The memories came back in pieces and none of them were gentle about it. The weight of him. The cold of the locker. The sound of his belt. The way my body had responded before I could tell it not to and kept responding after I had already decided it should stop and the bite at the end of all of it that I had been covering with concealer since six this morning. My teammates were calling my name and the sound was reaching me from somewhere very far away because most of me was not on this ice anymore, most of me was back in that locker last night with my wrists pinned and my chest cracking open with something I did not have a name for yet and did not want one. He was watching me. Standing next to the coach with his arms crossed and his face doing almost nothing and I could not tell from this distance if he recognized me or not and I did not know which possibility was worse, that he did or that he didn't. Was that a smirk. I could not tell if that was a smirk and not knowing was somehow more unbearable than anything else because my anger needed somewhere to land and it could not land properly without knowing whether he remembered me. The hatred and the fear and the anger hit me all at the same time and they were not taking turns about it, they were all arriving together in one wave, and the mark on my neck was burning, actually burning, and I was standing completely still on the ice in the middle of a live game and my body had forgotten every single thing I had trained it to do. My teammate hit me from behind and I went down hard, my knees and my palms hitting the ice and the cold shooting straight up through my arms, and by the time I scrambled back up the opponent had already put the puck in the net and the play was dead and I was standing there with ice-burned palms and a neck that was on fire. Our team still won and I did not feel it the way I should have. We stood in front of the coach after the game waiting to hear if we would get picked or get sent home. The other new students stood in a line next to me, some of them still breathing hard, some of them looking confident, some of them looking like they already knew they had failed. My hands were shaking badly and I could not even bring myself to look at him. The coach started calling names and everyone was assigned to their teams. Some to the Arctic Wolves. Some to the Ice Vipers. Some to the lesser teams that nobody talked about. Four people were sent home. Four people gathered their bags and walked out of the arena with their heads down and their dreams crushed and I watched them go and felt sick because that could have been me. "Steele!" the coach called. I stepped forward. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat. "You played well," he said, like he did not want to compliment me but could not find a way around it. I know I played well. I did not need his compliment. I scored two goals and blocked three shots and I had played better than half the alphas on that ice and I knew it. Gosh, I was adding this man to the list of people I already hated. "And I do not know why you blacked out," he said sternly. "If you want to be in this school, you stay focused. Alphas do not lose control." I clenched my jaw so tight my teeth ached. Alphas do not lose control. That was rich coming from a man who had never been pinned against a locker by a drunk alpha who could not control his fucking rut. That fucking monster lost control on me last night. He lost control and I was the one standing here being lectured about focus. But I could not say that. I could not say anything. I just nodded and kept my face blank and prayed he would stop talking. "You have raw talent and potential," he said. "You are joining the Arctic Wolves. And you better toughen up. Your captain has every right to kick you out." I literally did not hear anything he said after that because I was fucking in. My dream team. The Arctic Wolves. The same team I had snuck into the arena to watch last night. I was going to be playing on ice. I was going to wear their jersey and stand on their bench and prove that an omega could dream big and achieve bigger. Who said an omega could not dream big? I did it. I had forged my name and buried my scent and walked into a world built to destroy me and I had done it. I had survived the screening test. I had made the team. "Your dorms will be assigned to you before the end of the day," the coach said, "but first, meet your captain." The respect he added to the title made me eager to see who the captain was. Someone strong. Someone respected. Someone who would push me to be better and expect excellence and maybe, if I was lucky, someone who would not look too close at the small alpha with the soft face and the voice that sometimes cracked. Then I saw the familiar black long hair with red tips taking his place beside the coach. "Zoren Maveth," the coach said. The universe really hated omegas. There was no other explanation for this. There was no version of a fair or neutral world in which the bastard who had marked me last night was also the captain of the team I had just bled to get onto, and yet here we were, and he was standing right there, and the mark on my neck was burning again, and I had absolutely nowhere to put any of this. What kind of cruel fate was this?š¤RAVš¤Theron's dorm hit me like stepping into a completely different universe the second he shoved the door open, warm lamplight spilling gold across walls plastered with photographs pinned up in no order whatsoever, him and his teammates mid-laugh with their arms slung over each other's shoulders, a golden retriever that had absolutely no business being on academy grounds, a lopsided trophy wedged between a stack of dog-eared comic books and an empty bag of chips he clearly hadn't bothered throwing away in days.Nothing about this room belonged to a monster. My chest actually loosened just standing in the doorway of it."Sorry for the mess." He dropped his bag and kicked a stray hoodie out of the walking path with the kind of practiced ease that told me this happened every single day, that he'd stopped apologizing for it years ago and only remembered the habit because I was standing here now. "Wasn't exactly expecting company.""It's fine." I lingered a beat too long in that doorwa
š¤RAVš¤Silence swallowed the whole rink for one full second, thick enough to feel against my skin, every player near the boards frozen mid-motion like the sound of my own voice had physically stopped time itself.Congratulations, Ravael. You just told the captain of the Arctic Wolves no, in front of his entire kingdom. Someone should really give me a medal, or maybe just a coffin, because I fully expected to be dead by morning either way.Zoren skated toward me slowly. Unhurried. The kind of pace a man only uses when he already believes the outcome has been decided in his favor, when the walk itself is meant to be part of the punishment, dragging out the dread before he even opens his mouth. My heart slammed hard against my ribs and I forced my spine straight anyway, forced my chin level with his instead of letting it drop the way it always wanted to drop whenever he got close enough to smell.Deep voice, Ravael. Alpha posture. Shoulders back, chin up, do not let this man see one sin
š¤RAVš¤The academy gates loomed dark against a sky already bleeding orange into purple by the time I dragged myself through them, my duffel bag slung heavy over one shoulder and every muscle in my body still humming with the ache of a full day spent sleeping instead of existing."Rav!"Theron's voice cut across the courtyard before I'd made it ten steps past the gate, and I turned to find him jogging toward me, his gold-tipped hair catching the last of the sunset light, his brow already pulled tight with something that looked a lot like actual worry."Where the hell have you been?" He stopped in front of me, breathing a little hard from the jog, his eyes sweeping over my face like he was cataloging every detail that had changed since he last saw me. "You missed every single class today. Coach was asking.""I needed to clear my head." I kept my voice steady, easy, the deep register slipping back into place like a coat I'd only briefly taken off."You okay?""Yeah." I held his gaze bec
š¤RAVš¤ Morning practice ended and I skated off that ice like my legs belonged to someone else. Hollowed out. Wrung completely dry from an entire night of crying into my own knees on cold aluminum bleachers with nobody around to hear a single sound I made. I never went back to the apartment. Not once. I could not make myself walk through that door and lie down on a rug four feet from the man who had pinned me to his bathroom wall and knotted me while completely out of his own mind, so I stayed on the ice instead. I stayed through the first team's warmup, hiding at the far end near the boards where nobody would notice a rookie who hadn't slept. I forced my own body through drills on legs that had absolutely nothing left to give, my thighs screaming with every stride, every check I took from an alpha twice my size landing like it was trying to finish what last night started. Hating Zoren Maveth had never once required effort. That part came easy, the way breathing came easy, autom
āļøZORENāļøThe mattress dips under her weight first, before anything else, before I even see her clearly, her knee pressing into the sheet beside my hip and then the other one, and I feel the heat of her settle over me before her hands ever touch my chest. Her palms land flat against my sternum and slide down slow, mapping muscle like she's memorizing it, and when she finally lowers herself onto me I have to grab her hips just to keep from finishing right there.God.She takes me slow, inch by inch, her whole body shuddering around the stretch of it, and the sound that comes out of her throat is high and broken and completely unguarded. I want to hear it again. I chase it, rolling my hips up into her, and she gasps and grinds down harder like her body already knows exactly what mine wants before I've asked for it.Her short hair falls forward in loose curls that brush against my jaw when she leans down, and I fist a hand into it, dragging her mouth to mine. She tastes sweet, impossibly
š¤RAVš¤What the hell just happened?I stood there with my hand still pressed flat against my cheek, the food bag hanging forgotten from my fist, staring at the empty hallway where Theron had just disappeared like he hadn't done anything at all. Like a kiss on the cheek was nothing. Like it hadn't just short-circuited every thought in my head. It's nothing, Ravael. He's just like that. Warm. Handing out affection like loose change. He probably kisses half his own team on the cheek without a second thought.I almost believed it. Almost.I let myself into the apartment because standing in an empty hallway touching my own face was not a good look for anyone, alpha or otherwise. The sitting room was dark and silent and Zoren's absence hit me like a held breath finally let go ā I'd just watched him and Rylan head out past me at the building door not twenty minutes ago, Rylan tossing a "hey rookie" over his shoulder while Zoren didn't even glance my way.Good. That meant hours, at least, be
To the readers who want the unthinkable. You crave the unforgivable. You don't want the sweet alpha who asks permission. You want the one who takes. The one who doesn't know he's falling until he's already drowning. You hunger for men who are cold to the world but burn for one person al
š¤RAVš¤ "You are Rav Steele, is that correct?" The intimidating look on the coach's face when I gave him my letter from the admin the following day made my palms sweaty. He held the paper like he was inspecting it for lies and I supposed he was because every single word on that document was forge
āļøZORENāļø "Get up from the floor you bastard." There is only one person who owns that annoying voice and I did not want to hear it right now or ever but Rylan never cared about what anyone wanted and that was the problem with him from the very beginning. I opened my eyes and the bright light mad
š¤RAVš¤ I snuck into the school just to watch the infamous Arctic Wolves and the Ice Vipers play, and the energy on the ice was charged in a way that made my fingers curl against my thighs because I could not wait to prove myself tomorrow. I already got my admission letter folded in my back pocket
