Darius was waiting in a small room beside the council chamber.

Lyra stopped at the doorway. Two guards stood behind her, their expressions giving nothing away.

“You sent for me?”

“Come in.”

She stepped inside but remained standing.

Darius gestured towards the chair opposite him. “Sit.”

“Why do you want to see me?”

His eyes narrowed slightly. “You prefer questions before instructions?”

“I prefer knowing why I’m being summoned.”

For a moment, he simply studied her. Then he leaned back in his chair.

“You have been in Nightfang for only a few days, yet our Alpha has allowed you to remain within the pack.”

“He gave me a chance to earn my keep.”

“And you intend to take advantage of that chance?”

Lyra frowned. “I don't understand.”

“Do not pretend to misunderstand me. You came from Ashen Moon. Your former Alpha has every reason to dislike Nightfang. Why should we believe you have no connection to whatever he is planning?”

“I was expelled.”

“An answer you expect us to accept without question.”

“What would you like me to say? That I was secretly sent here by Garrick? That I crossed the border with a mission?” Her voice remained steady. “Neither is true.”

Darius tapped a finger against the table.

“People lie when they have something to hide.”

“And people accuse when they have nothing to prove.”

The silence that followed was uncomfortable.

Lyra immediately wondered whether she had gone too far. She was still a stranger here, and Darius was no ordinary pack member. His position gave his words weight.

But she refused to apologise for answering honestly.

“You are very confident for someone who has no standing in this pack,” he said.

“I am not asking for a position. I am asking to be allowed to work for the food and shelter I receive.”

“Your training gives you access to our warriors.”

“Under Master Toren's supervision.”

“You observe them closely.”

“Because I am trying to learn.”

Darius rose and walked towards the window. Beyond it, the training grounds were slowly emptying.

“Let me make something clear, Lyra. The Alpha may have permitted you to stay, but that does not mean the rest of us trust you.”

“I never assumed you did.”

He turned.

“If I discover that you are hiding anything from this pack, your arrangement with the Alpha will not protect you.”

Lyra held his gaze, though her stomach tightened.

“I have nothing to hide.”

“Everyone says that.”

“Then perhaps you should look for something other than words.”

For the first time, Darius's expression changed. It was only a brief tightening around his eyes, but she noticed it.

He returned to his chair.

“You may go.”

Lyra turned towards the door.

“One more thing,” he added.

She paused.

“Do not approach the western border without permission. And stay away from the council chamber.”

“I was never told I had any reason to enter it.”

“Now you know.”

She left without another word.

Outside, the guards escorted her back towards the main compound. Lyra kept her face composed, but her thoughts were racing.

Darius had not asked questions because he wanted answers. He had already decided she was suspicious. He was searching for a reason to send her away.

And if he found one, Kael might not stop him.

Kael was reviewing another set of reports when Darius entered his office.

“She is defensive,” Darius announced.

Kael continued reading. “Most people are when questioned like criminals.”

“I asked her simple questions.”

“And?”

“She denied having any connection to Garrick's plans. She also challenged my authority.”

Kael put down the report.

“Did she threaten you?”

“No.”

“Did she admit to spying?”

“Of course not.”

“Then what exactly did you learn?”

Darius's expression hardened. “That she knows how to choose her words.”

Kael stood and moved towards the window.

“You wanted me to send her away before she had a chance to prove herself. I refused. That does not give you permission to intimidate her.”

“I am responsible for protecting Nightfang.”

“And I am responsible for deciding who stays within it.”

Darius lowered his head slightly. “As you wish, Alpha.”

But his agreement sounded reluctant.

After he left, Kael remained by the window, looking towards the training grounds.

He could feel the faint pull of the bond, distant but persistent. Lyra was somewhere within the compound.

He had no intention of allowing that connection to cloud his judgement. Yet Darius's growing interest in her troubled him for reasons he could not entirely explain.

Lyra returned to her room and sat on the edge of the narrow bed.

Her shoulder ached, her legs were exhausted, and now she had an adviser watching her every move.

She had thought crossing the border would be the hardest part of starting over.

She was beginning to understand that surviving among enemies required more than courage.

It required knowing whom not to trust.

And Darius had just made himself very clear.

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Answer He Couldn't Give

The silver clasp lay on Kael's desk. He had been staring at it for several minutes, turning it between his fingers as though the small piece of metal might reveal the identity of the person who had left it outside Ronan's door. It had belonged to his Beta three winters ago. Someone had kept it all this time and that person knew exactly what it meant. "Double the guards around Ronan's quarters," Kael ordered. Ronan stood beside the window, his expression hard. "You cannot keep me locked away because someone wants me frightened." "I'm not protecting you from fear. I'm protecting you from whoever wants you dead." "And what happens when they decide you're the next target?" Kael placed the clasp on the desk. "Then they'll discover why they should have stayed hidden." Lyra watched the exchange quietly. Ronan looked exhausted, but beneath it was something else. Guilt, perhaps. The kind that came from carrying a truth for too long. Before she could speak, a knock sounde

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE PRICE OF AN ALLIANCE

“Ronan?”Kael's voice was dangerously quiet.Mara nodded, her fingers gripping the edge of the bed.“Varek wasn't the one they needed to silence. He was only a distraction. Ronan knows what happened three winters ago, and someone is afraid he might finally tell the whole truth.”Ronan's expression hardened.“I've already told you everything I know.”“Perhaps,” Mara replied. “But have you told them everything you remember?”The Beta stared at her.Kael stepped between them.“Enough. We will not solve this by accusing one another. Until we understand what happened, nobody moves alone.”He turned towards the guards.“Double the security around the Beta's quarters. No one enters without my permission.”Ronan looked displeased.“I can protect myself.”“This isn't a discussion.”Before anyone could respond, a messenger appeared at the infirmary entrance.“Alpha, a letter has arrived from the neighbouring territory. It requires your immediate attention.”Kael took the sealed envelope. The cr

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Lyra barely waited for Kael's permission before heading towards the western gate.“Lyra, wait.”She stopped when Kael caught up with her.“You don't know who is waiting outside,” he said.“The guard said her name is Mara.”“And anyone could use that name.”Lyra swallowed her impatience. He was right. The last thing they needed was to walk into another trap.Kael signalled to the guards.“Open the smaller gate. Keep the main entrance secured.”Two warriors moved into position while Ronan approached from behind.“I'll come with you,” he said.Together, they stepped outside.A woman stood several feet from the entrance, her dark cloak dusty from the journey. Her hair was partly covered, and one sleeve had been torn near the elbow. But Lyra recognised her immediately.“Mara?”The woman lifted her head.“Lyra.”Lyra rushed towards her, then stopped just before embracing her.“What happened? We were told you were no longer in Ashen Moon.”Mara glanced at Kael and the warriors.“Perhaps we s

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME THEY BURIED

Kael stood over the remaining documents, reading the same line for the third time. The correspondence box had vanished, and whoever had taken it had known exactly what they wanted. But one letter remained. He held it beneath the desk lamp, examining the faded handwriting. The paper was old. There was no seal, only a name written at the bottom. Alpha Garrick. Kael's expression hardened. “Garrick?” Lyra, standing opposite him, looked up. “Ashen Moon's Alpha?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Then he was the one who warned your father?” “That is what this letter suggests.” Kael placed the document on the desk. The letter was dated three winters ago, two days before the northern patrol was ambushed. Its message was brief. Garrick had warned Kael's father that someone was leaking patrol information and advised him to postpone the northern assignment. But the final paragraph was what caught Lyra's attention. I cannot trust the people around me. If anything happens to my messenger

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    BEFORE THEY CAN HIDE THE TRUTH

Darius read the message twice. They found the warning. Move before they do.He held the paper over the flame of his desk candle. The edges caught fire, curling inward until the words disappeared beneath the smoke. For several seconds, he watched the ashes fall. Then he rang the small bell beside his desk.A guard entered.“Send word to Captain Varek. I want to see him tonight.”The guard hesitated. “Captain Varek is being held under watch, sir.”“Then find someone who can deliver a message without attracting attention.”“Yes, sir.”“And make sure nobody knows you came here.”The guard bowed and left.Darius leaned back in his chair.Kael had found the letter. That was unfortunate, but not yet disastrous. The document was old, and an old warning did not prove who had betrayed the patrol. What mattered was ensuring they never found the rest.Lyra was still in Kael's office when Ronan arrived.“I've arranged for a messenger to travel to Ashen Moon,” he said. “He can deliver a letter to M

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME ON THE NOTE

Lyra read the note again.Ronan was not the only one who knew. Ask Kael what his father was hiding.Beneath the words was a single name.Mara.She folded the paper carefully, but her fingers remained tense.Mara had helped her when everyone else had turned away. She had treated her wounds, given her food and a cloak, and risked trouble by helping her cross the border. Why would she send a message like this now?And how had it reached Nightfang territory?“You're still holding it.”Kael's voice came from the doorway.Lyra looked up. He had entered without her noticing, his expression fixed on the paper in her hand.“I was going to find you.”He approached. “What happened?”She handed him the note. His eyes moved across the words. When he reached the signature, his expression changed.“Mara?”“You know her?”“Not personally. But I know she was one of Ashen Moon's healers.”“She helped me before I crossed the border.”Kael looked at her. “Could she have written this?”“I don't know.”“Wo
