Kael's POV — First Person

I read the message for the third time.

Elias Thorne is alive.

If you want to know where he is, come alone.

The words were simple, but their implications were dangerous.

Someone knew we were searching for Elias. Someone also knew Lyra had become involved, and whoever sent the message wanted her specifically.

I folded the paper.

"You're not going," I said.

Lyra stood opposite my desk, her expression stubborn.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I'm respon

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Man Who Came Before

The healer had been working on Orin for the better part of an hour by the time Lyra reached the infirmary.Kael was standing outside the room, talking in low tones to two guards. Even from the end of the corridor she could see how tightly he was holding himself."Is he alive?"He turned. "Yes. The healer says he has a chance. The blow to his head was bad.""Did anyone see who did it?""No. He was found outside his office."Lyra looked at the shut door. "Was anything taken?""We haven't finished checking.""Then maybe we should."Kael considered her for a moment, then nodded to the guards. "Go with her. Nobody gets into the records office without my permission."The council wing had changed since the morning. Kael's orders were already in force, with guards posted at either end of the corridor and every exit watched. Orin's office looked as though a storm had passed through it. A chair lay on its side, papers had been flung across the floor, and one drawer had been dragged clean out of

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Ring That Went Missing

The original submission record was locked in Kael's private study, and he had read it so many times that morning he could have recited it from memory. The more he looked, the less he trusted it. Captain Merek Voss's signature sat at the bottom of the page, Darius's acknowledgement just beside it, and both looked genuine. Neither told him what he actually wanted to know. Orin's story had left a different question lodged in his head, and it wouldn't budge.Who had been wearing his father's ring?He pulled open the drawer under his desk and took out a small iron key."Find anything?"Lyra was in the doorway with a cup of tea in each hand. He hadn't heard her come up the stairs."Not yet.""You've been in here since dawn.""I have my reasons.""I know. You're trying to untangle three years of lies before breakfast." She crossed the room and held out one of the cups. He took it."Do you always have an answer ready?""Only when people insist on making things difficult."He almost smiled. Ly

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Hand Behind the Signature

Lyra read the note for the fourth time. The man who signed the report is not the man who wrote it. She had hardly slept. Every time she shut her eyes she saw it again: the faint words under the journal entry, the stranger slipping out into the corridor, the torches bending in the draught he left behind. Someone had carried a false warning in the name of Kael's father. Someone else had signed a report to hide what happened. But who? Footsteps were coming down the passage. She folded the note small and pushed it up her sleeve. Kael appeared in the doorway. "You're getting very fond of this room." "I could say the same about you." His eyes went to the journal on the table. "Did you find something?" She hesitated, then took the note out and handed it over. He read it once. Then again, slower, and she saw the line between his brows deepen. "Where did this come from?" "Someone was in here last night. They left it and were gone before I could get to the door." "And you didn't cal

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    What the Signal Post Hid

The scouts got back a little before sunset. Lyra was in the council chamber when the guards called out their names. Kael stood at the long table with a pile of reports from the eastern border, frowning at them like they'd personally offended him. Ronan had taken the chair nearest the fire, one arm held tight against the bandage under his shirt. "Let them in," Kael said. The two scouts came in smelling of cold air and horse. Between them they carried a small wooden case. "Under the floorboards at the old signal post," the first one said. "Somebody's been there recently. They'd tried to hide the hatch, but the new boards stood out. Everything else in that place is rotten, and those weren't." Kael eyed the case. "Was anyone there?" "No, Alpha. But there were fresh tracks leading away." "How many?" Lyra asked. "Two sets. One in ordinary boots. The other was heavier. A guard's, maybe." Ronan looked over at Kael, and Kael didn't look back. "Open it." The scout set the case on the

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Mark on the Cloth

The message sat on the table between Lyra and Kael, and neither of them had touched it in a while. The man you seek knows who delivered the warning to your father. But he will not speak while the old traitor still holds power.Under the words someone had drawn a small mark, a crescent with three short strokes through it. Lyra had read the message four times and the mark more often than that. She had seen it before. The scouts had pulled a scrap of cloth out of the brush near the northern ridge, and it was lying a hand's width from the paper now, stained brown at one corner, carrying the very same crescent."Have you seen this before?" she asked.Kael was at the window with his arms crossed, looking at nothing in particular out in the yard. "Not lately.""That's not what I asked."He turned his head. It took him a moment. "It belonged to the old northern patrol.""Then why is it on a rag from the shelter?""That's what we're trying to work out.""We could try working out all of it at o

She had a habit of challenging every order I gave her, but this was different. I couldn't risk losing her because someone had discovered how to use her curiosity against her. "Whoever sent this knows what happened to Ronan," I said. "They may be connected to the attack." "Which is exactly why we should investigate." "Not by walking into a trap." She crossed her arms. "Then send someo
