A Place Among Enemies

Lyra didn't make it far before the tears came.

She stopped beneath a tree behind the packhouse, pressing her palms against her eyes. She had promised herself she wouldn't cry in front of Kael, and she intended to keep that promise.

But the mate bond was cruel. Even with him out of sight, she could feel the pull toward him, reminding her that the one person meant to understand her had rejected her.

“Get yourself together,” she whispered.

She wiped her face and straightened her clothes. She had survived Garrick's rejection. She could survive Kael's, too.

“Lyra?”

She turned to find Sera approaching with a small bowl.

“You haven't eaten,” the healer said. “Come inside.”

“I'm not hungry.”

“That wasn't a question.”

Despite herself, Lyra almost smiled. She followed Sera into a room beside the infirmary, where stew and bread waited on a table.

“Why are you helping me?” Lyra asked.

“Because you're hurt, hungry, and far from home. I don't need another reason.”

The simple answer caught Lyra off guard.

She ate quietly while Sera prepared fresh bandages.

“Will he send me away?”

“Alpha Kael makes his own decisions. I don't pretend to understand all of them.”

“Neither do I.”

Sera studied her. “People here respect strength and loyalty. If you stay, you'll be watched closely because of where you came from.”

“I didn't ask to be born into Ashen Moon.”

“No. But some people won't care about that distinction.”

Lyra looked down at her bowl. Leaving her old pack hadn't freed her from its judgment. She had only entered a place where people could judge her for the same thing.

“Thank you for the food,” she said.

“Rest for now. We'll deal with tomorrow when it comes.”

Across the packhouse, Kael stood in his office, staring at the report on his desk.

He should have been thinking about the alliance negotiations scheduled for the following week. Instead, his thoughts kept returning to Lyra Vale.

His mate.

Accepting an Ashen Moon mate could destroy the political alliance he had spent years preparing. The proposed marriage would strengthen their borders and protect families living near disputed lands. Some of his warriors would never accept a woman from their enemy pack standing beside him.

He couldn't afford to let instinct decide the future of thousands of wolves.

A knock interrupted him.

“Come in.”

Darius entered, carrying another report. As Kael's trusted adviser, he was one of the few people who could speak freely with him.

“I heard an Ashen Moon wolf was brought in this morning.”

“Her name is Lyra Vale.”

“Is she a spy?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why keep her here?”

“She's injured. She'll remain until the healer says she's fit to travel.”

“And after that?”

“I'll decide.”

Darius placed the report on the desk.

“With the alliance negotiations approaching, we cannot afford distractions. If the neighbouring Alpha hears you've brought an Ashen Moon woman into Nightfang, he'll question your commitment.”

Kael's gaze hardened. “I am aware of that.”

“Of course. I'm only reminding you that one careless decision could undo years of work.”

“Then help me ensure it doesn't.”

Darius bowed his head and left.

Kael returned to the report, but the words blurred. He remembered Lyra's face when he'd told her he couldn't accept her. She hadn't begged or asked him to reconsider. She had simply walked away.

For reasons he didn't want to examine, that bothered him more than anger would have.

The following morning, Lyra woke to voices outside the infirmary. Her shoulder still hurt, but she could move it. She dressed and secured the small knife Mara had given her beneath her clothing.

Two warriors waited outside.

“Alpha Kael wants to see you.”

“Why?”

“We weren't told.”

They led her to the training grounds, where Kael stood watching warriors spar. He dismissed them and turned to her.

“Your wound needs another day or two to heal. After that, you'll be escorted to the eastern road.”

Lyra stared at him.

“And if I refuse to leave?”

“You're free to make your own decisions, but you cannot remain here indefinitely without a purpose.”

She glanced at the warriors training nearby.

“Then give me one.”

Kael narrowed his eyes. “What?”

“I'm not asking you to accept me as your mate. I'm asking for a chance to earn my keep until I'm strong enough to leave.”

“You expect me to trust an Ashen Moon wolf?”

“No. I expect you to judge me by what I do, not where I came from.”

For a moment, Kael said nothing.

“If you want to prove yourself, learn to defend yourself. You clearly lack the skills to survive alone.”

“Fine.”

“You'll follow the training master's instructions, stay out of restricted areas, and avoid interfering in pack matters. If you fail, you leave.”

Lyra lifted her chin.

“Agreed.”

She held out her hand. Kael hesitated before accepting the handshake.

The instant their skin touched, the mate bond flared between them.

Lyra's breath caught. Kael's fingers tightened around hers before he released her abruptly.

Neither spoke.

But this time, Lyra saw something in his eyes that hadn't been there before.

Fear.

Not of her, but of what the bond might cost him.

Lyra stepped back.

“Don't worry, Alpha. I intend to earn my place here on my own terms.”

She turned toward the training grounds.

For the first time since crossing the border, she had a reason to stay.

And Kael Draven was beginning to realise that sending her away might not be as easy as he had planned.

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Answer He Couldn't Give

The silver clasp lay on Kael's desk. He had been staring at it for several minutes, turning it between his fingers as though the small piece of metal might reveal the identity of the person who had left it outside Ronan's door. It had belonged to his Beta three winters ago. Someone had kept it all this time and that person knew exactly what it meant. "Double the guards around Ronan's quarters," Kael ordered. Ronan stood beside the window, his expression hard. "You cannot keep me locked away because someone wants me frightened." "I'm not protecting you from fear. I'm protecting you from whoever wants you dead." "And what happens when they decide you're the next target?" Kael placed the clasp on the desk. "Then they'll discover why they should have stayed hidden." Lyra watched the exchange quietly. Ronan looked exhausted, but beneath it was something else. Guilt, perhaps. The kind that came from carrying a truth for too long. Before she could speak, a knock sounde

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE PRICE OF AN ALLIANCE

“Ronan?”Kael's voice was dangerously quiet.Mara nodded, her fingers gripping the edge of the bed.“Varek wasn't the one they needed to silence. He was only a distraction. Ronan knows what happened three winters ago, and someone is afraid he might finally tell the whole truth.”Ronan's expression hardened.“I've already told you everything I know.”“Perhaps,” Mara replied. “But have you told them everything you remember?”The Beta stared at her.Kael stepped between them.“Enough. We will not solve this by accusing one another. Until we understand what happened, nobody moves alone.”He turned towards the guards.“Double the security around the Beta's quarters. No one enters without my permission.”Ronan looked displeased.“I can protect myself.”“This isn't a discussion.”Before anyone could respond, a messenger appeared at the infirmary entrance.“Alpha, a letter has arrived from the neighbouring territory. It requires your immediate attention.”Kael took the sealed envelope. The cr

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Lyra barely waited for Kael's permission before heading towards the western gate.“Lyra, wait.”She stopped when Kael caught up with her.“You don't know who is waiting outside,” he said.“The guard said her name is Mara.”“And anyone could use that name.”Lyra swallowed her impatience. He was right. The last thing they needed was to walk into another trap.Kael signalled to the guards.“Open the smaller gate. Keep the main entrance secured.”Two warriors moved into position while Ronan approached from behind.“I'll come with you,” he said.Together, they stepped outside.A woman stood several feet from the entrance, her dark cloak dusty from the journey. Her hair was partly covered, and one sleeve had been torn near the elbow. But Lyra recognised her immediately.“Mara?”The woman lifted her head.“Lyra.”Lyra rushed towards her, then stopped just before embracing her.“What happened? We were told you were no longer in Ashen Moon.”Mara glanced at Kael and the warriors.“Perhaps we s

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME THEY BURIED

Kael stood over the remaining documents, reading the same line for the third time. The correspondence box had vanished, and whoever had taken it had known exactly what they wanted. But one letter remained. He held it beneath the desk lamp, examining the faded handwriting. The paper was old. There was no seal, only a name written at the bottom. Alpha Garrick. Kael's expression hardened. “Garrick?” Lyra, standing opposite him, looked up. “Ashen Moon's Alpha?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Then he was the one who warned your father?” “That is what this letter suggests.” Kael placed the document on the desk. The letter was dated three winters ago, two days before the northern patrol was ambushed. Its message was brief. Garrick had warned Kael's father that someone was leaking patrol information and advised him to postpone the northern assignment. But the final paragraph was what caught Lyra's attention. I cannot trust the people around me. If anything happens to my messenger

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    BEFORE THEY CAN HIDE THE TRUTH

Darius read the message twice. They found the warning. Move before they do.He held the paper over the flame of his desk candle. The edges caught fire, curling inward until the words disappeared beneath the smoke. For several seconds, he watched the ashes fall. Then he rang the small bell beside his desk.A guard entered.“Send word to Captain Varek. I want to see him tonight.”The guard hesitated. “Captain Varek is being held under watch, sir.”“Then find someone who can deliver a message without attracting attention.”“Yes, sir.”“And make sure nobody knows you came here.”The guard bowed and left.Darius leaned back in his chair.Kael had found the letter. That was unfortunate, but not yet disastrous. The document was old, and an old warning did not prove who had betrayed the patrol. What mattered was ensuring they never found the rest.Lyra was still in Kael's office when Ronan arrived.“I've arranged for a messenger to travel to Ashen Moon,” he said. “He can deliver a letter to M

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME ON THE NOTE

Lyra read the note again.Ronan was not the only one who knew. Ask Kael what his father was hiding.Beneath the words was a single name.Mara.She folded the paper carefully, but her fingers remained tense.Mara had helped her when everyone else had turned away. She had treated her wounds, given her food and a cloak, and risked trouble by helping her cross the border. Why would she send a message like this now?And how had it reached Nightfang territory?“You're still holding it.”Kael's voice came from the doorway.Lyra looked up. He had entered without her noticing, his expression fixed on the paper in her hand.“I was going to find you.”He approached. “What happened?”She handed him the note. His eyes moved across the words. When he reached the signature, his expression changed.“Mara?”“You know her?”“Not personally. But I know she was one of Ashen Moon's healers.”“She helped me before I crossed the border.”Kael looked at her. “Could she have written this?”“I don't know.”“Wo
