Chapter 3

Author: Green Bird
When we got home, I didn't rush to confront Callum. Instead, he shamelessly tried to smooth things over. "Honey, this can't possibly be my fault, right? That teacher was out of line, but how can you blame me for her lack of judgment?"

I ignored him. It wouldn't be long before I found out if there was more to this than met the eye anyway.

"This villa feels boring after living here so long. I've arranged for it to be renovated and refreshed with a new design. In the meantime, we'll move to the apartment on Fernland Road. It's closer to the kindergarten."

For some reason, the villa gave me an eerie feeling since I'd returned. Or perhaps it was Caroline's casual, almost proprietary attitude that made me uncomfortable. But a change of style would fix it, I reassured myself.

Callum hesitated before asking, "But, honey, will you really be comfortable living there?"

"Why? Are you too attached to this villa? Or is there some other reason? If so, feel free to stay here," I replied sharply.

"No, no, I'll take care of the move right away!" he said quickly.

After all that, I spent some time playing with Eloise, trying to rebuild our bond. Though she didn't outright reject me, it was clear we couldn't return to the closeness we once had, at least not immediately.

The realization hit me hard. So I decided to take an extended leave from work to stay home and focus on her.

That evening, we snuggled on the bed together. She clutched her doll and told me with a voice full of sorrow, "Mommy, Ms. Carol said I don't have a mom. She said my mommy is dead… So, are you really my mommy?"

My heart clenched painfully as I pulled her into my arms. "Sweetie, of course, I'm your mommy. I just went on a business trip for a little while. How could I be dead? Don't listen to your teacher's nonsense."

But her confused expression didn't ease, and I silently vowed to confront Caroline about this. I mean, how could she say something so cruel to a child?

"Mommy, I really like Ms. Carol, and she really likes me too. She said she wants to be my mommy," my daughter added softly.

"And… Did you agree?" I asked carefully.

She shook her head. "I was thinking I feel like I already have a mommy, but I couldn't quite remember, so I haven't said yes yet."

Her words threw me. Was her memory failing because of the teacher's manipulation or because of some medical issue? If two months of exposure could cause this level of influence, Caroline truly had a talent—for the wrong reasons.

Suppressing my frustration, I smiled and asked, "So, sweetie, when will you give her an answer?"

"Tomorrow," she said confidently. "I'll tell her I already have a mommy, and I just want her to stay my teacher."

Hearing this, I felt slightly reassured. At least my daughter still held me in her heart. Nonetheless, I wasted no time taking her to see a doctor, but all the tests came back normal. That only deepened my confusion.

The next day, I personally took her to kindergarten. Caroline was already at the entrance, clearly waiting, though she pretended not to see me. Without a word, she grabbed my daughter's hand and started to lead her inside.

"Wait!" I called out.

She turned slightly. "Yes? Is there something you need?"

"You're taking my child without so much as a nod or a word? Is that your idea of professionalism?" I snapped.

Caroline was unfazed as she replied calmly, "Mrs. Verna, I'm a teacher. Everything I do is for the child's benefit. Classes are about to start. If I'm in a hurry to take her in, what's wrong with that?

"Our school's policy has always been clear. If a parent is overly sensitive, perhaps they should keep their child at home, tied to their side, instead of sending them here to burden the teachers and classmates."

Her arrogance was unbearable, and my face darkened with anger. Who gave her the audacity to act so condescendingly? Who gave her the right to dismiss a parent so blatantly?

Terrified that his crimes against Eloise would be exposed, Dallas hid her body by sealing it into the wall of Caroline's home. He planned to wait until it was discovered and pin the blame on Caroline. After all, dead people couldn't talk, and there would be no way to trace it back to him. However, when he found out the building was slated for demolition, he dug up her body and moved it. He hid her remains beneath the floorboards of my villa while I was hospitalized. Then, when Martha returned, he buried her alongside my daughter.…As for my assets, Dallas exploited my unstable mental state. He bribed caretakers at the psychiatric hospital to use facial recognition and fingerprints to fabricate evidence of the transfers into Callum's name. After the plane crash and the airline declaring all passengers deceased, Dallas presented a "will" that Callum had allegedly written three years earlier. In the will, Callum had pledged to donate all his assets to the school.Under the guise of

The situation was shrouded in mystery, but I knew verifying the truth wouldn't be difficult. Whoever was lurking in the shadows, toying with me and my daughter, I would make sure they pay the price.Since I couldn't reach Callum, I decided to put him aside for now. Instead, I quietly followed my daughter to her new school. What I saw with my own eyes was unsettling. The new kindergarten teacher wasn't Caroline, and there was no one named Caroline Stetson on the staff. Then why was Eloise saying Caroline was the one playing with her every day? Something didn't add up.I then returned to Elove Kindergarten and sought out the vice principal, Sasha Sutton, to ask about Caroline's background. Sasha confirmed that the school once had a teacher named Caroline Stetson, but she died in a car accident. As for my daughter's former homeroom teacher, her name was Celine Tatum. She was affectionately called "Ms. Celine" or "Ms. C" by the children.No. This just wasn't right! Then why did the wo

Natalia claimed Caroline was dead, but Caroline had been picking up and dropping off my daughter—how could she possibly be dead? She had to be lying. As for Natalia's husband insisting she had passed away, I still had my doubts. The plane crash left almost no survivors, but if she could answer my call, how could she be dead?I decided to go to Natalia's house, but when I got there, her husband refused to see me.During that time, my lawyer informed me that all the assets previously under my and Callum's names had been transferred to someone named Dallas Preston. The world seemed to spin for a moment.Dallas Preston? Wasn't that Natalia's husband? What on earth was Callum doing? Was he so infatuated with Natalia that he transferred all our assets to her husband? Not even leaving a share for his own daughter? This wretched man had completely lost his mind.Furious, I returned home, determined not to tolerate this any longer. I planned to confront Callum the moment he came back. But

When I got home, I forced myself to calmly analyze what I had just experienced. What on earth had I done to deserve seeing something so revolting? The sight of Callum and Natalia going at it made me feel like my brain had short-circuited.First, Natalia claimed she was on a business trip—so why was she at the kindergarten today? Second, what was Callum thinking?Wouldn't Caroline, younger and more aligned with his supposed preferences, make more sense? Did he have some bizarre fetish, or was he involved with both women at the same time? One betrayal was bad enough, but two? Either way, the fact remained—this man was absolutely filthy.…I already had evidence of Callum's infidelity, yet I hesitated to make a move. As if driven by some unseen force, I decided to investigate Callum's assets.Yet what I found was like a bolt of lightning on a clear day. Aside from Elove Kindergarten, every single one of my assets had been transferred into Callum's name.Rage and heartbreak surged t

I snapped. "What nonsense! God! How hard can it be to fire a morally corrupt teacher?"Natalia's tone turned serious. "Mrs. Verna, how could I make up something like this? Less than two months after she started working, she died in a car accident. The school supervisor even visited her family in the countryside to offer condolences."My mind went blank, like a thunderclap had gone off in my head. I was too stunned to speak. There had to be some kind of a mistake. I quickly called Callum to come home and discussed the matter with him.He looked exasperated. "Honey, I swear, I kept my boundaries with Ms. Carol. There's no need for this wild speculation. She's a living person—how could she possibly be dead?"And besides, she's been really good to Eloise. Isn't it inappropriate to curse her like this? Honestly, if it's such a problem, why not transfer our daughter to a different school? It'll save you from overthinking all the time and keep me from getting distracted from real work."

I was furious. I stepped forward, pulled Eloise into my arms, and handed her to Martha. Once Eloise was safely taken into the room, I slapped Caroline across the face."Is this how you educate children?" I demanded. The sharp sound of the slap had just echoed when Callum walked in. He quickly positioned himself between Caroline and me, his tone tinged with reproach. "Honey, what on earth are you doing?"Caroline's eyes filled with tears, her expression pitiful as she complained, "Mr. Verna, I was just doing my job. Your wife didn't even try to understand and just hit me. What did I do wrong?"Callum frowned as he looked at me, disapproval written all over his face. "Honey, why couldn't you just talk it out? How could you resort to physical violence? Ms. Carol is always so dedicated to the children. You'll hurt her feelings by doing this."I glared at both of them. "Dedicated? She told Eloise I'm dead. Is that what you call dedication?"Callum froze for a moment before turning to
