“Lyra?”

Beta Ronan's voice stopped her from retreating.

She stood in the doorway, clutching her empty basket. Behind him, Alpha Garrick watched her with narrowed eyes.

“How long have you been standing there?” Garrick asked.

“Long enough to hear you.”

“And what did you hear?”

“That you might send me away if my wolf doesn't manifest.”

His expression hardened. “You were listening to a private conversation.”

“I heard my name.”

“That doesn't give you permission to eavesdrop.”

Lyra lowered her gaze, but she couldn't leave without asking.

“Would you really send me away?”

“If you cannot contribute to this pack, I must consider what is best for everyone.”

“I do contribute.”

“You carry supplies and help the healers. Those things are useful, but they won't protect you when danger comes.”

“What was I supposed to do yesterday? Leave Kyle there?”

“You should have called for a guard.”

“And if the wolf had attacked before anyone arrived?”

“Enough.”

Garrick turned away.

“You may go.”

Lyra left without another word. She had hoped she had misunderstood his conversation. Now she knew she hadn't.

The following morning, the packhouse was already busy when the warning horn sounded.

“Rogues at the western boundary!”

Warriors rushed toward the trees, some shifting before they reached the path. Lyra set down the bundle of cloth she had been carrying and moved aside.

Then a child screamed.

Near a wooden cart, a little girl struggled beneath a fallen piece of timber. A dark wolf emerged between the trees, its fur bristling and its mouth stained with blood.

Lyra ran toward the child.

“Get away from her!” someone shouted.

She ignored the warning and grabbed the timber.

“Pull your leg back,” she told the girl.

The wolf lowered its head and charged.

Lyra threw herself over the child.

Pain exploded through her body.

She gasped as her bones twisted beneath her skin. A growl tore from her throat, deeper than any sound she had made before. Her fingers struck the earth, and fur spread across her changing limbs.

For one terrifying moment, she couldn't understand what was happening.

Then the world sharpened.

She could smell the damp soil, the blood on the ground, and the child's fear behind her.

Her wolf had finally come.

The rogue lunged.

Lyra moved on instinct, meeting it halfway. Her teeth caught its shoulder, and they rolled across the dirt. The animal snapped at her face, but she dodged and struck back.

She had never fought like this before. Her new body felt powerful, yet unfamiliar. She could hear warriors shouting, but their voices seemed distant.

“Lyra, move!”

A warrior approached, his dark coat marked by a white patch across the chest.

“It's me! You're safe!”

Lyra bared her teeth. Everything around her felt like a threat.

The rogue seized the opportunity and fled toward the trees. Two warriors pursued it while the other remained where he was.

“Easy,” he said, keeping his distance.

Lyra crouched, ready to attack.

Then the little girl whimpered.

Lyra turned.

A woman had freed the child from the timber and was checking her injured ankle. Seeing that she was safe, Lyra's breathing gradually slowed.

She looked down at her paws.

Pale grey fur covered her body. Her claws pressed into the earth, and her senses were sharper than she had ever imagined.

She had spent years waiting for this moment.

Now she didn't know what to do with it.

By the time Lyra returned to human form, Mara had arrived with a blanket. Lyra sank to her knees, trembling as the healer covered her shoulders.

“I shifted,” Lyra whispered.

Mara smiled gently. “Yes, you did.”

Lyra looked at her hands, still struggling to believe it.

A crowd had gathered around the clearing. Some wolves stared in surprise; others whispered among themselves.

Then Alpha Garrick pushed through them.

“What happened here?”

“A rogue crossed the boundary,” a warrior reported. “It went for the child. Lyra intervened.”

“And she shifted?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Garrick turned to Lyra.

“Can you control your wolf?”

She clutched the blanket. “I've never shifted before.”

“That wasn't my question.”

“No,” she admitted. “Not yet.”

Mara stepped forward. “She has only just shifted. Give her time to learn.”

Garrick's gaze remained fixed on Lyra.

“We cannot afford to wait until she hurts someone.”

Lyra looked up at him. “I can learn. I'll train every day if I have to.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

Garrick's expression gave nothing away.

“Then you should have been ready for this possibility.”

“How could I prepare for something I've never experienced?”

“Enough, Lyra.”

She fell silent.

Her wolf had finally come, but as she looked around at the wary faces surrounding her, she realised that nothing had changed the way they saw her.

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Answer He Couldn't Give

The silver clasp lay on Kael's desk. He had been staring at it for several minutes, turning it between his fingers as though the small piece of metal might reveal the identity of the person who had left it outside Ronan's door. It had belonged to his Beta three winters ago. Someone had kept it all this time and that person knew exactly what it meant. "Double the guards around Ronan's quarters," Kael ordered. Ronan stood beside the window, his expression hard. "You cannot keep me locked away because someone wants me frightened." "I'm not protecting you from fear. I'm protecting you from whoever wants you dead." "And what happens when they decide you're the next target?" Kael placed the clasp on the desk. "Then they'll discover why they should have stayed hidden." Lyra watched the exchange quietly. Ronan looked exhausted, but beneath it was something else. Guilt, perhaps. The kind that came from carrying a truth for too long. Before she could speak, a knock sounde

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE PRICE OF AN ALLIANCE

“Ronan?”Kael's voice was dangerously quiet.Mara nodded, her fingers gripping the edge of the bed.“Varek wasn't the one they needed to silence. He was only a distraction. Ronan knows what happened three winters ago, and someone is afraid he might finally tell the whole truth.”Ronan's expression hardened.“I've already told you everything I know.”“Perhaps,” Mara replied. “But have you told them everything you remember?”The Beta stared at her.Kael stepped between them.“Enough. We will not solve this by accusing one another. Until we understand what happened, nobody moves alone.”He turned towards the guards.“Double the security around the Beta's quarters. No one enters without my permission.”Ronan looked displeased.“I can protect myself.”“This isn't a discussion.”Before anyone could respond, a messenger appeared at the infirmary entrance.“Alpha, a letter has arrived from the neighbouring territory. It requires your immediate attention.”Kael took the sealed envelope. The cr

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Lyra barely waited for Kael's permission before heading towards the western gate.“Lyra, wait.”She stopped when Kael caught up with her.“You don't know who is waiting outside,” he said.“The guard said her name is Mara.”“And anyone could use that name.”Lyra swallowed her impatience. He was right. The last thing they needed was to walk into another trap.Kael signalled to the guards.“Open the smaller gate. Keep the main entrance secured.”Two warriors moved into position while Ronan approached from behind.“I'll come with you,” he said.Together, they stepped outside.A woman stood several feet from the entrance, her dark cloak dusty from the journey. Her hair was partly covered, and one sleeve had been torn near the elbow. But Lyra recognised her immediately.“Mara?”The woman lifted her head.“Lyra.”Lyra rushed towards her, then stopped just before embracing her.“What happened? We were told you were no longer in Ashen Moon.”Mara glanced at Kael and the warriors.“Perhaps we s

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME THEY BURIED

Kael stood over the remaining documents, reading the same line for the third time. The correspondence box had vanished, and whoever had taken it had known exactly what they wanted. But one letter remained. He held it beneath the desk lamp, examining the faded handwriting. The paper was old. There was no seal, only a name written at the bottom. Alpha Garrick. Kael's expression hardened. “Garrick?” Lyra, standing opposite him, looked up. “Ashen Moon's Alpha?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Then he was the one who warned your father?” “That is what this letter suggests.” Kael placed the document on the desk. The letter was dated three winters ago, two days before the northern patrol was ambushed. Its message was brief. Garrick had warned Kael's father that someone was leaking patrol information and advised him to postpone the northern assignment. But the final paragraph was what caught Lyra's attention. I cannot trust the people around me. If anything happens to my messenger

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    BEFORE THEY CAN HIDE THE TRUTH

Darius read the message twice. They found the warning. Move before they do.He held the paper over the flame of his desk candle. The edges caught fire, curling inward until the words disappeared beneath the smoke. For several seconds, he watched the ashes fall. Then he rang the small bell beside his desk.A guard entered.“Send word to Captain Varek. I want to see him tonight.”The guard hesitated. “Captain Varek is being held under watch, sir.”“Then find someone who can deliver a message without attracting attention.”“Yes, sir.”“And make sure nobody knows you came here.”The guard bowed and left.Darius leaned back in his chair.Kael had found the letter. That was unfortunate, but not yet disastrous. The document was old, and an old warning did not prove who had betrayed the patrol. What mattered was ensuring they never found the rest.Lyra was still in Kael's office when Ronan arrived.“I've arranged for a messenger to travel to Ashen Moon,” he said. “He can deliver a letter to M

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME ON THE NOTE

Lyra read the note again.Ronan was not the only one who knew. Ask Kael what his father was hiding.Beneath the words was a single name.Mara.She folded the paper carefully, but her fingers remained tense.Mara had helped her when everyone else had turned away. She had treated her wounds, given her food and a cloak, and risked trouble by helping her cross the border. Why would she send a message like this now?And how had it reached Nightfang territory?“You're still holding it.”Kael's voice came from the doorway.Lyra looked up. He had entered without her noticing, his expression fixed on the paper in her hand.“I was going to find you.”He approached. “What happened?”She handed him the note. His eyes moved across the words. When he reached the signature, his expression changed.“Mara?”“You know her?”“Not personally. But I know she was one of Ashen Moon's healers.”“She helped me before I crossed the border.”Kael looked at her. “Could she have written this?”“I don't know.”“Wo
