"What would the Alpha do now?" Elder Heinrich finally broke the long silence. The quietest of the Elders, said to govern the Asia Province of the Schmidt, his words cut through the tension like a blade.

"Heinrich… and everyone here," Reinhardt began, calm but firm, "I am sorry for troubling you and leaving the headquarters in disarray. But I must be clear: I am the Alpha. I am not here to undermine this family’s legacy."

"We can see that," Lady Gertrude groaned, her patience worn thin.

"I am requesting the family’s permission to take this lady, Lisa, as my mate at least until I discover what she truly is," Reinhardt said, his voice steady in the heavy silence.

Whispers surged through the hall like ripples across still water.

"I don’t understand you! Mate? Never! Do you even know what she is, that you want her as your mate? She’s a nobody!" Gertrude yelled, her words bouncing off the walls.

"And what do you mean, 'until you find out what she is'?" Elder Kasoer demanded, his eyes sharp

“Lena… look who we have here.” A thunderous voice echoed through the dark dungeon where Lisa was confined. Her hair was yanked back roughly, her face swollen from repeated blows. She stirred weakly, half-conscious, barely clinging to awareness. Her eyes struggled to focus on the figures moving toward her. “Hello, Lisa.” The voice was soft, sonorous, one she barely recognized. Lisa tried to lift her head. Her hands were already bound to chains, restrained like an animal. The cold metal bit into her wrists. Then she heard it. The slow roll of a wheelchair. The wheelchair… the voice… “That’s Veronica’s mother,” Lisa realized through the haze. Lady Gertrude’s arch-enemy. Lena. What is she doing on enemy ground? It’s too soon for the Schmidts to send a negotiator… especially for someone like me. “Lena,” the coarse voice spoke again, “I’d say your instincts are usually sharp. But why would you need this kind of person?” Lisa didn’t need to see him to know. That voice… the conf

The tunnel was wide, about six feet tall, enough for a human of average height to stand upright without difficulty. “I wonder how many years it took that vengeful old man to dig this,” Lisa muttered, her gaze fixed on the pitch-black stretch ahead, a darkness ready to swallow her whole. Philip had given her a key and instructed her to wait until the small hours of the night, when security would be looser. He had been right. The tunnel opened directly into Belltown territory. From where she waited, Lisa could hear heavy footsteps and the constant chatter of young men, voices thick with energy and arrogance. “I’d better bide my time until this dies down,” she sighed quietly. “I can’t handle all that testosterone on my own.” Stealth was everything now. Three hours later, silence finally settled over the area. Lisa slowly raised her head from the pit, carefully scanning for movement. From that position, she couldn’t tell if anyone was still nearby. She climbed out and immediately

“Why?” Lisa finally broke the silence. They lay beside each other, motionless, the air between them heavy after the intensity they had shared. It felt as though both of them were only just returning to themselves.“Why that?” Reinhardt threw the question back, his voice low.Lisa didn’t answer. She pushed herself up from the bed and moved toward the bathroom.“No need,” she said without looking at him. “Get out of my room. I need some time alone, Reinhardt.”She shut herself into the bathroom.Reinhardt remained where he was, confused by the sudden shift in her mood. The warmth of the moment had vanished too quickly, replaced by a cold distance he didn’t understand. He searched the room as if answers might be lying around him. Had he been too rash? Too careless? Had his lack of restraint made him lose whatever fragile ground he had gained with her?In the bathroom, Lisa turned on the shower. Water cascaded down as she stepped beneath it, scrubbing herself as if she could wash away the

Reinhardt was stunned by her reaction. Sweet Lisa. The innocent, shy one from before. He stood there for several seconds, staring at the hallway she had disappeared into, torn between going after her or leaving her alone. He finally exhaled and lowered himself back into his chair, though the moment he sat, he felt restless. His eyes drifted to the small fountain of water in the middle of the living room, the one he usually found calming, but tonight its gentle flow only emphasized the silence she left behind. “That girl… she seems troubled,” he thought, rubbing a hand over his face. He replayed her words, every insult, every sharp remark, but they didn’t cut him the way they should have. He understood. He knew exactly why she lashed out. I won’t take it to heart, he told himself. I’m the cause of her frustration, anyway. He had been distant. Cold. Cruel, even. But he had his reasons. He just have to be that way in order to keep the trust of the family. Reinhardt stood ab

She dragged herself through the narrow alley that led to Reinhardt’s apartment, her makeshift prison for the last eight months. She had lied to Tesa, saying Reinhardt wanted him to help manage the family finances, which was why they had been “kind" enough to keep her in the building. But even as she said it, she knew Tesa didn’t believe her. Lately Tesa always seemed tense, on edge, and Lisa rarely saw her anymore. Lisa was still lost in these thoughts when she realized she had reached the apartment door. She took a slow breath, steadying herself, preparing for the next day when she would attempt to infiltrate Belltown territory. She prayed, as always, not to cross paths with Reinhardt. Most days, her prayer was answered; he was barely around anymore, coming home late that is if he came home at all, and sleeping out most nights. None of that mattered to Lisa, not really. Reinhardt rarely smiled at her, rarely spoke to her, and she preferred it that way. All she wanted was to prove h

“What’s your name, young lady?”The bald man with the roguish eyeglass leaned forward, squinting at her through a haze of cocaine dust and the scent of expensive wine. Two nearly–naked women drifted around him like drugged butterflies, trained to smile even while dying inside. He exhaled a thick plume of smoke toward the ceiling.“My name is Magdalene,” Lisa said, voice crisp, confident , almost arrogant. She wore elegance like armor; the kind of high-class woman who wasn’t here for pleasure but for business. Deadly business.“I heard you’re the best when it comes to information about the Belltown packs,” she continued, placing her briefcase on the table without asking permission.“What you saying, Magda-what?”He laughed, a sour, phlegm-ridden sound. Even the two women flinched before quickly masking it behind forced smiles.“What do you know about Belltown packs?” he sneered. “You don’t walk into my place and talk shit like that, Magda-shit.”Lisa didn’t blink. Her face didn’t even
