~ TESS ~

I’m dreaming.

"I have to be dreaming," I think as I watch in horror while the red... no, yellow eyes of the beast narrow, its giant teeth coming right at me with hunger.

I scream—or try to—but there’s no sound. My arms are too heavy to lift, and my feet feel stuck to the floor. Lyra stands behind the couch, her face shifting into something animalistic.

I tear my gaze from her, focusing on the wolf that snarls and bares its teeth. Death is coming for me, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. Terror seizes my chest, each heartbeat pounding like a drumbeat of doom. The enormous black beast charges at me, its teeth sharp and long, its claws like talons.

“I warned you,” my father taunts inside my head, slurring his words. “But you didn’t listen, did you? You never do. It’s going to eat you alive, little girl. Then it’s going to gnaw on your bones.”

I close my eyes and whimper, praying for a quick death. The beast slams into me, knocking me to the floor. My back hi

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 141 – I Won’t Leave Him to Die

~ CATHERINE ~ "I said, where the hell is Cain!" I demand again, louder this time, unable to hide the edge in my voice. I’m starting to lose it. “He went to meet West,” Ronan finally answers, stepping back to give me some space. “Why would he do that?” I shoot him a look, my heartbeat climbing. “What happened?” “That’s what I’d like to know,” Ronan growls, his irises shifting to a burning shade of gold. “He was supposed to find you, claim you, and bring you back to the pack. But he never made it back.” Fear hits me so hard it knocks the breath from my lungs. “How long has he been gone?” “He left three nights ago,” Alex replies softly. “Three nights ago?” I stumble out of the bed, not caring that I’m only wearing a skimpy black T-shirt. “Why the hell did you wait so long to wake me up? And why would you let him go alone?”

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 140 — Where The Hell Is Cain?

~ CAIN ~ Alex doesn’t display fear—only pure, bristling anger. “So be it. It’s your funeral. I can’t force you to pull your head out of your arse. But know this—I won’t let you take Catherine down with you. I’ll do whatever I have to if her safety is on the line. Once you leave, you’re on your own.” He lifts a hand and points across the room. “The phone’s next to the sink just behind you. Go make your call. Good luck in the afterlife.” I turn and move to the counter, snatching the cordless from the base. Alex has the right idea, but there are a few enormous problems. Forming a new pack takes time—time Catherine and I don’t have. And I can’t just take control of the Blue Hill Pack without their consent. Not after how I left. Emotions had been high, words were said, and I know if even one wolf rejects my ascension, I’d have to fight for the position. A fractured pack is a vulnerable one. I swore I’d never be

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 139 – While She Sleeps

~ CAIN ~ The memory of ripping out the throat of my own pack member sickens me to no end. I’d been so lost in the moment I couldn’t control myself. I hadn’t understood the possessiveness, the desire, the raw need that had consumed me when I met—and fucked—Freya. I truly believed I’d found my mate. The one female meant for me. Only to learn the truth when the spell faded and the world came crashing down. Freya had been a scorned woman who ended the life of another because I’d denied her sexual advances. Her pride could only take so much. To retaliate, she hatched the perfect plan. I became her means to an end. She fucked me, bespelled me, and almost ruined my life with a fucking smile on her face. So when Catherine finally initiated the dream-pairing, I left the Blue Hill Pack and joined the Hollowbane Pack—even though it cost me the love and respect of my pack. But I can’t escape what I’ve done. There isn’t

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 138 – To The Not-So-Distant Past

~ CAIN ~ A hard no is Alex Zander’s answer as he folds his arms over his chest. “She has enemies because she left the Crimson Court, abandoned Blackthorn, and went headfirst into bounty hunting—just so she could collect vampire heads like trophies. Along the way, she took out anyone in her path—most of whom have families with long memories and deep grudges. Catherine isn’t stupid. She knows if anyone finds out what she can do, she’s a dead hybrid walking. Death by touch? Yeah, that’s not something immortals are fond of.” A sudden knock slams against the door, and I’m on my feet in an instant, a snarl rising in my throat. I didn’t survive everything to lose her now. I need to get her out of Alex’s apartment. Fast. I’ve already checked in with a few members of the Hollowbane Pack. When I let them know what’s going on, Ronan told me not to worry. The Hollowbane Pack has some safe houses where Catherine can be kept. Once she

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 137 — The Price of Survival

~ CATHERINE ~ I don’t notice the quiet at first. It creeps in like fog until the stillness wraps around me. The snarls are gone, and all I can hear is the thunder of my own heartbeat echoing inside my skull. Then Cain appears, gently prying my hand from the gaping wound on my chest. He lowers his head and inhales deeply, and I see the tight clench of his jaw and feel the rage rolling off him in waves. “It has to come out,” he says hoarsely as he looks me over, his voice raw and trembling slightly. I nod weakly. “I can’t get a grip on it.” He draws another breath, steadying himself. “Close your eyes, baby. Let me try. Please, let me try.” I obey, knowing he needed to do this to feel in control. The tips of his claws puncture my skin and I bite down hard on my tongue a desperate attempt to keep the scream locked in my throat. The sharp metallic taste of blood f

  • MARKED BY MOONLIGHT    Chapter 136 — The Promise of Death

~ CATHERINE ~ I press the numerical keypad in front of me. When the safe clicks open, I grab my shoulder holster, slide the leather straps over my arms, and reach for a pair of Berettas. I check each chamber, then the magazines, before flipping the safeties and slipping them into place. “Who are your enemies, Catherine?” I jump at the warm breath on my ear—dammit, I didn’t even hear Cain move. “I can’t be certain,” I mutter, pissed at myself for dropping my guard. “I’ve pissed off just about every creature on earth. Humans, vampires, Blackthorn, demons, witches, warlocks, ghouls, zombies, Chimera—you name it. Anyone or anything could be coming up to say hello.” His hands settle on my shoulders, firm, and he turns me around to face him. Being this close to him throws me off. Aside from Alex, no one’s worried about me like this in years. I hesitate before looking up into Cain’s face
