Chapter 5

Author: Scarlett Flame
In the Arctic, I kept myself busy on purpose.

Ava and I watched the northern lights, chased whales and seals on a research ship, and packed our days with activities to keep my mind from drifting back to old memories.

Despite his demands, I definitely didn't unblock Ethan.

Regardless, Ava, who was always by my side, occasionally showed me his and Sylvia's Twitter updates. I could see they were having a great time in Switzerland.

Strangely enough, Ethan, who never used to post much, now shares something almost every day. Sometimes, it was a shot from the Aletsch Glacier, other times it was a picture from the top of St. Peter's Basilica.

Even though I was not keeping tabs on him like I used to, mutual friends still asked why I was not in these photos, or why I didn't go to Switzerland with him. After all, for years, I was the one always by his side in those shots.

I just told them I had already promised Ava I'd go on this trip.

Every mention of Ethan still hit a nerve, but I was trying not to shy away from his name. I kept telling myself that once I got past this withdrawal, I could finally move on.

It had been almost two months without a word from him—the longest we had ever gone without talking since we first met. Before, I would always be the first to make up within a few days.

Time really does heal.

As the days went by, I found myself thinking less and less about Ethan and genuinely enjoying the Arctic landscapes.

Just then, Ethan called.

"Cynthia, why did you go to the Arctic without telling me? Didn't we promise to see the northern lights together?"

He didn't seem to notice it, but there was a hint of unease in his voice. It was a tone I'd never heard from him before.

"I got my Caltech offer letter. You should have yours by now too. When you get back, I have a surprise for you to celebrate."

I resisted the urge to hang up. "I’m not coming back. I’m going straight to school. You don’t need to worry about me."

"Cynthia, how long are you going to keep this up? You blocked me, and I didn't even complain. Now I’m trying to make things right, and you still have a problem?" He snapped, his voice turning cold.

"If you don’t come back, then don’t ever bother looking for me again."

He hung up.

I sighed and added that number to my blocked list too. I was actually in the middle of packing. I had lied. I was planning to head back home, just without letting Ethan know.

Then, my dad called. Apparently, they'd just received a confirmation email from MIT, saying my spot was secured and the tuition fees had been paid. It was only then that they realized I had changed my college plans.

"Did you and Ethan have a fight? You didn't tell anyone before changing your application. We’re not trying to control your choices, but we’re just worried you might regret this later if you decide you want to be with Ethan after all."

I could tell my parents were concerned, and I didn't want to keep them in the dark anymore, so I laid it all out.

"Ethan has a girlfriend now. I need my own life, not one that just revolves around him. Besides, Ava will be with me at MIT, so I won't be alone. Ethan doesn’t know about my decision yet. Please keep this between us. I don’t want to see him before I leave."

They must have sensed the hurt I was holding back, so they didn't push further. They respected my wishes and promised to keep my secret.

Ethan probably didn’t listen to my words. In the following days, I kept seeing him everywhere. I even started to suspect that he might be stalking me.But I didn’t want to see him. I rejected all his invitations, even returned the gifts he gave me, unopened. At this time, Miles and I had just confirmed our relationship.Miles developed a strong animosity towards Ethan. Every time he saw him, he would pull me away and openly show his jealousy and possessiveness.Until one day, when Ethan stopped Miles off-campus and beat him up, I finally couldn’t hold back and went to confront him.I really couldn’t understand what he was thinking. Back then, it was he who didn’t want to be with just me and wanted to experience being with other people. Now, he was pretending to be sentimental and disrupting my life. When he realized my intention, Ethan’s emotions completely spiraled out of control. "Cynthia, do you doubt me? I didn't send someone to beat him up; it was my underling who wanted to

On Christmas Day, to my surprise, Ethan showed up at our door."Mrs. Saville, my parents are out, and I’m spending Christmas alone this year. May I join you and your family?" Ethan asked politely, and my parents couldn’t refuse, so they invited him in.Ethan naturally sat down next to me.I wanted to move away, but it would be too obvious, so I just stayed where I was.The relatives who came over to celebrate the holiday with us didn’t know that Ethan and I were no longer on good terms and continued to tease us like they always did. Ethan had been chatting happily with everyone, but as I explained things with a smile, his expression slowly darkened. When it was time for everyone to go to bed, I was about to head to my room, but Ethan grabbed my arm."Are you in such a hurry to clarify our relationship?"I tilted my head, confused. "What relationship do we have?"My words left Ethan frozen in place. He seemed like he wanted to say something, but just as he was about to speak, my

After Ethan declared he'd never forgive me, I didn't see him again.Ava sent me a screenshot of his and Sylvia’s official relationship announcement on Twitter.I barely glanced at it before deleting the message. Why should I waste my time on someone who no longer had anything to do with me?I told Ava not to send me any more updates about Ethan. I genuinely believed that was the last I'd hear of him. However, on the day I left for college, I had the bad luck of running into Ethan and Sylvia at the airport.Ethan saw me too, but clearly still sulking, he quickly looked away, pretending not to notice me.I turned my head as well and made my way to the boarding gate. I caught him shooting me a sharp glare when he realized I had no intention of talking to him, but Sylvia quickly pulled him along with a possessive grip.Ava, who had come to see me off, shot them a fierce glare of her own before linking her arm with mine and guiding me away. After that, Ethan and I truly fell out of

I spent the entire party simmering with frustration, just waiting for it to end so I could leave. However, as the night drew to a close, Mrs. Luciano pulled me aside. "Cynthia, I’m so glad you made it tonight. I’ve missed you, dear."She clasped my hands warmly, drawing me into a conversation that Sylvia couldn’t break into, despite hovering nearby with a less-than-pleased expression. Earlier, Sylvia had tried to strike up a conversation with Mrs. Luciano, but the response had been noticeably cold.Unfazed by Sylvia’s icy glares, Mrs. Luciano took my hand and placed it on Ethan’s arm, speaking with the kind of earnest affection only a mother can muster. "When you two head off to college, you’ll be each other’s closest family. Ethan, you’re the guy. You have to take good care of Cynthia. Don’t upset her anymore."Ethan pulled his arm back, letting out a sharp, irritated huff. "She doesn’t need me to take care of her anymore. She hasn’t even bothered to add my number back."There wa

The day I returned home happened to be the night of Ethan's graduation party. His father, Mr. Luciano, was the current Don of the mafia, and with Ethan heading off to college, he was expected to gradually start learning the ropes of the family business. So, while the event was framed as a celebration of his academic achievement, it was really just another networking affair for the family’s business associates.Since part of my family's business still relied on Mr. Luciano, I didn’t want to put my parents in a tough spot, so I agreed to attend. The moment I stepped into the grand hall, my eyes locked onto someone I hadn't seen in a long time. It was Ethan, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit. He looked even more mature and imposing than he had at prom.Seeing him again after two months stirred a confusing mix of emotions in me. I wasn't even sure what I felt—maybe anger, maybe regret, or perhaps just the remnants of a once-strong attachment. All I knew was that my first instinct w
