The chamber swallowed every sound. My words just vanished, snuffed out like a candle dropped in water. Whatever this thing was, it didn’t need a world where voices mattered anymore.

What I want, it said, is to be finished.

"Finished with what," I asked.

Being partial.

The shape in the dark moved. For a split second, I glimpsed something beneath the stillness, a ghost of what it used to be. Maybe it once had a name, a place in someone’s memory, before it erased even that.

I was not always this,

The chamber swallowed every sound. My words just vanished, snuffed out like a candle dropped in water. Whatever this thing was, it didn’t need a world where voices mattered anymore. What I want, it said, is to be finished."Finished with what," I asked.Being partial. The shape in the dark moved. For a split second, I glimpsed something beneath the stillness, a ghost of what it used to be. Maybe it once had a name, a place in someone’s memory, before it erased even that.I was not always this, it said. I had a shape once. A place. A kind, like your Hollow, like your Watchers. I don’t remember which kind. That’s the cruelty of what I am. I unmake. But I was unmade first. I don’t have the pieces left to tell you what I was, before forgetting was all I had."The first Seers," Corvin said slowly, understanding arriving even through the chamber's strange, sound-swallowing dark. "You're what they actually fought. Not a monster. A wound. Something that lost its own name so completely it star

Something was off about the capital. I felt it crawling under my skin before I could even see what it was.At first, I thought it was the buildings. But it was the people. The market in the lower district was still open, stalls lined up, coins passing from hand to hand. But nobody spoke. No laughter, no greetings, just a heavy silence that pressed down on everything. Vendors didn't call out. Customers didn't smile. Everyone just moved like ghosts, like they were stuck in a life they couldn't remember choosing."They're not afraid," Wren said, watching a woman hand bread to a child without once looking at the child's face. "That's what's wrong. They should be afraid. Something's taking pieces out of them every hour, and they're just continuing.""You can't be afraid of a gap you don't remember having," Corvin said quietly. "Fear requires knowing what you've lost. This isn't fear. This is simply what's left once fear has nothing to attach to."Lady Wexford waited at the palace gates. Fo

The second day vanished while we rode. One moment it was morning, the next, gone. Not everything disappeared. I remember Rhys gripping the reins, the sky stuck between storm and surrender, Wren humming to herself just to stay awake. But when I tried to remember crossing the river at Farrow ford that night, there was nothing. Not even a blur. Just a hole, like someone ripped a page from my life and left the rest of the story hanging."We didn't cross a ford," Serrin said, when I asked her about it. "We took the north road the whole way. There's no ford between here and the capital.""There is," Corvin said, frowning at his own certainty even as he voiced it. "I remember it. Stone pilings, half-collapsed, from the old Ashford road network.""I don't," Serrin said.Bianca still remembered everything. For now. She stuck by my side all day, repeating our names, tracing the silver crawling up my arm, reminding me who I was. Every time we stopped, she pulled out a strip of parchment and scri

"Corvin." Rhys's voice had gone flat and fast, the voice he used for orders in a fight. "Corvin, her arm."Corvin turned. His eyes landed on my hand, on the silver lines crawling up toward my elbow. He didn't even blink."Her arm is fine," he said, already turning back to his notes. "Ivy, I want to record exactly what you felt when you reached for Bianca. The texture of the resistance, if you can describe it""Corvin, look at her arm," Rhys said again, louder."I am looking at her." Corvin's voice was confused, like when someone points at an empty table and swears there's a cup sitting right there.Wren's eyes had gone distant and then sharp, her gift straining. "I can't see it," she said, quiet with real fear now. "Ivy, I can't see it either. I know something's wrong with your arm because Rhys is looking at it like it's on fire, but when I try to look myself, it just slides. Like my eyes don't want to stay on it.""It's not hiding from your sight," Serrin said slowly. She hadn't move

I didn't cry. I wish I had. It would have been easier. Instead, I stood in Sterling's war room, my sister staring at me with that polite, distant look she used to give strangers at court. And inside me, everything just went silent. Sharp. Like the world was holding its breath."Bianca," I said. "Look at my face.""I am," she said, gently. "I'm sorry. I'm usually good with faces.""You are. You're the best I've ever seen." My voice didn't shake. I don't know how. "Remember when we were nine? You cut my hair while I slept because you wanted us to match. Mother screamed for an hour. You told her I begged you to do it."Bianca's brow furrowed. Not recognition. Something worse. Like she was reaching for a memory and finding nothing there."That's a strange thing to say to a stranger," she said, but her fingers pressed to her temple, like she was trying to force the memory out."Ivy." Rhys had moved beside me. "Stop. If you push, you may only make it worse.""Or maybe better." I turned to C

Three days after the Hollow vanished, the kingdom started losing pieces of itself. No one noticed at first. That was the worst part. A baker in the capital stared at her own street and couldn't remember its name, even though she'd walked it every day for thirty years. Two of Rhys's warriors argued over a drill they both knew by heart, but neither could say who taught it to them. In Sterling, a little girl asked for her father. Her mother opened her mouth to answer, then froze, lost, and the question slipped away like it had never been asked.I only understood because of the mark burning on my skin.It woke me before dawn on the fourth day. Not warm this time, cold. A thin, silver line of ice across my palm. And with it, a gut-deep certainty: something had been holding a door shut, a door I never even knew was there. Not the passage. Something deeper. Something the Hollow had guarded so quietly, we didn't even feel its absence until now."Say the names," I told Rhys, sitting up in the
