SOPHIA'S POV

Sophia hated keeping secrets.

Especially from the people she loved, but this time, she didn't know how to tell the truth.

How could she look at Noah and say:

"I agreed to marry a billionaire I barely know because I couldn't afford our mother's treatment?"

It sounded impossible.

It sounded like something that happened in movies.

Not real life.

Yet it was her reality.

---

The moment Sophia entered the hospital room, her mother's weak smile greeted her.

"You're here."

Sophia walked closer and held her mother's hand.

"Of course I am."

Her mother looked at her carefully.

"You look tired."

Sophia forced a smile.

"I just didn't sleep well."

It was not a complete lie. She had barely slept.

Her mind had been filled with Ethan Sterling.

His cold expression, his confidence, his announcement, and the contract she had signed last night

Her mother squeezed her hand gently.

"Are you okay?"

Sophia looked away.

That simple question almost broke her.

Because she wanted to say no.

She wanted to admit that she was scared.

She wanted someone else to make the decision she did

She had always been the strong one.

"I'm fine, Mom."

The lie felt heavier than the contract.

---

Outside the room, Noah was waiting.

The moment he saw her, he stood.

"How is she?"

"Stable for now," she said

He released a breath of relief.

Then he studied her face.

"Sophia."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"Something happened."

Her heart skipped.

"What makes you say that?"

"Because I know you."

He crossed his arms.

"You have that look."

"What look?"

"The look you get when you're carrying something alone."

Sophia looked down.

For a moment, she almost told him.

Almost.

But then she remembered his dream of finishing university.

She remembered their mother's condition.

She couldn't add more weight to his shoulders.

"I found a possible solution."

Noah's eyes widened.

"What solution?"

Sophia hesitated.

"I'm still working on it."

It was another half-truth.

Noah noticed.

But before he could ask more, the doctor walked toward them.

"Miss Hayes?"

Sophia turned.

"Yes?"

"Your mother's treatment arrangements have been approved."

She froze.

"What?"

The doctor smiled.

"The hospital received confirmation this morning. Everything has been taken care of."

Sophia stared at him.

"But how?"

The doctor checked the file.

"I'm not sure of the details. The payment was arranged through a private account."

Sophia already knew.

Ethan.

Her fingers tightened.

He had done it.

Even before she officially became his wife.

---

Later that evening, Sophia sat alone outside the hospital.

She stared at her phone. Ethan's number was saved.

Her thumb hovered over it.

She wanted to call.

She wanted to ask why he had done so much for her, but she didn't because she was afraid of the answer.

A voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts.

"Are you planning to stare at your phone all night?"

Sophia looked up.

A familiar smile appeared.

"Mia."

Her best friend sat beside her.

Mia looked at her closely.

"You look like someone who has a secret."

Sophia laughed nervously.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

Mia pointed at her.

"You. Secret. Definitely."

Sophia shook her head.

"I'm just tired."

Mia didn't look convinced.

"You know I'm your best friend, right?"

"I know."

"So why does it feel like you're keeping something from me?"

Sophia looked away.

The guilt hit her immediately.

Mia had always been there for her.

Through the difficult days.

Through the losses.

Through everything.

But how could she explain Ethan?

How could she explain a marriage contract?

"I'll tell you when I'm ready."

Mia studied her face.

"That serious?"

Sophia nodded.

"That serious."

Mia sighed.

"Okay. But promise me something."

"What?"

"Don't face everything alone."

Sophia smiled sadly.

"I promise."

But deep down, she knew she had already broken that promise.

---

ETHAN'S POV

Across the city, Ethan Sterling stood in his office.

The lights from the city reflected against the glass walls.

His assistant placed a folder on his desk.

"The arrangements for Mrs. Hayes' treatment have been completed."

Ethan nodded.

"And Sophia?"

"She hasn't told anyone."

His eyes lifted.

"Not even her family?"

"Not even her closest friend."

Ethan was quiet.

He didn't know why that bothered him.

Sophia was strong, independent, proud, but she was carrying a burden no one knew about , including him.

His assistant hesitated.

"Sir, may I ask something?"

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

"Why her?"

For a moment, Ethan said nothing.

Then he looked toward the city.

"I don't know yet."

---

Meanwhile, Vanessa Hartwell received the first report about Sophia Hayes.

She opened the file slowly.

A simple background.

A sick mother.

A younger brother.

A normal life.

Vanessa smiled.

"So that's your weakness."

She looked at Sophia's picture.

"You didn't marry Ethan because you wanted him."

"You needed him."

She closed the file.

And for the first time...

She believed she had found a way to win.

---

The next morning, Sophia arrived at her apartment.

A large envelope was waiting outside her door.

Her name was written on it.

She picked it up.

Inside was a newspaper.

The headline made her heart stop.

ETHAN STERLING'S MYSTERIOUS FIANCÉE REVEALED.

Below the headline was her picture.

Sophia's hands began to shake.

Someone had found out.

And now...

The whole world knew her name.

  • MARRIED TO MY RUTHLESS CEO    CHAPTER 61: CAUGHT IN BETWEEN

Daniel stared at the photograph on his screen, He had been looking at it for almost five minutes. Ethan's father stood outside Sterling Holdings, younger than Daniel remembered seeing him in the old company photographs and Adrian stood beside him. Then behind them, almost hidden by the shadow of a parked vehicle, was another man, daniel zoomed in but the image became grainy. He zoomed in again, the man's face was barely visible but something about him bothered Daniel. He had seen that face before, not in the old Sterling records, not in the security reports. Somewhere else. Daniel opened the file the young man had sent him. The payment record, then the archive access history, and then the identity attached to the temporary account used to access the system. The information was incomplete but one detail had survived, a name. Daniel read it once then again. His expression changed. “No.” He leaned closer to the screen and it displayed NOAH HAYES. Daniel sat back,"Hayes". He

  • MARRIED TO MY RUTHLESS CEO    CHAPTER 60: FRAGMENTS OF HIS MEMORY

Sophia woke to the sound of rain against the windows. For a few seconds, she remained still. Ethan's arm rested loosely around her waist, his breathing slow and steady beside her. She turned her head and looked at him. The memories of the night before returned slowly. The dinner, the laughter and the way Ethan had looked at her when they had forgotten, even for a few hours, that their lives were surrounded by secrets Just the two of them. A small smile touched her lips. Ethan stirred and his eyes opened slowly. The first thing he saw was her. “Why are you smiling?” Sophia immediately looked away, “I wasn't.” “You were.” “I was thinking.” “About me?” She looked back at him,“Maybe.” A faint smile appeared on his lips. “I'll accept that.” Sophia laughed softly,Ethan pulled her closer. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The rain continued tapping against the glass. It felt strange yet peaceful. Sophia rested her head against his chest. “I wish we could stay like this

  • MARRIED TO MY RUTHLESS CEO    CHAPTER 59: JUST FOR TONIGHT

Ethan stared at the document on the screen. For several seconds, he didn't move. Sophia stood beside him, waiting.“What is the name?”Ethan looked at her.“Richard Hale.”Sophia frowned.“Hale?”“Yes.”“Is he related to Victor?”“I don't know.”Ethan opened the document again. Richard Hale's name appeared on the ownership transfer.Below it was an old registration number and a date.Six months after Ethan's father's death.Sophia leaned closer.“Was he an employee of Sterling Holdings?”“No.”“Then how was he connected to your father?”Ethan shook his head.“That is what we need to find out.”Sophia sighed.“Then let's keep looking.”Ethan looked at her and noticed she was tired. He could see it in her face and the dark circles beneath her eyes. The way she kept rubbing her fingers together whenever she was thinking. The way she had barely eaten since the previous night.Ethan closed the laptop.Sophia stared at him.“What are you doing?”“Nothing.”She frowned.“You just closed it while

Sophia stared at the empty street through the window, many thoughts racing through her mind especially the part of her mother being watched.Someone had followed her and whoever had taken the photograph knew that Sophia and Ethan were investigating. She turned toward Ethan.“What if they come back?”Ethan looked at her.“They won't get close to her.”“You can't promise that.”“No.”His answer was quiet.“But I can make sure we're prepared if they try.”Sophia looked down at her phone.“I need to speak to my mother.”Ethan nodded.“Call her.”Sophia dialed. Her mother answered after a few rings.“Hello?”“Mum, are you okay?”There was a short pause.“Yes. Why?”Sophia looked at Ethan.“Did you notice anything strange today?”“Strange?”“Anyone following you? A strange car?”“No.”Sophia exhaled slowly.“Are you sure?”“Yes. Ethan stared at the message on his phone. WE KNOW YOU FOUND HIM. For several seconds, he said nothing. Sophia watched his face. “What does it mean?” Ethan looked at the photograph again. The man standing across the street was the same person Daniel had found in the old Sterling Holdings records. The same man who had been watching her mother. Whoever had taken the photograph knew what they had found. More importantly, they knew Ethan was investigating. “They know about us,” Ethan said. Sophia's expression tightened. “Who?” “I don't know.” She looked at the photograph. “Could it be Vanessa?” “Maybe.” “You don't sound convinced.” “Because Vanessa wanted you frightened. This feels different.” Sophia looked at him. “How?” “Whoever sent this didn't threaten you.” Ethan turned the phone toward her. “They wanted me to know they were watching.” Sophia swallowed. “That is supposed to make me feel better?” “No.” He placed the phone on the table. “It was never meant to

  • MARRIED TO MY RUTHLESS CEO    CHAPTER 56: THE FACE ON THE SCREEN

Daniel replayed the security footage for the third time. The image was not perfect. The camera was positioned high above the gate, and the man's face had been partly hidden by the darkness. But when the car moved beneath the light, his features became visible for a few seconds. Daniel paused the footage. There he was. Daniel leaned closer to the screen, he opened a file then another. The man's face appeared in several old security reports connected to Sterling Holdings. Daniel's expression changed because he had seen him before not recently but years ago. He searched the database again, this time using the vehicle's registration number. The result appeared almost immediately. Daniel stared at the screen. The car had been registered to a private security company that had once worked for Sterling Holdings. That alone would not have been enough but the company had been used during the period surrounding Ethan's father's death. Daniel picked up his phone. He called Ethan. Et
