik." I'd presented him with my phone as if it were some rare treasure. "This way, we won't lose our points!"He'd leaned in close and flashed me a gentle smile. "Is that rig
