Chapter 3: The Unholy Alliance

POV: AUDREY

The wind on the Peninsula Hotel rooftop was biting, sweeping across the Manhattan skyline like a cold razor. I wrapped my cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders, my heels clicking sharply against the polished stone as I walked toward the private glass cabana overlooking Fifth Avenue.

Xavier was already there.

He was leaning against the glass railing, a lighted cigar resting between his fingers, smoke curling up into the midnight air. He didn't turn around as I approached, but I knew he heard me.

"You're three minutes late, Audrey," Xavier said, his voice deep and calm, easily cutting through the city noise below. "I was beginning to think Carter managed to leash you after all."

"Carter doesn't leash me," I replied, stopping a few feet away. "And I didn't come here to trade insults, Xavier. Why did you send me that photograph?"

Xavier took a slow drag from his cigar, the ember glowing bright orange in the dark, before turning around to face me. The golden city light caught the sharp lines of his jaw, highlighting the cool, calculated amusement in his eyes.

"I sent you truth," Xavier said simply. "Something Carter has been starving you of for the last six months. He was at the Baccarat with Chloe. They spent two hours in a private suite finalizing an offshore holding structure that strips your family’s investment out of the cross-border merger."

My heart did a violent twist in my chest, but I kept my face entirely motionless. "My father’s legal team reviewed the merger agreements."

"Your father’s legal team reviewed the draft Carter allowed them to see," Xavier countered, taking a step toward me. "Carter is using Chloe’s father to bypass the Bridgerton board votes. Once you sign those wedding papers next week, Carter gains proxy power over your family trust. He’s not marrying you for love, Audrey. He’s marrying you to liquidate your inheritance into his expansion fund."

I stared at him, my breath hitching slightly in the cold air. I wanted to tell him he was lying. I wanted to defend the man I had spent three years building a life with. But deep down, every word Xavier spoke aligned perfectly with the coldness I had seen in Carter’s eyes just an hour ago.

"And why are you telling me this?" I asked, my voice dropping to a low, icy whisper. "You hate Carter. You hate his mother. You’ve wanted to pull Cross Enterprises out from under him since the day your father died. Why play guardian angel to me?"

Xavier let out a short, dark laugh, stepping so close I could smell the rich tobacco and expensive cologne clinging to his coat. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a strand of hair the wind had blown across my face, tucking it behind my ear with an lingering, electric touch that made my skin tingle.

"I’m no angel, Audrey," Xavier murmured, his dark eyes holding mine captive. "And I don't give away leverage for free. I’m telling you because you’re standing in the middle of a trap, and you’re the only person in New York with enough power to help me blow Carter’s world to pieces."

"I am a bride seven days away from a fifty-million-dollar wedding," I said, pulling back slightly from his touch. "If I walk away now, the scandal will ruin my family’s reputation."

"Then don't walk away," Xavier said softly.

I blinked, thrown off by his response. "What?"

"Don't cancel the wedding," Xavier leaned down, his lips hovering inches from my ear, his breath warm against the chill of the night. "Let him think he won. Let him walk up to that altar believing he’s secured your family’s fortune and Chloe’s assets all in one move. Let him taste the total victory."

"And then?" I asked, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

Xavier pulled back, a dangerous, breathtaking smirk spreading across his handsome face.

"And then, when he steps out of line, when his arrogance finally forces him to make his fatal mistake, you destroy him publicly," Xavier said, his tone dripping with lethal precision. "You don't just leave him at the altar, Audrey. You replace him. You strip him of his pride, his bride, and his company in front of every news camera in the country."

I stared at Carter’s half-brother, the sheer audacity of his words hanging between us in the cold night air. He was offering me a way out, but it wasn't an escape route, it was a war path.

"And what do you get out of this, Xavier?" I demanded, watching him carefully.

"I get Cross Enterprises," Xavier replied without a second of hesitation. "And Carter gets the public humiliation he’s deserved for five years."

"And what about me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What do I get?"

Xavier stepped closer once more, his hand rising to rest firmly against the side of my neck, his thumb brushing over my jawline. His touch was warm, commanding, and dangerously possessive.

"You get your freedom," Xavier whispered, his dark eyes burning into mine. "And a man who actually knows how to keep what’s his."

Before I could process the sudden heat rushing through my veins, Xavier’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He didn't break eye contact with me as he pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and slid it back into his jacket.

"The wedding countdown has started, Audrey," Xavier said smoothly, taking two steps back toward the elevator doors. "Carter just booked a private jet to the Hamptons for this weekend. Chloe Belmont is on the passenger manifesto."

My blood ran cold. "He told me he was spending the weekend in emergency board meetings in Midtown."

"He lied," Xavier said simply. The elevator doors slid open behind him, casting a warm golden light over his tall frame. He paused, looking back at me over his shoulder. "Seven days, Audrey. Decide if you want to be the victim in Carter’s story... or the villain in his downfall."

He stepped into the elevator, the heavy doors sliding shut and leaving me alone on the windy rooftop overlooking the vast, glittering expanse of Manhattan.

I looked down at the engagement ring on my left hand, a flawless ten-carat diamond that felt heavier than lead.

I took a deep breath, pulled the ring off my finger, and slid it into my coat pocket.

Carter thought he was playing a masterstroke of corporate strategy. He thought I was just a quiet, obedient Bridgerton heiress who would smile for the cameras while he traded my life away.

He had no idea that in seven days, I was going to burn his entire empire to the ground.

Outside, Fifth Avenue was choked with news vans, paparazzi, and hundreds of onlookers gathered to watch the wedding of the decade. My mother was putting the finishing touches on my train, her eyes glistening with rare pride. "You look magnificent, Audrey. Manhattan won't stop talking about this day for years.""No," I whispered, staring at my reflection in the full-length mirror. "They certainly won't."A sudden, sharp knock at the bridal suite door shattered the silence. Julianna hurried over and cracked it open. Carter stood in the hallway, looking immaculate in his bespoke tuxedo, though his jaw was set tight and his phone was gripped white-knuckled in his right hand."Out," Carter ordered my mother and Julianna, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I need five minutes alone with my bride."My mother frowned, but g

POV : AUDREY I spent the next three weeks pretending the photo at the St. Regis gala was a minor media blip. When reporters cornered me at Vogue’s spring preview, I laughed and called it a business misunderstanding. When my mother asked if the wedding was still on, I gave her a calm, rehearsed smile and reassured her that the Bridgerton-Cross merger was stronger than ever.I told everyone what they wanted to hear. But deep down, I was counting the red flags like landmines."You're paying more attention to that iPad than your bride, Carter."My mother’s voice broke through the silence of the private bridal suite at Bergdorf Goodman. I stood on the raised wooden pedestal in a hand-stitched Vera Wang gown, the train trailing ten feet behind me like a silver waterfall.Carter was slumped on the velvet couch across from me, his eyes glued to his phone screen, thumb scrolling rapidly."I’m monitoring the European market, Eleanor," Carter said without looking up. POV: AUDREY "If you step out of this VIP lounge to meet her, Carter, don’t bother coming back to the altar in thirty days."I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t need to. My tone was smooth as polished marble, cutting effortlessly through the low, ambient chatter filtering through the heavy oak doors of the Manhattan St. Regis ballroom. Outside, three hundred of New York’s most influential elite were sipping vintage champagne. Inside, my world was quietly cracking at the seams.Carter Cross adjusted the platinum cufflinks on his custom Tom Ford suit, a smirk tugging at the edge of his immaculate jawline. He didn't even look at me. He was looking at his own reflection in the gold-rimmed mirror above the velvet lounge sofa."Don’t be dramatic, Audrey," Carter said, his voice dripping with that effortless authority he loved to perform. "It’s Chloe Belmont. Her father controls sixty percent of the deep-water logistics infrastructure I need for the European expansion. I’m giving her ten minut
