Lila.

The sizzle of eggs hitting the pan was oddly satisfying, almost like a little victory in my morning. I was up earlier than usual, the sun barely yawning over the horizon, painting the kitchen in warm gold. I hummed softly as I flipped the eggs with one hand and balanced a slice of bread in the toaster with the other. The smell of coffee filled the air, strong and comforting.

I was in my element.

For the first time in weeks, I didn’t feel tired. Or nauseous. Or like a swollen balloon about to float away. I felt good, energized, even and I wanted to do something with that. And maybe I missed doing normal things. The bump beneath my robe was getting more obvious now, but today, I wasn’t going to let it slow me down. Not when I had the whole day planned out. Just Luca and me.

I was also feeling a little bit guilty about how I had approached things and accused him of keeping secrets from me, I wanted to make up for that. And we needed an us day, where we just lounged together all da

Lila. I was still standing by the door, trying to wrap my head around the whirlwind that was Jenny, she was in our living room acting like everything was okay between her and her son. It was like she had completely forgotten how things went the last time they saw each other, and the fact that she had lied to Luca, I was still staring at her with a million different thoughts in my head, when I heard the water shut off upstairs. Footsteps. The creak of the floorboards. He was coming. He was going to come down in a few minutes and I still was not sure I wanted him to be surprised. Maybe I should just give him a heads up that his mother was in our living room and by the look of things she planned on staying here for a while. I looked over at the couch, there she was. Jenny was now curled up on our couch like it was her own personal throne, she gave me a mischievous wink and pressed a finger to her lips. “Not a word.” she whispered like I was part of her insane surprise or whatever it

Lila. I had no idea what had gotten into me, but between Jenny dropping in on us unannounced and ruining everything I had planned out for the day, I did not have any patience left in me. I could also credit my pregnancy hormones. I sat in the cold, sterile conference room, the ticking of the wall clock louder than it had any right to be. My fingers tapped against the glass table, nails clicking in a rhythm that matched the irritation rising in my chest. I’d been here for fifteen minutes already, but I wasn’t nervous. I was angry, no furious was the word. I did not plan on having a confrontation today with my husbands ex, it was supposed to be a chill day for me to take a tour of his office headquarters, but here I was. Vanessa had made my life miserable since the very first time she laid eyes on me. Even just thinking her name made my jaw tighten with anger and fury. What a bitch! She had no idea it was me who had summoned her here. The assistant had kept it vague, just said Lu

Chapter One. The scandal Luca. The notifications on my phone were going crazy, forcing me to wake up and actually pick up my phone. I had over ten missed calls from my father. What on earth was going on? He had sent me a link which I immediately clicked on.'MAFIA BOSS LUCA DELUCA SPOTTED LEAVING HOTEL WITH A FAMOUS POLITICIAN' S WIFE'For a second, I thought I was reading wrong when the headline popped up on my phone. I quickly scrolled through different blogs and my face was all over the blogs. "Have you looked at your phone today?" my friend Tony said walking into my room with his iPad in his hand. Tony was my personal advisor and best friend, he was the one persona that knew all my secrets, the good and the bad. Our relationship dated way back to college which is where we met, freshman year. I threw my phone at him, as I quickly got up and started dressing up. "This is bad Luca, especially with us in the middle of this acquisition." "I know, I will take care of it." "How

Chapter Two. The arrangement. Lila. I sat in the sterile hospital room, the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor the only sound that filled the space between me and the frail figure of my mother, laying unconscious in the bed. My mother needed chemo, immediately, her condition was getting worse and if they didn't do anything she was going to die. Chemo needed money, alot of money. Money that I don't have. My phone buzzed on the table beside me. My flicked over to the screen, a name I didn't want to hear, especially after last night. A chill ran through me, and for a moment, I considered ignoring it. But something gnawed at me, the promise of something that could change everything. I hesitated before answering.“Lila,” Luca’s voice came through, smooth and cold, like polished stone. “I know you have seen your mother and the doctors have explained to you her condition,"He paused, as if to give me time to process everything he had just said. "You can save your mother, all you hav

Luca. The headlights slice across the driveway as I pull in. Engine off. Silence. The house seems still silent and there are no lights coming from any of the rooms in the house. Did she really sleep this early or was this just another sign she didn't want to talk to me. I sit there for a second, hands still on the wheel, like maybe if I stay still long enough, time will rewind. Like maybe I won’t have to go inside and say what I’m about to say. But that’s bullshit. I’ve run out of ways to lie to myself. And more importantly, I’ve run out of ways to lie to her.Lila deserves the truth. She always has.I get out, close the door gently, as if slamming it might break something more than the quiet. The porch light’s still on. She leaves it on for me, even when she’s mad. Especially when she’s mad.Inside, the house is warm. Smells like chamomile and something sweet, maybe the candle she lights when she’s anxious. She’s on the couch, legs curled under her, a book in her lap she’s not rea

Luca. I'm driving. Hands tight on the wheel, eyes stuck on the road, even though I’m not really seeing it. I know where I’m going home, technically, but my head’s halfway in the past, in the ache behind my ribs, in the flicker of blue hospital lights, in the cold white tiles of that goddamn ER floor. I have tried calling Lila a few times but her phone is still going straight to voice mail and it is driving me nuts. Then I think about Vanessa, and the night that changed our lives completely. The night that she had twisted and made me the villain in. It hits me like a sucker punch: the night I found out about Vanessa. I still feel like I am in that hospital every time the thought comes to me. I was out with my some of my investors when the call came in, my Phone buzzed at 1:12 AM. Unknown number. I almost didn’t answer, almost let it ring into the dark while I tried to forget the fight we’d had three days before. “Is this Luca ?” the voice said,it was the way that the voice soun
