(Kathryn’s POV)

The sun shined in through the cracks of the curtain, I knew this because the brightness was shining right on me. I was so warm and didn’t want to open my eyes, I wanted to stay in bed the entire day. Suddenly there was some movement next to me. Now everything from the night before was coming back. I opened one eye and spied the man sleeping on the same pillow I was resting on.

I smiled, it had been two years since I had sex. It felt like a dream, a wonderful hot erotic dream. He was laying on his back with the blanket only covering his lower half, I slowly reached over toward him. I wanted to make sure he wasn’t a dream and I was about to wake up. Before I was even close to him he grabbed hold of my arm and pulled me close. I was now resting my head on her chest and his arms wrapped around me, holding me tight.

I let out a giggle. He smiled and kissed my forehead. “I see my mate is in a happy mood,” he reached over and squeezed one of my breasts. “Are you wantin

67 (Tyler’s POV) I knew Camerin would be in his office. And I knew that, even though he liked Kate as a person, he had plenty of doubts about her fighting a wolf. I needed him to see what Micah did the hours Micah spent watching over her at the house had turned his doubt into respect. But no one knew more about fighting a wolf while staying human than Camerin, so I had to respect his decision, whether I liked it or not. I knocked once as I walked in. He didn’t bother looking up right away, so I made my way over to the chair in front of his desk and sat down without a word. I waited while he scribbled notes and shuffled papers. Finally, Camerin glanced at me over the stack. “I take it this isn’t a social call.” “What makes you say that?” I asked, waving a hand lazily in his direction. “By all means, finish what you’re doing. Don’t let me bother you.” He grumbled under his breath but put the pen down anyway. Folding his hands on the desk, he met my eyes. “How may I help you, Alpha

66 (Kathryn’s POV) The morning sun spilled across the courtyard in streaks of gold and gray. Warriors moved in crisp lines, hauling trunks and crates to waiting SUVs. The rumble of engines starting up broke the quiet, mixing with the chatter of ranked wolves giving last-minute orders. Tyler stood beside me at the top of the steps, his arm draped protectively around my waist, fingers tapping lightly against my hip. It should’ve been comforting and it was but there was tension coiled tight in him too, barely leashed. Below, Mirella spoke with her mate, Alpha Rowan, their heads bent close in a final exchange of words too low for me to catch. Nearby, the other Lunas gathered their cloaks and bags, their sleek poise only cracking when they thought no one was watching a huff here, a tight frown there. The council’s bickering had left a taste in everyone’s mouths. “Is it always like this?” I asked, just loud enough for Tyler to hear. He huffed a laugh against my hair. “Not always. Som

65 (Kathryn’s POV) By the time I stepped into the council room behind Tyler, I felt the mask slip back over my face like a second skin. Celia had come to our room at dawn, fussing with my hair, brushing the bite mark on my throat with a touch of powder — not to hide it, but to make sure it showed just enough. A reminder to everyone exactly who I belonged to. And who I was now. Tyler’s hand was warm on my lower back as we entered. I could feel the tension radiating off him in waves but under it was something else, too. Confidence. Last night I had settled something for him. For both of us. The elders were already seated grim faces lined with suspicion and impatience. The other Alphas were here too, lounging like predators waiting to pounce. Mirella caught my eye as I moved to my chair beside Tyler’s at the head of the table. She gave me a single, subtle nod of encouragement. Or warning. Maybe both. Camerin leaned down, whispering something in Tyler’s ear before taking his place ne

64 (Kathryn’s POV) The dining hall glowed with soft candlelight and the warm hum of voices. Long tables stretched end to end, dressed in white linen and polished silver. The air carried the scent of roasted meats and fresh bread, layered with the subtle tension of too many powerful wolves forced to be civil under the same roof. I sat at Tyler’s right, as Celia instructed Luna's place, close enough that every wolf could see where my loyalty lay. He rested a hand on my knee beneath the table, his thumb tracing lazy circles that betrayed none of the simmering authority in his voice whenever he spoke. To my left sat Mirella, her posture regal and her wine untouched. Across from us, the other Alphas and their Lunas formed a tight arc of polite smiles and guarded eyes. Plates clinked. Cutlery scraped. Conversation rose and fell like the cautious flick of tails before a fight. Celia leaned behind me, pouring more wine into my glass before gliding down the line to check plates and w

63 (Kathryn’s POV) I could hear my heart pounding before I even stepped into the Luna’s lounge. Celia had chosen my outfit something elegant but strong. A deep emerald silk dress that clung in all the right places but left enough to the imagination that no wolf, male or female, would ever think I dressed for them. My mark peeked out above the neckline like a warning. Celia stood behind me, fussing with my hair until I gently batted her hands away. “You’re going to pull it out by the roots,” I muttered, earning a soft laugh. “You look powerful, Kate. They’ll see that the second you walk in,” she said. There was pride in her voice and something else, too. A flicker of protectiveness that made my chest ache. I exhaled. “They’ll see what they want to see.” Celia turned me to face her, her dark eyes steady. “Then make sure what they see is a Luna who knows her worth. And theirs, too.” I nodded, straightened my shoulders, and stepped toward the door. The lounge was all polished wood

62 (Tyler’s POV) The council hall smelled like polished wood and old secrets. A long table of dark oak cut through the middle of the room, flanked by high-backed chairs carved with the crest of my pack. The elders were already seated when I walked in, Kate at my side, Camerin a silent wall just behind us. Rowan, Malik, and Grant filed in like they owned the air itself. They didn’t bow. They didn’t need to. Alphas bowed to no one not even each other, unless blood forced it. Kate kept her chin high as we took our seats at the head of the table. She settled beside me, her hand resting on the table’s edge. I felt her thumb tap once, twice, against the wood, the only sign she was anything but carved from stone. Rowan leaned back in his chair, one arm draped lazily over the back. “Shall we begin?” Elder Corwin, the oldest and most insufferable of the five, cleared his throat. “Alpha Tyler, we thank you for gathering us today. The matter of Jaxson’s land…” “Is not up for debate,” I cu
