Amalthea's POV

The masked man didn't say a word, and walked past me without much of a glance as he walked out the door.

What the hell just happened? One minute I thought he was going to touch me inappropriately or worse still kill me, and now, he was covering me up?

What in the world is happening?

“You got lucky,” the gruff man that brought me here muttered darkly. “If he didn't like you, you'd have begged for death–and it wouldn't come.”

A shiver ran down my spine as his words sank in. I'm I really lucky as he said? Or would death have been a better option.

I barely had time to process all that just happened when a knock came on the door, and Lara stepped in, her eyes buried to the ground as if afraid to meet my gaze.

“These are for you,” Lara quietly handed me leggings, a plain top, boots and a jacket.

I stared at the clothes for a few minutes, tempted to ask Lara questions, she looks like she'll have an idea of what I'm getting into, but with the way her eyes were on anywhere but on me, tells me it was a lost cause.

She wouldn't breathe a word no matter what I asked her.

“Thank you,” I muttered, not knowing what else to say, I changed into the clothes.

Lara led me outside, and the masked man stood by a car–his car. He glanced at me with an unnerving intensity, before looking over at the gruff man.

“Get your ass into the car,” the gruff man whispered harshly, and as always my legs obeyed without complaints. “Don't forget to put in a good word for me to his majesty,” the gruff man said as soon as I got into the masked man's car, and as if the gruff man didn't exist, the masked man moved over to the driver's seat, and started the car.

We had barely driven fifteen minutes when my eyes began to feel heavy, like I haven't slept for days.

I tried to fight the urge to sleep–I needed to at least know where I was being driven off to, but the more I fought to keep my eyes open the heavier they became.

The violent screeching sound of tires jolted me awake. My heart nearly jumped out of my throat as our car veered off the road, and crashed into the woods.

Pain exploded in my skull, as my head slammed against the dashboard.

“Shift, we are being ambushed.”

“W–what?” My heart skipped several beats. We're being ambushed? By who? I looked around but didn't see anyone–or anything.

“Shift,” he stated firmly, and stepped out of the car. “Unless you want to die.”

Die? The words seemed to clear my vision and senses as I saw seven hefty looking men emerge from the woods.

Panic surged through me at their imposing form.

“We're here for the lady,” one of the bulky men said, as I stepped out of the car.

“Me?” The words left my lips before I could even blink, and this time around I feared my heart would jump out my throat.

Was Lilian not satisfied with kicking me out of her brother's life that she has to send people over to kill me?

Oh goddess! Please don't let him hand me over to them.

“Hand her over, and we ‘might’ not hurt you,” another added

Dread washed over me in different waves at their words. I looked over at the masked man, is expression unreadable.

A cold sweat broke out my forehead.

Dead.

I was good as dead. This is definitely the end of the road for me.

Back at the dungeon I thought I was ready to embrace the afterlife, but being face to face with death is on a whole different level than actually wishing for it.

“Did you hear a word I just said?” The masked man hissed harshly, his eyes not leaving the men as they made their way towards us.

“I–I c-can’t shift,” I stuttered, my voice barely above a whisper, tears streaming down my cheeks as the reality of my predicament dawned on me.

“Skies above,” he stared at me in disbelief. “You're wolfless?”

Before I could respond one of the men lunged at the masked man, shifting mid air.

“Oh goddess!” I choked out, every ounce of air in my lungs getting stucked in my throat. My mind couldn't process what I was seeing for a moment, then it hit me.

A werebear!

I'd heard stories of them–terrifying beast from the north–but I'd never seen one. That explains while the men looked so huge, and the size of them in their beast form was–was beyond frightening.

Bam!

Without breaking a sweat the masked man sent the werebear flying into a tree with a single punch.

My jaw dropped, for a moment I couldn't blink, every fiber in me screaming for me to take to my heels. This was my opportunity to be free, from the masked man and from the werebears.

But my feet stayed rooted to the ground, dread washing over me with every single breath. I didn't know which was more terrifying, being captured by the werebear–for goddess knows what reason, or being taken away by this terribly frightening masked man.

I was still trying to decide what to do when I felt a cold hand grabbed me from behind.

“Gotcha!”

I slowly turned my head and my eyes landed on one of the werebears. He has a sinister smile that sent a chill down my spine. “Hello beautiful,” he purred, tightening his grip around my arm as he pulled me closer. “Get away from me!” I screamed in terror, years burning my vision as I tried freeing myself from his grip. “Please,” I choked out, still struggling to set myself free. “”Please just let me go.” “Sure thing beautiful,” he let got of me, his eyes watching me like a hawk as he trailed his fingers reached out to caress my cheeks, making my skin crawl “Don't touch me!” My voice came out harsher than I intended as I jerked my head back. “Feisty, huh?” He gave me a sinister smile, and was about to touch my cheeks again when I sank my teeth between his thumb and his index finger, biting down hard till the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

Amalthea's POV The air in the room suddenly felt suffocating, and I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that the Lycan King just stepped in.Slowly I turned around, and saw a tall figure with an imposing presence at the door. I couldn't make out his face completely, but I could tell he was watching me intently.Bam! He banged the door behind him, making me flinch and I instinctively tightened my hand around the alarm clock.“D–don’t come any closer,” I stuttered as he took a step forward. I raised the alarm clock, positioning it like a weapon. Even though it was laughable that I'm holding up an alarm clock as a defense against the Lycan king, I still needed to defend myself.“What do you think you're doing?” He asked, in a voice that sounded all too familiar.I decided not to ponder on the familiarity of the voice and just focused on fighting him off in whatever way I can.My heart skipped a beat as he took a step forward…then another, and another…and with each step my hand tightened

Amalthea’s POVKing Nicholson? Have I heard correctly? My brain is paralyzed by the shock as I keep tracing red lines on the dashboard in my mind. The voice, the build, the same pair of gray eyes. They all matched the same person. It was always the damn mask from the start that misled me. My eyes widened as it finally clicked. If this was the Lycan king, then the person I brought me here was the Lycan king himself!Oh goddess! That was why he mocked me last night when I attempted to throw a damn clock at his head! Why did he have to put on a mask? Worse still, why did he pretend to be Beta Callum? What was his motive behind doing that? Different thoughts raced through my mind all at once.Other trainees around me at this point had long fallen silent and were bowing their heads in the direction of the Lycan king while I was already grazing the floor of the training ground. His cold stare was unwavering as he peered down at me, whipping at his nostril before spitting somewhere close

Nicholson's POV “How is she?” Maybe it was the urgency in which I used to approach the physician but he took a step back into the room, before edging me out subtly so he could close the door behind me. He cracked a smile. “I heard she is your breeder. Well—” The physician started and I was suddenly struck by the nerve. My action made me appear even more desperate than I actually was. I was supposed to be an alpha. Besides, she was supposed to just be my breeder. No one cares about a breeder who isn't carrying their child yet. I felt embarrassed. To save myself from the embarrassment, I simply walked past the doctor into the hospital room just as he was about to tell me about her condition. I closed the door behind me, emptying my mind from the thoughts of the doctor and focused on the woman on the bed. She's awake. She isn't laying completely on her back. Instead, she is propped up on a pillow that gives her a higher elevation. She was sipping water from a plastic cup with both he

Nicholson's POV Shutting the door behind me, I sighed. I peered my ears to the door to hear if she would say anything behind my back. Instead, I heard a strong sniff which delivered more than a punch to my heart. I bounced off the door like it suddenly caught on fire. The physician was at the end of the hall conversing with a nurse. I admonished the thought of asking him again for her condition after being the one who walked out on him in the first place. I decided the counter would be the next best place to go. I needed to make sure her card batch would be opened anyways. From what I have experienced about her, I had a feeling she would be visiting her frequently. I mean, she didn't even get to fight Mikayla. All she did was throw a punch—unsuccessfully. And she still ended up falling to the ground. Thinking that's the worse case scenario, she ended up falling and hurting herself after conceding defeat. I shook my head, wondering if this was the kind of woman I really wanted to use

Nicholson's POV “Yes…Alpha.”She answered, keeping her eye level down to her torso as she played with her fingers. She was obviously nervous and her face was tainted with a heavy blush of embarrassment after almost falling back on her head and getting herself into the ER again. “Amalthea…” I called her name. It wasn't a very common name, but it was befitting for someone like her. Her hair resembled the opening of a wild desert rose, if they were ever colored blond by chance. I realized I had nothing to say when she looked up at me with those heavy blue doe eyes. I was just finding out how her name tasted on my tongue. With nothing else to say, I let myself out of her room while she still had an expectant look on her face. I left the clinic completely and stood some feet away from the white and red building, looking at the vast path that led back to the training ground. The cars packed to my left were all glowing under the sun, showing just how intense the sun could get in the middl

Nicholson's POV I did keep to my words though. The moment I got into my office, I pulled out a brown glass of bourbon and poured myself a generous amount into a rocky glass cup. It was just a few millimeters shy from pouring over, so I had the excuse of sipping it half way through before filling it back up again. I looked up at her, surprised she didn't have any ‘drunk’ comment till now, even though I was doing everything I usually did to earn the name, she just wasn't having it. I rested my head back on my office chair and narrowed my eyes at her. “You are mad at something.” I said, making her know it wasn't a question but an actual statement. She seemed to be unfazed by my discovery. “I certainly do not look like a happy chap.” She tilted her head to the side, holding some kind of mild frown at me. I decided to empty my glass and bring another clean one from beneath my table—yes, I have glasses of shot laying around me, doesn't mean I am actually a drunk. It actually means I am a

Amalthea’s POV I couldn't sleep. I could overhear the nurses gossiping about the state of my mind and body. The news of my weakness traveled faster than I would have liked it to, but then again, it literally happened in the middle of the training ground right in front of everyone who didn't know me. But somehow they knew what role I was playing staying in the Alpha’s house. How did my life come to this though? Just a few nights back and I could perfectly picture Fredrick perks in the shade of moonlight that spilled through his oval window. Oh, that dream house and how he didn't care for the silver he had around the room. He said it looked dashing on me, so he had it around to remind him of how rare of a gem I was. I knew Fredrick loved me, even in the moment of the greatest misfortune of my life, which was ironically caused by his own flesh and blood. I gripped the shit beneath my feet trying to digest the leftover rage that rushed through me recalling now she spat in my face all t

I rose from my chair."Just Seb is fine." He retorted and I blanked. The use of his nickname would imply a level of intimacy between us."I don't think that would be proper Alpha." I pointed out."I insist." He replied with a smile.I nodded, not having a word to say in response, as the level of intensity in his eyes when he looked at me was making this whole conversation awkward. It's either he's oblivious to that fact or he simply doesn't care."Did you need a book?" I asked, breaking the silence."No." He answered."I wanted to talk to you." He announced.I blinked. He chuckled. Amalthea's POV "Where have you been?" I asked Jade when she walked into the library. She remained silent and leaned against the closed library door with a dreamy sigh as she clutched her chest."Jade?" I called out to her and slowly her eyes met mine. "Are you alright?" "I'm better than alright Thea." She composed herself and walked towards me."What has you in such a good mood?" I questioned."I'm always in a good mood." She replied almost defensively and I knew something was up."Hmm, where have you been? You were meant to be here an hour ago." I queried.A blush slowly crept up her face and my lips parted in shock."Jade, why are you blushing?" I shut the book in front of me and placed it on the side table."I'm not blushing." She muttered attempting to hide behind her hair."You are clearly blushing Jade. Spit it out, what happened?" I probbed. She remained silent and I waited."It's alright if you don't want to talk about it now, I just-" I began to explain."I met someone." S

Amalthea's POV "We have a dinner to get ready for." Jade announced as she strolled into my room."What?" I closed the book I was reading and turned to her."Surely you know we have guests." Jade said as though that would be enough explanation.I furrowed my brow. "How does that have to do with me?" "We are having dinner with the alpha of the visiting pack, of course you are attending with me." Jade shrugged as she moved towards my closet."No, there is no way I'm attending another dinner with you." I frowned."But it will be fun." She whined and I rolled my eyes."Like the last dinner was fun?" I asked her pointedly and she immediately averted her gaze."Look, this is different. Nic will be busy handling pack affairs with the other alpha and we will have the whole night to ourselves without any interruptions." She tried to persuade me.I knew nothing would make Jade relent but I didn't want to be in the same space with Nicholson and she knew that."Jade-" I began but she turned to

She staggered back, looking at me with predatory eyes as she struggled to catch her breath. When next she lunged for me I half expected it and I positioned myself and waited and just when she was close enough my leg struck out but to my surprise she caught it and dragged me towards her before delivering a punch right to my face.Mikayla released me and I fell to the ground with a groan."You have to be quick and on the tips of your feet. You need to learn how to carry yourself so as to move swiftly and maneuver whatever situation you might find yourself in." She explained. "Never be overconfident." Nicholson's POVStanding by the window, as I stared out into the open with a bottle of whiskey in hand, as I took slow deliberate gulps, I heard a knock on my door.I sighed, already knowing who was at the door, but I wasn't in the mood to see anyone or entertain any form of conversation. So, I chose to ignore it, hoping that Callum would finally take the hint and leave me alone, but he was stubborn as a horse, and Instead of leaving, he chose to invite himself in."I don't recall telling you to come in." I said, not bothering to look at him."Isn't it a bit early to be drinking?” Callum said, ignoring my earlier statement."I desperately need it." I replied, but minding that it was just a few minutes past 6 am. “What do you want?” I finally turned to look at him.Callum narrowed his eyes. "What's on your mind?” “Nothing,” I muttered. “Why are you here?” I asked irritatedly, as I wasn't in the mood for one of his lectures."This is about her isn't it?" He asked quietly."About who?"

Nicholson's POV "How did you find the letters?" I asked Mikayla as I leaned back in my chair, scanning the contents of the notes once more.I was considerably more calm now and I had to admit I was ashamed and sickened by my outburst. I always prided myself on my ability to school my features and remain calm despite every situation but I always seemed to be out of character wherever Amalthea was involved.I cringed as I recalled how I had blatantly accused her and worse, threatened her without waiting to hear what she had to say. I wondered what she must think of me at this moment."Nic?" Mikayla called out to me, drawing me out of my thoughts.I stared down at the piece of paper in my hand and yet I didn't recognize the messy scribbles but then again I didn't know Amalthea's writing style."Did you say something?" I asked, focusing back on Mikayla."Yes. One of the maids was cleaning and she informed me she found something that seemed out of sorts on Amalthea's dresser. She was scar

Amalthea's POV It had to be today. I had to leave this horrid pack today, I refused to spend another minute in the same vicinity as that blackguard.I clenched my fists as I tried to blink back the tears that were rapidly making their way to the front of my eyes.I felt like it was happening all over again.I was being framed for something I didn't do for the second time and soon I would be thrown out."Thea, are you alright?" Jade made her way back into the library."Why wouldn't I be?" I asked. My voice betrayed me and Jade walked briskly to where I stood by the window."What happened?" Jade asked, gently caressing my arms."That...that despicable-" a sob tore through me."Hey, it's alright. Just take a deep breath." Jade comforted me.I took in a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves."Your alpha somehow believes that I am in contact with the werebears." I explained."Why would he think that?" She asked, with wide eyes."Apparently he found some incriminating letters on my dresser

Nicholson's POV "The seer was unable to provide any useful information." I informed Callum. "How is that possible? He knows everything." Callum looked as confused as I felt. "He said some nonsense about not wanting to alter fate but the main thing is he couldn't tell me anything." I explained in frustration. "What are you going to do now?" Callum asked and I rubbed my hand down my face. "I don't know." I admitted and it was true. I was at a loss for what to do. "Would you consider handing the girl over?" Callum asked. "That is not an option." I said with finality. Callum looked at me for a few seconds, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "What's so amusing?” I gritted out. "Nothing at all." Callum shrugged. "We better find a way around this, and early,” he suggested, and just then a knock came on the door. "Come in." I said, as I could already tell how as at the door. Mikayla strolled in. "What is wrong?" I asked. "I have something to show you Nic." She said and

Amalthea's pov "Is everything okay?" Jade's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. "I'm fine." I muttered, not looking at her as I flipped a page of my book absentmindedly. "You have been reading the same page of that book for the last fifteen minutes." She pointed out. "I'm trying to dissect the text." I said lamely. Jade snorted, not believing a word I just said. But I couldn't care less at the moment, since we got back from the seer, my mind hasn't been at ease. Different thoughts were racing through my mind but mostly one bothered me the most. If the werebears indeed came for me why hasn't he given me up yet? I definitely meant nothing to him and he had nothing to lose but everything to gain from stopping their attacks on his pack. If the attacks persisted would his decision waver? Would he eventually hand me over to them? I was losing my mind at this point. "You know you can talk to me, right Thea?" Jade said, her face etched with worry. I sighed, dropping the book to th
