BROOKS

I don’t know why I said yes to riding with them.

Maybe it was Venita’s chirpy tone or the way she’d linked her arm through mine like we were girlfriends about to hit the mall instead of a four-hour drive to a construction site.

But now, here I was, in the passenger seat beside the driver, with Venita and Stephan sitting in the back.

Silence stretched, save for the hum of the engine and Venita’s occasional, passive-aggressive remarks.

“I hope there aren’t too many mosquitoes out here,” she said, swiping invisible lint from her pristine white linen pants. “Ugh. Coastal towns are always so… muggy.”

I nodded slightly, pressing my lips together and pretending to be fascinated by the view outside my window.

Trees. Bushes. Endless sky. Definitely nothing biting.

Beside her, Stephan said nothing. Not a single word the entire ride.

He just scrolled through his phone like he hadn’t spent the entire week ignoring me in meetings and then finding excuses to correct everything I said after

  • MATED TO HER ALPHA STEPBROTHERS   44: She Lives in My Head

STEPHANVenita had turned off all the bright lights in the room before entering the bathroom almost an hour ago. The glow of my laptop screen was the only bright light in the room. Emails, spreadsheets, timelines—all blurred together. My fingers hovered over the keys, but I hadn’t typed anything for the last ten minutes. All I could see was him—that damn engineer—smirking like he had a shot, like she was available. And Brooks… smiling. Laughing. Tossing her hair like she didn’t know exactly what that did to people. What it did to me. I clenched my jaw.She had every right to be polite. She was working. Networking, even. But that hadn’t been just polite. And it pissed me off more than it should have. She was under my skin, and I hated it. She didn’t belong to me. I had no claim. And yet the idea of someone else touching her—I slammed the lid of the laptop shut and pushed back from the desk.“Fuck.”The chair scraped against the tiled floor as I stood, pacing once. Twice.I barely he

  • MATED TO HER ALPHA STEPBROTHERS   42: You're Mine

BROOKSI closed the door behind me and locked it.“What are you doing here, Heath?”He didn’t flinch. Just tilted his head at me like I was being unreasonable for even asking.“Can’t a man visit his favorite stepsister?”. “I’m your only stepsister,” I gave him a flat look “And let’s not pretend this… thing between us is anywhere near a normal sibling relationship.”“So cold tonight, sweetheart,” He pouted, all faux-innocent as he sat up straighter. “What happened to that soft little voice you used when I was bouncing you on my cock?”My breath hitched.I hated that it hitched.I hated that I let it show.“Heath,” I warned.“Stop pretending like you don’t always look forward to it,” He leaned forward, forearms on his thighs, voice low and lazy. “You like us this way, don’t you?”There it was.The thing he always did, saying just enough to make my body remember every wicked thing he’d ever done to me… while my brain screamed at me to stop it. Run. Fight. But I didn’t run.I didn’t figh

  • MATED TO HER ALPHA STEPBROTHERS   41: Step-sis

BROOKS“Oh my God, Zadie!” Veiny suddenly squealed as soon as her eyes landed on us, lighting up like she’d just found a long-lost puppy. There’s that weird pet name again.Zadie.Before I could even blink, she was skipping— yes, actually skipping— toward us, tugging a very stiff, very silent Stephan behind her like he weighed nothing. My eyes flicked to Stephan. His face was carved from stone. Zero expression. Just ice. When his eyes flickered to mine, I looked away. Venita reached us, throwing her arms wide like she might actually launch herself at Zade. “Look at you! I haven’t seen you in a minute,” She gave a dramatic pout. “I missed you.”Zade’s smile was slow to form. And fake. So fake, it hurt to look at.“Hey, V,” he said, voice light, eyes not.Venita clutched his arm, ignoring the way he subtly tensed beneath her touch. “I was just telling Steph we should all do a family dinner again. It’s been so long! Right?”She looked up at him like he was supposed to agree.Stephan d

BROOKSThe bass was already thumping in my chest before I even reached the building.Outside, the line wrapped around the block—people laughing, dressed in glitter and leather, energy buzzing. I felt both underdressed and overdressed somehow. Then I saw the line.Crap.Zade hadn’t given me a ticket. He’d just said, “Come.”I was about to text him something dramatic like “Should I seduce security or…” when someone said, “Miss Brooks?”I looked up.A tall guy in all black, tight tee, earpiece, sunglasses at night—definitely not just another concertgoer—was watching me.“Uh… yeah?”“Zade said to bring you in.”Oh.I followed him through a side door, past the crowd and ticket scanners. A girl in fishnets gave me a death glare as I passed.Inside, it was louder. Dimmer. Cooler. He brought me up through a side corridor and into a sleek, roped-off section above the crowd, VIP, I guessed. The view was perfect, just as the lights dipped and the stage lit up.And then—The band came out.Or ra

BROOKSI told myself to calm down as I raised my hand and knocked.Hopefully, I was wrong and this was just a meeting. Just work.Just Stephan.“Come in,” came his gruff voice from behind the door.I stepped inside, shutting the door quietly behind me. He didn’t look up right away, just flipped a page in the document before him, his brow tight with focus.I stood there, clutching the folder Betty had given me until he finally looked up.“Status update. The resort,” he said, his voice clipped. “Where are we?”I cleared my throat, walking forward and placing the file gently on his desk before beginning.“We’ve locked in the proposed locations, and I’ve been coordinating with Venita to narrow down the final three,” I said, and he looked on. “She’s already reached out to the landscape firm you suggested, and she wants us to prepare concept pitches for the zoning committee by next Tuesday.”He nodded once.“Logistics?”“I’ve drafted a preliminary timetable. If construction kicks off in Q4
