Lyra had imagined many things when her wolf finally appeared.

She had pictured the pack cheering, Mara smiling with pride, and even Garrick admitting he had been wrong about her.

She hadn't expected the silence.

“Everyone, return to your duties,” Garrick ordered.

The gathered wolves began to disperse, though several continued whispering.

“She couldn't even control herself.”

“What if she attacks someone next time?”

“Perhaps Garrick is right.”

Lyra pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders.

Mara helped her stand. “Come inside. You need to rest.”

Before Lyra could answer, Garrick spoke again.

“Lyra will report to my office this evening.”

“She needs time to recover,” Mara protested.

“She has until this evening.”

He walked away before either woman could respond.

Inside the healer's room, Lyra sat on a narrow bed while Mara examined her hands and arms.

“Does anything hurt?”

“My whole body.”

“That's expected after a first shift. Drink some water and rest.”

Lyra accepted the cup.

“Do you think he'll let me stay?”

Mara paused. “I think you should prepare yourself for either answer.”

Lyra looked away. She had hoped that getting her wolf would settle every argument about her place in the pack. Now she wondered whether anything she did would ever be enough.

By evening, she was summoned to the packhouse office.

Garrick sat behind his desk, while Beta Ronan stood near the window. A small travel bag rested beside the door.

Lyra stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Your belongings,” Garrick replied.

She waited for him to explain that he had changed his mind. He didn't.

“You're sending me away?”

“Ashen Moon cannot risk keeping an uncontrolled wolf within its borders.”

“I shifted for the first time today. You can't expect me to understand everything immediately.”

“I expect every member of this pack to control themselves around others.”

“Then teach me.”

Garrick leaned back in his chair.

“You've had years to prepare for this possibility.”

“How? I couldn't practise shifting when my wolf hadn't appeared!”

“Your circumstances do not change my responsibility to protect this pack.”

Lyra turned to Ronan.

“You heard what happened with Kyle yesterday. Today, I saved that girl's life. Doesn't that count for anything?”

Ronan's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

Lyra faced Garrick again.

“I'll train every day. I'll follow your rules. Just give me a chance.”

“My decision is final.”

Her chest tightened.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“That is no longer my responsibility.”

For several seconds, Lyra couldn't speak. She had carried supplies, helped the healers, and done whatever work she was given. She had never asked to be treated like a warrior. She had only wanted a place where she belonged.

Now everything she owned lay inside a small bag.

“May I say goodbye to Mara?”

“You may leave in the morning. Until then, remain in your room.”

Garrick returned to his papers.

Lyra picked up her bag and walked out without looking at Ronan again.

Mara was waiting outside the office. One look at Lyra's face told her everything.

“He's made his decision?”

Lyra nodded.

Mara drew her into an embrace, and Lyra let herself lean against her.

“I don't understand,” she whispered. “I finally got my wolf. Why isn't that enough?”

“Because some people decide what you are before giving you the chance to show them who you can become.”

Lyra swallowed the ache in her throat.

“What am I supposed to do now?”

“Take what you have, keep yourself safe, and find your next step. You don't have to figure out your whole life tonight.”

Mara packed food, herbs, and a thicker cloak into Lyra's bag. She also gave her a small knife and showed her how to secure it inside her clothing.

“Stay away from unfamiliar wolves,” she warned. “And don't assume every stranger is your enemy—or your friend.”

“You make it sound easy,” Lyra said with a faint smile.

“It isn't. That's why you must be careful.”

That night, Lyra sat beside her window, listening to the packhouse settle into darkness. She knew these sounds better than anything beyond the borders. Every creaking floorboard and distant howl reminded her of the life she was about to lose.

By sunrise, she was ready.

Mara walked with her to the western path but stopped before the boundary.

“I wish I could come with you,” she said.

“You have your work here.”

“And you have a life ahead of you, even if you cannot see it yet.”

Lyra hugged her tightly.

“Thank you for everything.”

“Promise me you'll be careful.”

“I promise.”

Mara stepped back, looking as though she wanted to say more.

Lyra turned toward the forest. For years, she had believed her wolf would finally give her a reason to be accepted. Instead, she was leaving the only home she had ever known with little more than a bag and a few supplies.

She glanced back. No one had come to see her off.

Lyra faced the trees again.

She was afraid. She had no destination, no allies beyond the pack boundary, and no idea how to survive alone.

But she would not return to beg.

With her bag over her shoulder, she crossed into unfamiliar territory.

The forest grew thicker as she walked. The familiar scent of Ashen Moon faded, replaced by strange trails she couldn't identify.

Then she caught a scent that made her stop.

Wolves.

Not Ashen Moon wolves.

The territory ahead belonged to Nightfang, the pack her people had warned her about for as long as she could remember.

Lyra tightened her grip on the strap of her bag and continued forward.

She had nowhere else to go.

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    The Answer He Couldn't Give

The silver clasp lay on Kael's desk. He had been staring at it for several minutes, turning it between his fingers as though the small piece of metal might reveal the identity of the person who had left it outside Ronan's door. It had belonged to his Beta three winters ago. Someone had kept it all this time and that person knew exactly what it meant. "Double the guards around Ronan's quarters," Kael ordered. Ronan stood beside the window, his expression hard. "You cannot keep me locked away because someone wants me frightened." "I'm not protecting you from fear. I'm protecting you from whoever wants you dead." "And what happens when they decide you're the next target?" Kael placed the clasp on the desk. "Then they'll discover why they should have stayed hidden." Lyra watched the exchange quietly. Ronan looked exhausted, but beneath it was something else. Guilt, perhaps. The kind that came from carrying a truth for too long. Before she could speak, a knock sounde

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE PRICE OF AN ALLIANCE

“Ronan?”Kael's voice was dangerously quiet.Mara nodded, her fingers gripping the edge of the bed.“Varek wasn't the one they needed to silence. He was only a distraction. Ronan knows what happened three winters ago, and someone is afraid he might finally tell the whole truth.”Ronan's expression hardened.“I've already told you everything I know.”“Perhaps,” Mara replied. “But have you told them everything you remember?”The Beta stared at her.Kael stepped between them.“Enough. We will not solve this by accusing one another. Until we understand what happened, nobody moves alone.”He turned towards the guards.“Double the security around the Beta's quarters. No one enters without my permission.”Ronan looked displeased.“I can protect myself.”“This isn't a discussion.”Before anyone could respond, a messenger appeared at the infirmary entrance.“Alpha, a letter has arrived from the neighbouring territory. It requires your immediate attention.”Kael took the sealed envelope. The cr

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Lyra barely waited for Kael's permission before heading towards the western gate.“Lyra, wait.”She stopped when Kael caught up with her.“You don't know who is waiting outside,” he said.“The guard said her name is Mara.”“And anyone could use that name.”Lyra swallowed her impatience. He was right. The last thing they needed was to walk into another trap.Kael signalled to the guards.“Open the smaller gate. Keep the main entrance secured.”Two warriors moved into position while Ronan approached from behind.“I'll come with you,” he said.Together, they stepped outside.A woman stood several feet from the entrance, her dark cloak dusty from the journey. Her hair was partly covered, and one sleeve had been torn near the elbow. But Lyra recognised her immediately.“Mara?”The woman lifted her head.“Lyra.”Lyra rushed towards her, then stopped just before embracing her.“What happened? We were told you were no longer in Ashen Moon.”Mara glanced at Kael and the warriors.“Perhaps we s

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME THEY BURIED

Kael stood over the remaining documents, reading the same line for the third time. The correspondence box had vanished, and whoever had taken it had known exactly what they wanted. But one letter remained. He held it beneath the desk lamp, examining the faded handwriting. The paper was old. There was no seal, only a name written at the bottom. Alpha Garrick. Kael's expression hardened. “Garrick?” Lyra, standing opposite him, looked up. “Ashen Moon's Alpha?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Then he was the one who warned your father?” “That is what this letter suggests.” Kael placed the document on the desk. The letter was dated three winters ago, two days before the northern patrol was ambushed. Its message was brief. Garrick had warned Kael's father that someone was leaking patrol information and advised him to postpone the northern assignment. But the final paragraph was what caught Lyra's attention. I cannot trust the people around me. If anything happens to my messenger

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    BEFORE THEY CAN HIDE THE TRUTH

Darius read the message twice. They found the warning. Move before they do.He held the paper over the flame of his desk candle. The edges caught fire, curling inward until the words disappeared beneath the smoke. For several seconds, he watched the ashes fall. Then he rang the small bell beside his desk.A guard entered.“Send word to Captain Varek. I want to see him tonight.”The guard hesitated. “Captain Varek is being held under watch, sir.”“Then find someone who can deliver a message without attracting attention.”“Yes, sir.”“And make sure nobody knows you came here.”The guard bowed and left.Darius leaned back in his chair.Kael had found the letter. That was unfortunate, but not yet disastrous. The document was old, and an old warning did not prove who had betrayed the patrol. What mattered was ensuring they never found the rest.Lyra was still in Kael's office when Ronan arrived.“I've arranged for a messenger to travel to Ashen Moon,” he said. “He can deliver a letter to M

  • MATED WITH THE FORBIDDEN ALPHA    THE NAME ON THE NOTE

Lyra read the note again.Ronan was not the only one who knew. Ask Kael what his father was hiding.Beneath the words was a single name.Mara.She folded the paper carefully, but her fingers remained tense.Mara had helped her when everyone else had turned away. She had treated her wounds, given her food and a cloak, and risked trouble by helping her cross the border. Why would she send a message like this now?And how had it reached Nightfang territory?“You're still holding it.”Kael's voice came from the doorway.Lyra looked up. He had entered without her noticing, his expression fixed on the paper in her hand.“I was going to find you.”He approached. “What happened?”She handed him the note. His eyes moved across the words. When he reached the signature, his expression changed.“Mara?”“You know her?”“Not personally. But I know she was one of Ashen Moon's healers.”“She helped me before I crossed the border.”Kael looked at her. “Could she have written this?”“I don't know.”“Wo
