Ophelia

Ryker blinked once, then threw his head back and roared with such veracious laughter that the entire pizza shop went silent. He cleared his throat, his eyes darting around. I watched in awe as the Alpha of the island blushed.

I pointed at him, the smile on my face for once genuine. “That’s exactly what you get for laughing at me.”

“Tell me what happened next,” He said, his eyes sparkling. “What did your teachers do? What about the other students?”

“They were all horrified, obviously! It was dead silent too, and when I made it to the door I tried to pull myself up, but my damn foot was still asleep.” Laughter was bubbling out of me now too, trickling like a leaky faucet. “I had to nudge the door open and crawl out into the hallway. Goddess, it was mortifying.”

“That is pretty bad, but it’s got nothing on my story.” Ryker said with such assurance that my laughter faded, and I instead raised my brows at him.

“Really? Pray tell, Alpha. You don’t seem like the type to embarrass.”

OpheliaAnother one of their strange cries split the air, followed by another, and another, until they melded into a chorus of screams. I closed my eyes, but it only made it worse. They sounded just like wailing infants, their voices far higher and shriller than they had any right to be. The hairs on the back of my neck lifted.“Ryker,” I breathed, my voice trembling. “What the hell are those things?”There was a strange rumble as the red eyes began to rise in height and grow brighter, burning like hot coals. Their cries continued to build, grinding against my skull like a hacksaw. I fought the urge to clamp my hands over my ears.“No clue, but I don’t think we should stick around to find out.”“Well, we can’t just move. They’re clearly watching us.” I hissed back.Flicking my eyes upwards, an idea popped into my head as I looked at the streetlamp. It was one of those that hung from an arch, making it possible to bend. Ryker followed my line of sight and made a small sound under his b

OpheliaMy eyes fluttered open as a set of harsh whispers pierced through my consciousness. It was impossible to keep still when my soul recognized the voices.“We know exactly how they got on the island. What I want to know is why that pezzo di merda sent a flock of demons …” His words were laced with venom, ending on a growl that left the rest unintelligible.Jude’s reply was softer, but no less intense. “And we will find out.”My heart began to race. They had to be talking about my father. Again. I took a steadying breath and pushed myself up. There was a dull throb in the places where I’d been wounded by the demon birds. I glanced down and saw white bandages covering parts of my body.“Bird wounds weren’t healing right.” At the sound of Jude’s voice I looked up. My mouth went dry. He was leaning against the wall of my bedroom, his fists jammed in his pockets. An indolent smile unfurled across his face as he caught me staring. Thankfully, he didn’t comment. “There was some kind of

OpheliaI waited until I heard his bedroom door close before letting out a slow breath. Turning back to the scrying bowl, I placed a quick silencing charm over the room to ensure the conversation would be private. I wouldn’t put it past Edward to eavesdrop.Magic spilled out of me in a steady stream. I let it seep into the herbs as I hastily poured them into the water. It was my sloppiest work, but I couldn’t focus more than a few seconds at a time. My mind would drift to those birds, and to the feelings stirring in my chest, and my hands would begin to shake.Scrying was an imperfect art. Much like a vast city with a network of alleyways, there were many ways to get to one place. I merely chose the straightest, fastest one.“Dad!” I shouted and my own voice echoed back at me. The water rippled, like rain disturbing the surface of a puddle, when my father’s face appeared. He stood over me as if I were lying on the ground. It made the angle of the image seem off. As the water was distu

NovaEarlier that night…After seeing the shadow more frequently over the last two weeks, I should have never let my guard down. I had just been so tired. It had been three, going on four, nights where I’d got little to no sleep. The shadow man wasn’t just a blip in my peripheral now. He was a fixture in the corner of the room, a feeling that swept over me like a wave of vertigo. The worst part was, I couldn’t tell if what I was seeing were real or if it were due to lack of sleep. The guilt intensified until I could no longer think straight.I picked a spot the size of a quarter along my temple. The platinum strands, so similar to my mother’s, littered the carpet around my vanity. Using a comb, I swept my part to the side an inch. It would cover the damage until I made another hair replenishment potion.Dad suggested I call the therapist, which is about the full extent of his advice these days. When he leaves his office, which isn’t often, I catch glimpses of him in the hallway. Sile

NovaSunlight crept through my curtains, assaulting my eyes until I had no choice but to peel myself off the floor. My body ached horribly from the uncomfortable position. The metallic eyeliner sigil had smudged, leaving glittery streaks across my cheek and arms. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and couldn’t help but gape at the disheveled witch staring back at me.Milkshake meowed again, likely for her breakfast, reminding me that it was well past morning. Not caring what I looked like, I trudged downstairs. Dad was in the kitchen making coffee, as he did most mornings. Most people ceased to function after losing their mate. Dad didn’t, he just stopped doing everything else.Upon entering I tripped over my own two feet and caught myself on the counter. Sitting there was the plate of cookies I’d hastily made last night. White chocolate macadamia. Frustrated with the spirit’s lack of response, I had shoved one into my mouth and stormed upstairs. Two sat on the plate currently

OpheliaI forced open an eye and grumbled, “Nova’s here? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”Edwards snarky reply came a moment later. He was still annoyed from earlier. “Oh, I don’t know. It’s not as if you look like the physical manifestation of death or anything. You’ve also been incapacitated for eight hours. Besides, she’s not going anywhere. She’s been sitting on the front porch pouting since four.”Slapping my hand around until I found my cellphone, I tapped at the screen until the display popped up. The time read 6:58pm.She’s been out there for three hours?I dragged myself out of bed, my joints creaking in protest. The mirror confirmed Edwards’ assessment - my hair was a tangled mess, dark circles ringed my eyes, and my clothes were wrinkled. Still, the pain had all but faded since I’d vomited up the potion.Cautiously, I drew on my magic. Other than a bit of lingering nausea, I was able to conjure a change of clothes in minutes.Edward watched me skeptically as I stumbled out o

Ophelia“We’re insane. This is insane.” Nova fisted her hands in her hair and groaned something unintelligible about dark magic, demons, and her soul withering away. I recognized the pure hysteria in the sound. “But I need to sleep before I dismantle this house board by board and rip the slimy fucker out of the walls—”“Inhale,” I cut her off and she sucked in a ragged gasp. “Now hold it and exhale.”She remained silent.“Exhale, Nova.”Her face began to turn red.I rolled my eyes and made sure she saw it, but had to turn away as the urge to smile made my lips start twitching. Nova had always been dramatic, but Nova without her beauty sleep … whew. I could relate, and that’s the only reason why I was being nice to her about it. We were both being haunted by demons, mine were just of my own making.“Holding your breath won’t kill you, it’ll just make you pass out, which will likely bring the demon out sooner than we want.” I flicked her nose. “So, exhale.”Nova let out a long, shudderi

Ophelia“Hopefully this won’t be necessary, but I’m going to leave this paste here with you.” I told Nova, referring to the foul-smelling gunk bubbling away in a mason jar beside her window. It was my first ever spell made using dark magic, and even now I could feel the oily substance clinging to my insides. Nova kept a healthy distance away. “Only use it to draw the entrapment sigil. There’s no dark magic being used in drawing it, so you’ll be fine.” Another bubble popped, and a small cloud of noxious yellow fumes came out. We both cringed. “Just to be safe, wear gloves.”Heavily armed with all manner of potions, I flicked Nova’s lights off and headed downstairs to wait until her demon appeared.I drifted between rooms for a while, lingering in both the kitchen and the lounge for the longest. I opened the pantry, but Nova’s house was very much an ‘ingredient household’. I opted for a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, which I left on the counter, and moved on. Grabbing the mug of tea

OpheliaSand exploded in all directions. The demons moved so quickly, all wings and teeth and eyes as they shot hundreds of feet into the sky. They tore at one another, shrieking and snapping, onyx blood spilling like droplets of rain.“Kill as many demons as possible and get that fucking ring off Morningstar’s finger,” Ryker howled over the mind-link.Taloned beasts with ribs that split open like monstrous jaws, and humanoid creatures with spider-like limbs, emerged next. They were all unique in their horror, completely different from the next. Some didn’t possess physical forms, but were wisps of shadow and smoke, clouds of poison that choked the trees and drained them of life.My father appeared at my side.“This is the most crucial part.” His voice was low and urgent, threaded with childlike excitement. “Tap into your mother’s gift. Use it to fuel the command you’re going to give them so that it reaches them all. Tell them to obey my every word. Tell them, my girl.”I hesitated, th

OpheliaJude’s answering laugher swept into my heart and chased away the lingering doubts. I felt light enough to fly, and held tight to my magic in case it was insane enough to make it happen.I grabbed him first, my nails grazing the short strands of his fade. Our lips collided on a growl, and my body molded against his in an entirely indecent way, but I couldn’t have cared less. When I pulled away, it was in time to see Ryker removing the cloaking charm over his own mark. Startled gasps rang out among the crowd as some of the many rumors were proven true.Whispers sparked like wildfire.“She’s marked—”“—both of them! She has both of them!”“Of all the luck!”The whispers melted into the crash of the waves and the lilting instrumentals of the live bands as I turned from Jude and grabbed Ryker, kissing him with just as much hunger. When we broke apart, our eyes still shining, we laced hands and made our way through the stunned crowd. For the first time, I didn’t care who saw me.I w

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 193

OpheliaThe following morning I sat cross-legged on the floor near the foot of Nova’s bed, fiddling with the strap of my sandals. I still wasn’t used to wearing anything other than sneakers or the occasional flip-flop. My fashion sense, as Nova unkindly put it, still hadn’t recovered from my trip on the ‘dark side’.It was the day of the biggest event of the year, the End of Summer bash, and coincidentally, the night of the full moon.Nova stood in front of a floor-length mirror, trying on earrings while simultaneously blending eyeshadow across her lid. Her platinum hair had been curled into loose waves, falling softly around her shoulders. I eyed the periwinkle two piece she had on, the top tying just beneath her breasts, pushing them higher.“Kaelith, get out!”Nova jumped and squealed, covering herself.I didn’t bother hiding my grin.A soft knock on the door barely registered until it creaked open. Nova’s father stepped inside, carrying two glasses of strawberry lemonade. I realiz

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 192

OpheliaMy thoughts sharpened as the wind screamed past my wings, the current dragging me up and down, around and over. I felt no fear as I followed it. The pathways changed each time, and yet I knew them deep down.I followed Jude’s many forms as we circled the treetops, watching the house crumble along the mountainside. I had the distant thought that my father would be furious, but it felt unimportant this high up.Jude let out a cry I somehow knew meant to follow. I turned sharply and let the current drag me lower, coasting until we were in the clear.~We met in Ryker’s office, hidden behind layers of wards and enchantments, as if it would do any good. The lights were off. Sunlight streamed in through the windows. Rich and buttery as the sun continued to rise. I sat curled in one of the leather chairs, my legs tucked beneath me. Jude was perched like a gargoyle on Ryker’s desk behind me. He’d been stewing in quiet rage ever since I told them how my father promised me to Edward, an

OpheliaThere was no excuse, no lie that bubbled at the tip of my tongue, so I went with the truth. “I broke into the house to try and find Mom’s spirit. I know you have her, and I deserve to know why. I want to know why you didn’t tell me about her never leaving the journal.” Then, lowering my voice, I added, “And I want to know about what I saw in that hidden room.”Both Edward and his father seemed surprised by this, though his father hid it better.“I didn’t lie to you. Your mother’s spirit did vacate the journal,” he said with the sweep of his hand. “I am very curious to know where you came about this information.”It was my turn to pinch my lips shut.“Where is my mother’s spirit?”His hand lifted slowly. For a split second I thought he might actually reach for me to apologize, but instead he ran his thumb over his portal ring.“Any object, even one previously spelled, can become a prison if the witch casting the spell is strong enough.”The ring? My mother was in the ring!Godd

OpheliaKaelith’s lips pulled back into a grin as he realized what I’d only been buying time.I gave in just this once to that whisper of temptation and thought of the safety I felt in Ryker’s arms, and warmth that poured from Jude’s laughter. I thought about what they would do, would think, if I vanished tonight. If they found my bedroom cold and empty, my scent already beginning to weaken. My magic homed in on the sconces along the walls, the slight heat it could feel pulsing from the bulbs. Flame erupted from my palms as I unfurled my fingers in two messy torrents. I felt the fire’s lifeforce as this wild, untamable thing that I could shape and mold if only I could hold an image in my mind for longer than a few seconds.Kaelith exploded into a mass of shadow, while my father erected an iridescent shield with one hand. I was almost amazed, but it was blanketed by horror. All throughout his shield there were these thick, pulsing veins of dark magic. It deflected my fire effortlessly.

OpheliaSomething hot and angry settled in my chest. There was every chance Edward was lying, and that tonight was some ambush he and his father set up. That being said, I was done trusting men at their word.I turned on my heel and stalked back to Nova. There was no time for second guesses.Tonight, I was going to find out exactly what game Edward was playing. And if he were telling the truth? There would be hell to pay.~Three a.m. bled across the island in a suffocating haze of humidity and silence.I crept down the stairs like a wraith, heart hammering against my ribs with every step, even though I had checked five times now that the spell had worked. Even now I could feel it humming beneath me, stitched tightly to the fabric of my bedroom—the illusion spell I’d crafted. One that replicated the beat of my heart, the shuffle of my feet over the carpet, and even my scent. It was my strongest, most elaborate spell yet, and admittedly, inspired by Kimberly’s affinity. I didn’t let my

OpheliaThe next few days passed without much incident, which should have been a relief. It wasn’t.Somewhere in the back of my mind, tension coiled like one of Jude’s vines. It reached a tipping point, at least that’s what I thought, when an anonymous shipment was left on the porch atop one of the patio chairs. Nova helped me check it for any charms or hexes, and once we were sure it was clear, we cracked it open.Inside the package were more mate-bond blocking potions. That could mean my father had no clue we were the ones who broke into his house. Or he could simply be doing this to throw me off. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was the only parent I had, and he loved me. I refused to believe that was an act.I stared at the vials for a long time, the glass catching the light, before dumping each one down the drain.Saturday morning rolled around, and Nova pranced over to the house to drag me out of bed for surfing lessons. I was determined to shove the creeping dr

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Nova's Novella - Chapter 16

NovaThe following night, the moon was little more than a polished shard of bone hanging in an indifferent sky.The meet-up point I chose was located on one of the harder to reach trails at Shelly’s park. There were mountain paths leading all over the island that human tourists liked to frequent. This way if Kaelith chose to attack, Ophelia could tap into the ley line, and we could get away. It was better than engaging in a fight.Ophelia walked beside me, her hiking boots loud against the solid earth. She was in a mood, warring with anxiety and whatever doubts were circling her head about her father. We had just shifted back into our human forms for the final stretch.“Edward’s being seen by a private specialist. I slipped into one of his guards minds and all he knew is that Edward’s undergoing some unorthodox treatment to try and fix his missing eye.”Disgust flashed across her face, followed by a flicker of guilt that I assumed had to do with Kimberly. She still wasn’t over it, and
