Ersa

“Have you had a proper rest, ladies?” Elder Lumos asked the moment we arrived at the Temple of the Moon Goddess. He gestured for us to follow him deeper into the sanctuary. “Come.”

The air inside was heavy with the scent of ancient incense and cold stone. In the center of the hall stood towering statues of Goddess Selene. Even carved from marble, she looked majestic—ethereal and distant. On the floor before her sat two stone basins filled to the brim with dark, obsidian ink.

“Today is not about your strength or your lineage,” Elder Lumos whispered, his voice resonating like a low tolling bell against the vaulted ceiling. “It is about the weight of your own soul. I want you to take these basins, feel the gravity of the ink, and kneel. Raise them high, as if you are offering the very core of your being to the heavens to be judged.”

We followed his instructions, sinking onto our knees and lifting the heavy stone bowls. The weight immediately began to pull at my shoulders. The Elder

ErsaJust like the First Trial, we made our ascent under the cover of darkness. The steps leading to the crater of Mt. Fortitude were lined with torches, their orange flames dancing wildly in the wind, lighting our way like a trail of fire.I stood beside Eve at the base, but she stepped up first. The stairs were narrow, carved into the rock, and barely wide enough for one person. As we reached the top, the wind began to howl. Waiting for us were Elder Lumos, Elder Demeter, Madame Koraline, and Ser Gregory. They wore heavy ceremonial robes. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Alpha Sano standing just behind them. His eyes were locked on mine, filled with an intensity that made my skin prickle.Above us, the moon was nearing its highest point. We stood on the edge of the unknown, unsure of how our "truth" would be revealed."Kneel," Elder Lumos commanded. We sank to the hard ground, our hands clasped tightly together. The Prefects began to chant, a low, haunting sound that seemed to hum

ErsaThe next morning, Elder Lumos summoned us once again. His gaze immediately shifted to Eve. She was still ghostly pale, her usual fire dampened by the trauma of the previous night, but she stood tall.“I see you are recovering well, Eve,” the Elder began. “That puts my mind at ease. Resilience is a requirement for what comes next.”Eve didn’t say a word. She simply gave a short, respectful nod, her jaw set in a line of quiet determination.“Today, I am taking you to the place where it will all be decided: Mt. Fortitude.”I glanced at him, a frown tugging at my brow. It seemed he had finally decided to remove that cursed mirror from our training, but the way he said the mountain's name made my stomach twist with a different kind of unease. We rode in the carriage for a long time, winding through jagged obsidian rocks until we reached a volcano that stood apart from the rest. It wasn’t as massive as the ones in the heart of Ashfall, but it looked mighty all the same.We climbed a st

Ersa“Alpha,” I said, my voice carrying a note of weary finality. I looked up at him, trying to summon the resolve to be done with his games, especially this early in the morning.I was already drowning in the regret of having knocked on his door.“Hmm?” was his only response. He didn't pull away; instead, he leaned down, burying his face in the crook of my neck. The sudden, searing warmth of his skin against mine felt like comfort, momentarily anchoring me and making the terrors of the mirror and the nightmare vanish into the steam of the room.My resolve crumbled. My hand moved instinctively, traveling to the nape of his neck and burying itself in the thick softness of his hair. “I thought we were getting breakfast,” I whispered, though my fingers continued to trace the line of his scalp. He pulled back just enough to look me in the eye, his gaze dark and heavy. “Is that truly what you want? Or would you rather…” He didn't finish the sentence, his eyes dropping to my lips with a hun

ErsaI took another step back, then another, the distance between me and the glass feeling like the only thing keeping my sanity anchored. A sudden, sharp noise from the corridor—perhaps a door latch or a distant footfall—broke the spell. My gaze snapped away from the mirror for a fraction of a second, and in that moment, the fog in my mind cleared.I turned back to the reflection, my jaw set. “You’re no flaw of mine,” I stated, my voice ringing with a conviction I didn't know I still possessed. The reflection changed instantly. The sinister, mocking smile vanished, replaced by a mask of raw, genuine fury. It looked like a predator that had just seen its prey slip through the bars of a cage.“What are you?” I demanded. I didn’t dare move closer; the space between us felt like a sanctuary I couldn't afford to lose. The child’s eyes became impossibly cold, void of any human warmth. For the first time in my life, I felt a primal, bone-deep terror. If this was what Eve had faced, it was n

ErsaI was certain that when Elder Lumos called us again, Eve had successfully added another reason to her growing list of grievances against me.Her dark expression was one of barely contained fury, far angrier than any prior confrontation. The Final Trial was clearly pushing her past her limit, and desperation was setting in. The image of the friendship we once shared was becoming blurrier and blurrier each day, and I couldn't shake the heavy feeling that perhaps the entire collapse was somehow my fault.I heaved a sigh of frustration, trying to focus on the Elder’s instructions. “To attain genuine peace is to achieve a state of reconciliation with your absolute, essential self. Follow my lead.” He said and led us down the hall to a room where a massive, full-body mirror stood draped in shadow in the center of the floor.“I have brought a mirror from my personal collection,” he explained, his voice solemn.“It offers a vision almost identical to what transpires within the Wolf’s Hea
