Willow Baker POV

"What do you mean he won't be coming?" I demanded as I backed away from him.

My heart was pounding in my chest as I considered my situation. I should have known things wouldn't turn out that simple. The whole spiel about not lying had been a huge lie since things had turned out like this.

Of course, I wasn't completely blameless. I had been the one to assume nothing bad would happen once I reached the border and that the man would leave without any complaints.

'Let me take over. I can at least run faster than you can.'

'Not going to attempt fighting him? It's unlike you.'

'I would if I could, but I'm not stupid. Since we're so close to the barrier, it's possible the guards would help him subdue us. I know better than to attempt taking three at once.'

Winter had a good point. If we attacked the man, he could easily call for help, and the guards would come to save him. Fleeing was the right choice to make in this situation, but there were several problems with it.
