Silence settled in the car.

The heavy sound of my breathing along with the erratic pounding of my heart echoing through the air.

I stood stiffly, not a sound left my lips—not even one gasp.

I could barely feel anything— my body grew numb as the words of the nurse repeatedly rang in my head.

“Vivian’s dead?” Ethan asked.

His words snapped me out of my trance state.

I turned to him, seeing his brows furrowed in a frown as he watched me.

“She’s not dead,” I whispered, my voice low, as my chest burnt painfully.

“She’s not dead.

My mum is not dead, I just saw her a while ago.”

My entire body trembled the more I spoke, yet I was not backing down.

Disbelief roared its veins in my brain.

I refused to believe that the woman I had just seen a few hours ago was dead.

My gaze burnt into Ethan, and for some reason, my eyes hurt, but not with tears.

I could barely feel that, because everything was numb.

“Take me to see her, Ethan,” I pressed, my pupils dilated as I stared at him.

My laughter rang out loudly. So hard that I could feel tears dripping down my cheeks as I wiped them away all the while trying to tone down my laughter.I took in the seriousness on his face, the fear behind his eyes along with the way his hands trembled. My lips curled, still tugged up in a smile at his funny joke.“I never knew you told jokes this early in the morning, officer.I don’t have time for talks like this.Neither do I find them funny. So bring my wife out from whatever cell you locked her up, else I’ll burn this entire place to the ground,” I growled. And I meant every fucking word I said.I could see the way he shivered at my words. His hands landed harshly on the table and he stood up to face me.“Your wife committed a grave offense, young master. She escaped from prison. And was involved in a ghastly car accident. Her body could not be recovered unfortunately because she burned to death in the car.But we had traces of blood on the scene. And when we conducted a DNA te

“What?” I whispered, my face snapping to hers and my body still in shock.“Arre…arrested?” The words were barely audible for me to utter.Jennifer looked at me, her eyes brimming with sadness as she muttered. “Ethan, it seems you have forgotten what happened last night,” she said softly, shaking her head.I could see the emotions which twisted across her face, and the tension in her stiff shoulders as she walked towards where I stood at the door.“Last night, Leah killed your grandfather, Ethan. You were delirious, and out of your mind. You couldn’t even think properly, so I did what I had to,” she paused, breathing deeply. And my eyes never moved away from her lips, taking in everything she said.“I called the cops, Ethan. And they arrested her immediately.I wa...I was so scared because how could she kill the old master, he was always good to her.Because, how could she kill the man who raised and treated me as his own.I’m sorry, but I couldn’t let go of that,” she paused, and I c

My mind travelled back to that day.I could feel the cold metal of the rails seeping into my skin as the memories poured in.The soft sounds of female crying made the pounding of my head harsher and I groaned. But then, my ears perked up at the heaviness of the cry.My breathing seized, and my eyes widened when I realized what it was.Was that Leah? Was she hurt? I thought as I jerked up suddenly from the bed completely forgetting my pain. But then, I paused when my brain took note of the rhythm of the female's breathing, along with the sound of her cries. It was different from Leah’s.I was fucked up—I knew that from the day Leah came into my life. And now, I knew clearly that Leah’s sniffs when she cried were not as hard as this woman’s.But then, if it’s not Leah, then who was…My body froze when I took note of the figure curled at the far edge of the bed.I could see the bright red marks littered on her skin alongside hickeys and hand marks. Those were not abusive marks. No, they

I stood still, not moving an inch as fear froze me.“Daddy!” a little girl’s voice screamed snapping me out of my frozen state.“Why were you peeping through the study door, princess? What's in there?” Ethan asked, and I could feel his feet drawing closer. My eyes widened in panic, as I returned the file, shutting the cupboard quickly. But I knew, no matter how fast I was—I won’t be able to make it in time. The door was opened, and Ethan was right outside.‘Oh Lord, I’m finished.I’m going to get caught,’ I whispered to myself knowing my entire plan would be ruined if Ethan catches me here today.“No, daddy, wait!” The childish voice shouted, and I could hear Ethan's steps pausing.I knew she stood right outside the door.I could clearly see her pink gown from where I stood.Which only meant she could see me too.Was she going to out me?I could see her hands twisting around the edge of her gown nervously as she spoke up.“Actually, I’m starving.Let’s go eat,” she whined.“Okay, just

Jennifer’s drowsy eyes stared at me.Her brows were stained with blood, and the emotion on her face was hard to decipher.‘I hope she doesn’t see through my act,’ I mumbled to myself. Smiling sadly at her, I bent to her level helping her up.Her blood clung to me staining my clothes.I could feel cameras taking pictures of us, while muttering under their breaths of how much of a saint I was, helping the woman who wished me death. With the help of my driver, I took her in my car.I turned to Jennifer who was already drowsy on the chair as I feigned confusion.“Where is your house Mrs Blackwood?I’ll drop you off, you don’t look so good,” I said innocently. She opened her eyes, calling the location of the Blackwoods mansion.A place I already had engraved at the back of my mind.I forced a smile, turning to my driver, giving him the location.I helped Jennifer in the house, playing the perfect role of a good samaritan.I unwrapped the sleeping pills I had brought with me earlier, putti

Jennifer trembled, her panic stricken face looking at the women gathered before her as she struggled to get her hair away from the woman’s strong grip.“No, don't you dare.My husband is Ethan Blackwood, he would…”“PAA!” The sound of a sharp slap echoed through the room, as one of the women’s hands landed harshly on her face.My lips parted in surprise at the flaring red mark on Jennifer’s cheeks as that delicious feeling of seeing her suffer filled me.“You still have the nerve to talk, you evil witch.I can only just imagine how long you have been deceiving the world to be an angel when you have been hiding your true and dark side all these years,” she hissed, spitting on Jennifer’s face.I gasped this time, my eyes wide with amusement seeing the spit dribble down Jennifer’s lashes to her cheeks.‘I really have outdone myself this time,’ I thought smugly.I stood still, watching keenly as the women dragged her outside the restaurant. One of them moved to grab a stick, hauling it to
