ELDORA’S POV

EARLIER THAT EVENING

I flick a piece of fry up and catch it in my mouth, grinning at my own stupid little trick. Roman doesn’t look up, he’s buried in something on his desk so I lob another one at the side of his head.

“Ow?”

I snort. “What are you so concerned about? Your burger is getting cold.” I wave him over with one hand, crumbs sprinkling from my fingers.

He finally drags himself away from the papers. “Fredrick is back.” The words make me sit up so fast my chair squeaks.

“What? When? how do you know?”

“This evening. Someone at the administration office called me. I asked earlier and apparently he was sent out on his own evaluation.”

“By himself?”

“No, someone went with him. I’ve sent a message to have his partner investigated in case there is also a connection to the believers.”

Roman’s face is all business now. He thinks of everything. I smooth the crumbs off my jeans. “Wow.” Am I even helping? “So what’s the plan now?”

Phineas is inches from my face when I clamp onto his fist and hold him there. I tear my eyes away from Eldora’s crumpled form and stare straight into his eyes. Surprise flashes across his features then a twisted grin, like he’s enjoying the violence. “What do you think you’re doing?” My voice is audible but anger bleeds from each word. “I’m just following orders. She needs to go.” “Orders? Don’t you know who that is?” He tries to yank his hand free; I squeeze harder. “That’s Eldon Thorne, is it not? Eldora Maine.” He says it too casually, brows lifted as if he’s asking for directions. So he knows. He knows exactly what he’s doing and still doesn’t seem to care that he just hurt his friend. My grip tightens until his smile falters. “Alright. Enough of that!” He snaps, winding up and driving his other leg into me. The kick forces me to release his hand, but I don’t slide far before my feet find purchase. This isn’t the half-hearted strength he shows back during the sparring sessi

ELDORA’S POV You were just telling me about your feelings for me… so why? Why aren’t you moving anymore? Why are my hands—shaking so badly—covered in your blood? “Darien…” My voice cracks, breaking apart like glass. “Please…” I choke on the word as my sobs spill out uncontrollably. “Please, don’t leave me too!” My fingers clutch at his shirt, desperate and trembling, as if that can somehow hold his soul in place. The world around me blurs; sound, color, everything fading until all that’s left is the warmth draining from his body and the echo of my scream in the air. “HEAL!” - DARIEN’S POV “Roman’s always been weird,” I say with a shrug, slipping into my usual nonchalant tone. “Tell me about it.” She chuckles softly. It’s a lighter sound than before, freer. The last time I saw her, she carried herself like the whole world was pressing down on her shoulders. Now, that weight seems… gone. “Did something good happen?” I ask, studying her expression. “You seem happier.” She he

A FEW DAYS LATER The late sun hangs low in the sky, spilling gold across the park. The air is warm but soft, carrying a gentle breeze that rustles through tall, swaying trees. Somewhere far off, a streak of dark clouds looms on the horizon; hinting an omen of rain that doesn’t quite reach us yet. Elio and I are sitting on a park bench, a deck of cards scattered between us. But honestly? I might as well be on another planet, because I’m completely, utterly screwed. Ever since I saw her at the diner, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her. Especially that night at Roman’s birthday banquet; Eldora in that dress, black hair glinting like silk under the lights. I’m just realizing that I unconsciously made the shade exactly like mine. She looked nothing like Eldon. She looked… otherworldly. I never knew enjoying her company would lead to this. At first it was just curiousity… ‘Damn it, Darien Artemis!’ I groan, slapping my forehead. ‘She has a mate!’ Elio doesn’t even look up

Eldora tilts her head, looking between us. “How did you figure Noroya was a part of them?” “We found traces of her magic after the Dome incident at the Alpha games.” I explain, keeping my voice steady. “It was identical to the magic found on me…” “That’s true.” Eldora nods, thinking it over. “What happened where you were?” “Nothing major. I was assigned to storage; made sure the fire started there and spread. I was worried about the room you came out of, but it burned down too.” I watch her reaction closely. The worst is always the little things that pull at her. “Yeah. I fixed the circles in place when I first got there. It was important.” She says it simply, like she’s ticking off a list she doesn’t want to think about too long. Father looks up, searching our faces. “Am I missing something here?” I shift in my seat. Time to keep a few cards close to my chest. “The VIPs… we think they’re students from the academy but we aren’t sure, since we didn’t particularly see anything.” T

“Thank you again for not going on a rampage in there,” I say as we drive back to the mansion. The city lights flash across the windshield, painting us both in brief golds and reds. Eldora’s seat is reclined, her knees tucked to her chest. In the oversized clothes, she looks smaller, quieter, like someone carrying the weight of what could have happened. Deflated would be the word I’m looking for. “I’m not stupid,” she murmurs, eyes fixed on the car roof. “I know what that would’ve caused if I lost control.” She sighs, dropping her feet to the floor. “But I was this close to doing it…” “I felt it,” I admit softly. “What stopped you?” “The Seer.” “The Seer?” I blink, confused. “The Elf I told you about? The one who healed me.” “Oh, right. She said something to you?” “She said I’d get another chance for revenge… but that it would make me a villain.” Her voice fades. “And I… remembered that. I realized if I gave in, I’d just be doing just that. Feeding their cause.” I glance at he
