KIARA
He was warm and he smelt so good. Regardless of how hesitant, I was, I didn't want to leave his embrace.
"Please," he whispered and I swallowed hard. His sincerity oozed from his words. He was tugging at the strings of my heart with so little effort.
A few seconds slipped by and he pulled away, enough to look at me.
"Your mate... the one you spoke of...is he the king of the Lycans?" He asked. Every muscle in my body went frigid.
When I didn't respond, he sighed.
"I didn't leave out that information on purpose. I didn't know how to tell you" I mumbled.
With the pad of his fingers, he wiped away the tears on my face. I looked up, my gaze meeting his gentle ones. A few locks of his hair had fallen over his face.
"Well, you're in luck. As long as you're in my territory, he will never get his hands on you again" he said, a mysterious glint in his eyes.
"Now, go. You can ask the maids to take you around the palace. I have issues to attend to."
I nodded and quietly left his office. My face had grown warm and despite myself, I couldn't stop the smile coming on.
"Look at your cheeks, they're so red" my smile widened at the sound of Cassy's voice. She was standing in the hallway, a smile tugging at her lips.
"So, how did it go?" She asked as we both stepped out into the garden.
Different kinds of flowers were growing here. They contributed to the pleasant smell of the environment. It was a bit strange though. We were basically on high land.
"I don't know. He's too good to be true. There's something about him. He's so charming-ugh!"
Reaching out to stroke the petal of an azalea, Cassy glanced at me.
"I get what you mean. I felt it too when I first saw him. I'm going to call it the Denzel effect. He seems nice. If you want to be with him, nothing's stopping you" she said.
I gazed up at the cloudy sky, dragging in a deep breath.
"I'm not ready yet. I mean...every fibre of my being is screaming for his touch. But, I still need time" I explained.
Cassy nodded, pushing her hair away from her face. Her hand was trembling, I noticed.
"I understand. Lucas hurt you deeply" she sighed.
"Cassy?"
"Hmm?"
"Are you alright?" I questioned.
She looked away from me, tugging down at one of the long sleeves of her shirt.
"I'm fine. I'll be back shortly. I need to use the bathroom" she blurted out.
Puzzled, I watched her hurry back into the castle. Something was definitely up with her.
"Hi," an unfamiliar voice said from behind me.
It was a young lady. She had her ash blonde hair in two french braids. She was dressed like a maid.
"Hi. What's your name?" I asked with a smile.
"Melissa."
"How long have you lived here in the palace?" I asked.
"A pretty long time" she responded.
"I heard that his Majesty's mate is a princess. You don't really look like one" she said, her grey eyes gleaming.
I frowned, "Pardon?"
"I mean, you're more beautiful than a princess. You must be a goddess" she said.
I chuckled awkwardly, brushing my hair away from my face.
"Have you heard?" She suddenly said, tilting her head a little.
"Heard what?"
"The night of the blue moon is tomorrow."
"Night of what? What's that?"
"It's understandable that you don't know about it. It's well known among the mountain wolves. Every night of the blue moon, our Alpha suffers alone."
I frowned, puzzled.
"I don't understand."
"None of us knows why. His beta probably knows. It was supposed to be a secret at first. One of the maids found him along the passage hall, writhing in pain."
I stared at her with mixed feelings. Not only was I beginning to feel strong concern towards my mate, my curiosity was growing as well.
"I have to get back to work. I'll see you later," Melissa said.
Before I could say anything else, she'd retreated into the interior of the palace.
...
It was nightfall already and I was standing along the hallway of the south end of the palace, my thoughts threatening to swallow me whole.
I desperately wanted to see my mate again. This feeling of wistfulness was growing by the second. It also left me with a sense of confusion.
Cassy was still acting weird. It was obvious she was hiding something from me.
I had not seen nor heard from Denzel since our conversation in his office, the previous day.
Worried, I gazed at the full moon through the spotless window glass. The moon had a strange hue of blue tonight. One I'd never seen before. Melissa's words repeated themselves in my head and I released a sigh, my eyes fluttering shut.
'Is Denzel somewhere in the palace suffering in silence?' I couldn't help but wonder.
I flinched at the sound of a resounding rumble of thunder which was immediately followed by a flash of lightning.
"If you're this worried about him, you should go check up on him."
At the sound of Melissa's voice, I turned around with a start. She smiled at me, raising her brows.
"So? What's it going to be?" She asked.
"I don't know... I'm not sure if he's going to be pleased about me showing up in his room," I replied.
"He's in a lot of pain right now, you know? Since you're here, you should go to him. Who knows? Your presence might ease some of his pain."
I bit my lower lip, clenching my fist.
"I can take you there...if you want?" She suggested.
Taking a deep breath, I nodded.
"Do it."
Melissa beamed at me. She led me up the palace. When we arrived in front of a pair of golden doors, she glanced at me.
"Go on in" She urged, gesturing at the door.
Squaring my shoulders, I pushed the door in and walked in. The room was almost completely dark. The only source of light was the moonlight spilling through the window.
Denzel's scent was strong here.
"Your majesty? It's me, Kiara" I breathed, edging towards the large bed in the centre of the room.
I received no response whatsoever.
Tensed, I moved even closer. A gasp tumbled out of my lips at the sight of my mate.
He lay on his bed, his face as white as sheets. His shoulder length hair was fanned out on the pillow, his forehead damp with sweat. His eyes were closed, his long eyelashes resting on the circles under his eyes.
On his toned upper torso were strange glowing marks that oozed darkness.
Furrowing my brows, I reached out to touch the mark on his collarbone. But, before I could, he'd grabbed my hand.
I tried to yank my hand out of his grip but found myself staring at the depthless pools of obsidian that had replaced his vibrant golden eyes.
"Denzel, you're hurting me" I croaked.
In a blink of an eye, he'd flipped our positions with his hands wrapped around my throat.
"Please...let go..." I choked, tears rolling down my cheeks.
The door was pushed open and a stranger dashed in. His green eyes widened, a string of curses escaping his lips when he saw me.
"Adam, let go of her. She's your mate," he said.
Denzel growled, flashing his prominent fangs.
But, why?
Why would he react to a name that wasn't his?
"It's true! Look at her. She's not Deanna!" the stranger stressed.
Denzel furrowed his brows, confusion flashing on his face as he stared at me, unblinking.
"Who are you?" He demanded, relaxing his grip on my throat.
Did he have an amnesiac condition I was unaware of?
The fact that he appeared to be genuinely clueless was terrifying.
"Denzel, it's me -"
He cut me off with a growl that sent shivers running down my spine.
He could snap my neck in half if he wanted.
I didn't want to die yet. Not like this.
"Don't call me that name!" He yelled, tightening his grip.
I coughed, kicking my legs in the air as I struggled with prying his fingers off my throat.
"I'm K-Kiara. Y-your m-mate" I choked out, tears burning my eyes.
KIARA "Kiara?" He breathed, pulling away. I nodded, dragging in a shaky breath. "Yes, It's me. Can you smell my scent?" I whispered. Slowly, he moved away from me and got out of bed. He stood under the glow of the moonlight, staring at me with glistening obsidian eyes. His hair danced with the rhythm of the cool breeze that swept into the room, making him seem ethereal. Recognition flashed in his eyes. Next came the appearance of guilt that clouded his eyes."Kiara... I'm sorry. I didn't-"I cut him off, sitting up on his bed. "You didn't do anything wrong. You didn't hurt me, it's okay" I said. He brought a hand to his head, his chest heaving. "You shouldn't be here" he winced. "Your majesty? You should lie down" the green eyed stranger said as he approached Denzel with his hands outstretched. "Kiara, please... just... leave" Denzel croaked, leaning against the stranger who steadied him the moment his knees buckled. I fought the urge to stay there. Quietly, I walked out
KIARA "W-what? It's not possible," I said, suddenly feeling sick to my stomach. Melissa shook her head, her short blonde hair disheveled by her rapid movement. "I'm telling the truth, I swear. No one else knows. I saw him do it," she insisted. I stared at her, torn. There was no way Denzel could have murdered his own mate. He was gentle and kind. "He's not who you think he is. He has succeeded in fooling everyone else. Not me though.""Why are you telling me this?" I croaked. "You deserve to know the truth before it's too late. You must keep this from Denzel. If he finds out that you know about this, he's going to get rid of the both of us." "What?" I gasped, struggling to wrap my head around what she'd just said. "If you wish to know more, you can call for me. I'll tell you everything I know. For now, I have to go." She hurried out of my room before I could stop her. Right then, my knees gave out and I sank to the ground. The door opened and Cassy walked in, a puzzled loo
DENZEL My wolf was uneasy tonight. I couldn't figure out why. Every now and then, my claws would emerge. It was unsettling. I glanced at the moon through the window of my study. It was crescent shaped tonight. This meant that the power of the moon was at it's lowest. I saw no reason why my wolf was growing edgy. 'Your majesty! You need to see this!' Keenan's voice pierced through our mind link. I leaned back on my seat, furrowing my brows. Any time he called for my attention like this, the situation was never a good one. 'What's going on? Where are you?' I asked.'A scout reported that he saw the princess heading towards the cliff' he responded. I shot to my feet, confusion stirring within me.'The cliff? Why would she do that? Why didn't he stop her?' I demanded, storming towards the door of my study. 'He reported that he tried to stop her but she subdued him. He claimed that she'd appeared as though she was in a trance.'I gritted my teeth, my hands tightening into fist
KIARA "They're coming," Denzel said, his expression impassive. The words had barely left his lips when two Lycans stepped into my line of vision. A couple more joined a few seconds later. "What is this? Werewolves in our territory?" One of them drawled, his beady eyes twinkling with amusement. "I don't think they're just any kind of werewolves. Their auras are way too powerful," a red head said, eyeing us with disdain."The woman looks so fragile. Look at her, her skin is so fair. Look at her eyes, they're so innocent. Those eyes are asking us to ravage her," another Lycan said, licking his lips in anticipation. I could feel the rage stirring up within my mate. It was only a matter of time before he would completely lose control. This would result to blood shed. More Lycans would end up swarming to the scene once the smell of blood reached them. I didn't want this to happen. "We don't want trouble. We just want to go home," I blurted out the words without thinking. They bli
KIARA "What do you mean by brides?" I asked, clutching at the fabric of my loose night dress. Estella shrugged, flipping her hair over her left shoulder."It's just as I said. Denzel has made it his habit to murder his brides on the night before their wedding. Terrible, isn't it?" She said, chuckling darkly."Tell me more," I choked out, tears blurring my vision. "Not yet. Once I'm sure that you're on my side, I'll tell you. For now, I'll leave." She winked at me and turned away from me."Wait-""I'll come to see you soon. In the meantime, you should find out as much as you can. Bye," she said. Right after this statement, she snapped her fingers and vanished into thin air alongside her bodyguard. My eyes widened when I realised that the room had also changed. I was back in my room in Denzel's palace. This meant I'd never left the room in the first place. Estella had simply created an illusion of a different room. However, I had no idea how she'd entered the palace without being n
DENZELFew hours before, By the goddess, my mate was stunning. Immense desire stirred within me as I cupped the side of her face. I wasn't one to lose all sense of reasoning. But, while I gazed into the depths of her sea green eyes, I stopped thinking. My gaze drifted to her slightly parted heart-shaped lips. Still entrapped in a daze, I leaned closer to her. When she didn't protest or pull away, my desire grew stronger until I was barely a few inches away from her lips. However, before I could kiss her, a blinding pain struck me. My vision blurred and tremors racked my body. It was an all too familiar agony, one which never failed to disrupt my day. Pulling away from Kiara, I straightened. "Take some time to rest, Kiara. You should go to the garden if you don't feel better," I said. I needed to get away from her. If I didn't, a disaster was bound to happen. So, I strode towards the door. I didn't want to alert my mate about my sudden poor health. But, when I got to the
KIARA It didn't make any sense. But, the look on his face said otherwise. "Please, believe me. It's the truth," he croaked, gazing up at me with pain in his eyes. "Let me get this straight. What you're trying to say is that you have a multi personality?" I asked. He sighed."It's similar. But, it's a lot more complicated than you think. I would... explain everything right now. However, I'm starting to feel faint" he rasped. "What do you want me to do? I-I need explanations. I don't know if I can trust your words. I don't...I don't... know who you are," I stressed."Bring... Keenan to me" he gasped, his breathing coming out in short pants. I stared at him, alarmed by the way he was shivering. His hair was matted at his temples, damp with sweat. And, he looked as though he was barely holding himself up. "Denzel -" I started to say when suddenly, his eyes rolled into the back of his head and he slumped to the ground. Is he dead? I wondered as I approached him. It was strange
KIARA "Kiara?! Please, open the door. I'm sorry about what I said earlier...Can you let me in, please?" Cassy's voice rang out as she pounded her fist against the door. She wasn't one to give in until she'd gotten what she wanted. I knew ignoring her was of no use.Picking up the fallen piece of paper, I tore it into shreds and dumped them in the waste bin. Then, I padded towards the door and opened it. "Are you alright? Wait...your eyes are puffy and bloodshot. Were you crying?" Cassy asked, her brows creased. Turning away from her, I walked towards my bed and sat on it, keeping my head lowered. "I'm fine," I mumbled.I didn't want to make her worry. If she knew about Lucas' letter, it just wouldn't sit right with her. Knowing who she was, she would probably do something rash."You're not mad at me for saying those things, are you?" Cassy suddenly asked and I shook my head."You were right. What's there to be mad about?" I said, pulling up my hair into a ponytail."You don
