Elara's Pov

I avoided the Quad like it was cursed.

After what happened with Seraphina and the way Kael looked at me, the way he spoke up  for me, I couldn’t risk running into them again. Not when I wasn’t even sure what any of it meant.

Lila tried to drag it out of me during lunch. I told her half of the story but left out the whole alpha showdown in the hallway bit.

“So you’re saying the most wanted guy on campus stood up for you twice, and now you’re skipping lunch like the lead in a sad artsy movie?” she asked, waving her fork at me. “Girl, Seriously.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“That it meant something. Or at least that you had a moment staring into his weirdly hot eyes.”

I laughed. “His eyes aren’t weird.”

“They’re silver. That’s pretty weird. Hot, yeah, but still weird.”

I looked outside. Kael was there, on the Quad. Leaning against a tree, talking to Rowan.

And then he turned, like he knew I was watching. His eyes met mine. He didn’t look away.

My stomach did a flip. Great.

“I hate this,” I muttered.

“Do you, though?” Lila smirked.

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: Meet me behind the library, five minutes, come alone.

My heart skipped. I showed Lila.

“Nope. Nope. That’s how girls get kidnapped in movies.”

But I was already standing.

“Elara—”

“I’ll be fine.”

The walk to the back of the library felt way longer than usual. Everything felt quiet.

I expected to see Kael.

But it wasn’t him.

A girl stood by the wall, her face half-hidden. Her eyes were sharp like she already knew everything.

“You’re Elara,” she said. Not a question.

“And you are?”

“Someone who knows things.” She stepped forward. “Things you should know too.”

I didn’t answer.

“Like who you are, what you are. And why is Kael suddenly so interested?”

My chest tightened.

“You think he’s protecting you,” she said. “But he’s not. He’s hiding you.”

“Hiding me from what?”

She glanced around like she didn’t want to be overheard, then stepped closer, voice low and steady.

“From yourself.”

I stepped back, pulse quickening. “Who are you?”

She sighed like she didn’t have time for games. “I’m someone who made the mistake of trusting the wrong Alpha once. I’m not letting you do the same.”

“Kael’s not, he hasn’t done anything.”

“Yet.”

The air between us thickened. Her gaze rested heavily on me like she was trying to decide if I was worth the warning. Or maybe I was already too far gone.

“You felt it, didn’t you?” she asked. “When he looked at you, like something shifted.”

I didn’t answer because she was right. I had felt it. Like gravity tilting toward him.

She pulled something from her hoodie, a pendant. It looked old. Silver, with a cracked moon etched into it.

“You’re not just anyone, Elara. You never were, you’re one of us.”

“One of them?”

Her lips curled into something sad. “The ones they keep hidden.”

Before I could ask more, she turned and vanished around the corner, disappearing into shadows like she was never there.

And just like that, I was left alone—with a thousand questions and a heart pounding loud enough to drown them all.

******

I didn’t go straight to class.

Instead, I wandered behind the science building, hiding in the shadows like I expected that girl to appear again. My fingers played with the strap of my backpack, my heart thudding with leftover adrenaline and questions that felt too big for someone like me.

“You’re not just anyone, Elara.”

Her voice echoed louder than the campus bells.

I wasn’t ready to believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. Because if I did, everything I knew about my life… about me, would collapse like a house built on sand.

I reached the back of the building and leaned against the cold brick. Took a breath, let it burn. I tried to shake it off.

And then—

“Are you hiding from me already?”

His voice slid in like warm velvet. My spine straightened instantly.

I turned, and there he was.

Kael Draven.

No distance, no crowd, just him in a fitted black shirt that clung to every sculpted line like it had been made to worship him. His dark hair was still damp from the morning air, strands falling over his eyes too sharp and too blue for their good.

He looked like a Greek god lost in a college brochure. And for some reason, he was talking to me.

“I, ” I tried to speak, but my throat dried out like a desert. “I wasn’t hiding.”

He smirked like he didn’t believe me.

“It looked like hiding.”

He stepped closer, and something in my chest did a full somersault. His presence wasn’t just attractive—it was magnetic, like he bent the rules of space just by existing in it. The air around us pulsed.

“What do you want?” I whispered, annoyed at how small I sounded.

His smile faded, but he didn’t look away.

“I don’t know,” he said quietly. “That’s the problem.”

I swallowed.

People were passing by just a few yards away, laughing, carrying books, and living their lives. And I was here, standing in the eye of a storm I couldn’t name.

“You... don’t even know me,” I said, forcing my voice to hold steady.

Kael’s eyes didn’t flinch. “I know I’ve never felt this drawn to someone before.”

My chest tightened.

“I’m not special,” I blurted, barely keeping the shake out of my voice.

He tilted his head like he was trying to see straight through me. “You keep saying that. But you’re wrong.”

I should’ve walked away. I wanted to walk away.

Instead, I asked, “Why me?”

He didn’t answer, not with words.

Instead, he reached out and brushed a stray curl from my cheek, fingertips barely touching my skin, he was close enough for me to feel his breath.

His touch sparked something in me, a heat, a shiver I couldn’t explain.

But before I could say anything else, his eyes darkened.

“Elara,” he said slowly. “Have you noticed anything... Strange lately? Anything you can’t explain?”

My breath caught. How did he know?

  • Lunaborn at Moonridge Academy    Chapter Twelve :ELARA'S PUBLIC HUMILIATION

Veronica’s POVI strode next to Seraphine as we left the school. The dying rays of the afternoon sun made the red gown rotate around her feet while leaving a fiery trail in her path. Seraphine smiled, like she was in a dream, a victorious dream.“I feel… free,” she said with a drowsy smile, and smiled at the world. “At long last… Elara and I are free.”I snorted, eye-rolling so hard that it felt like my sockets would pop. “Free? Are you serious, Seraphine?”She swiveled to face me, pursing her lips. “What? We apologized. She accepted. We can move on.”My abrupt stop blocked her forward motion and forced her to cease walking. I folded my arms together while giving her an intense glare that could dissolve steel.“You’re so gullible sometimes,” I growled. “This is the perfect opportunity to tarnish her reputation, and you’re talking about moving on?”She paused momentarily and grasped at her dress with her fingertips. “Veronica, I just… I want Kael to see that I’m not petty… that I’m bet

ELARA POVOh Moon Goddess… What does she have planned now?Seraphine’s eyes scanned the silent room as she strutted around the room with her chin in the air. Then she smiled at me, dazzling and warm and disarmingly beautiful, but not quite reaching her eyes.“Well,” she purred, voice like honey on a knife, “I don’t want to be the bringer of another rumor today. I actually came with something… a little lighter.”She clapped her hands together dramatically. “I want to invite all of you to my birthday party tonight at the Moon Hall. It will be a full moon celebration with food, music… and of course, plenty of dancing.”Some students exchanged raised eyebrow glances as others began whispering among themselves excitedly.I watched in dismay as Seraphine’s gaze returned to me and she started walking toward me. Her heels clicked loudly with each step. She halted her steps directly before my desk and bent forward just a bit as her crimson dress swayed with every breath.“And you,” she continu

Elara’s POV“Oh, never mind, Elara,” Lila said suddenly, waving her hand in the air. She seemed to be shooing something away. Her voice was high pitched and forced. I narrowed my eyes on her. “Don’t do that, Lila. It’s only making things worse. Now just tell me what is going on?”She raised both her hands before answering and seemed to be bowing to a foe. “Tarahhhhhh!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the dorm.I jumped and stared at her, my heart skipping. “What the fuck is wrong with you? !” I shouted, frustrated but also worried. She laughed, her eyes creasing in delight. “Oh, never mind! I just wanted to make you emotional!” she teased and then she leaned in towards me and kissed me on the cheek before she skipped off like a mischievous fox.“Lila! Stop it!” I yelled after her, but I also laughed, despite being annoyed. She ran to her side of the dorm, humming to herself, like she had done something utterly innocent.I shook my head and pushed myself off the bed to stretch. “Y

Elara’s POV“Who the fuck does she think she is?” I hissed, stomping back toward the building with Kael’s book pressed to my chest. The hold that Seraphine placed on me left my wrist burning and with every step I took my anger worsened. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Professor Thorne exit the classroom with his leather satchel over his shoulder as I rounded the corner towards the lecture hall.“Wait… what?” I blinked. The hall echoed with quiet whispers and the noise of feet moving. The view from the doorway showed students picking up their textbooks and moving chairs as they conversed among themselves.“What the fuck is going on?” I frowned, turning to no one in particular. The girl that walked past me glanced at me, shrugged. “Class was over. Thorne dismissed early.” I groaned. “Ahhh, seriously?” The final students exited as I entered while I made my way to my familiar spot which was located in the second row from the front near the window. I returned to my bench seat to open

SERAPHINE POV“Why not, Seraphine?” Veronica’s voice sliced through my panic. “Would you just stand there and watch your Alpha get taken by someone else?”Something primal inside of me awoke. Wild, hot, and furious. I processed what happened too late because my legs propelled me across the courtyard and into the trees.Under the weight of my heavy steps my boots snapped loudly while crunching the ground beneath me. My focus remained solely on the gap where Kael and Elara once stood as everything else faded away.My labored breaths left me panting as I observed my environment upon arrival. Elara remained where she stood after Kael escaped but she approached me with her back facing me.Anger exploded within me. Wildfire. Fury. The bitch, I thought, the words reverberating through every nerve in my body. With no hesitation, I charged forward, yanking her wrist up into my grasp.“Hey—what’s that?” Elara said, jerking her wrist away.“What’s that, baby?” I sneered, narrowing my eyes. “You

Seraphine’s POVMy dorm room’s sheer curtains allowed the morning sunshine to enter freely.“Ahhhh, I yawned heavily after sitting up in bed and my muscles protested during the stretching motion.I stood up by exerting my entire strength while my muscles contracted and shook. I trudged over to the bathroom. As I entered the shower I felt the tile's chill pierce my feet until hot water started flowing which helped me relax.I got ready for my class. I arranged my skirt again before carrying my bag over my shoulder and exiting into the hallway. "Professor Thorne's classes always start early" I said to myself as I increased my pace. While walking through the dorm hallway I spotted several girls gathered together by the stairwell. Their necks strained as they leaned in together while their eyes stayed locked with wide attention.“Ugh.” I rolled my eyes. “Jobless girls are so annoying.” “Seraphine! Seraphine!” one of them called out. I spun around. It was Veronica, blonde ponytail bobb
