Aria's POV

I wake up screaming. Not because of a dream. Because of the silence.

For one terrible second, everything feels normal. The fire crackles. The night wind presses gently against the windows. My body is heavy with sleep and exhaustion. My hand moves without thought, instinct, not choice, to my stomach.

Nothing answers me. No quiet hum of life that has been with me every second since I first realized I was no longer alone.

My breath stutters. “No,” I whisper. “No… no, no, no.”

I sit up too fast, pain slicing through my spine, but I barely feel it. Panic crashes into me like a wave, cold and brutal. I reach inward, past fear, past exhaustion, reaching for the bond.

The bond that has always been there.

And then, it snaps.

The rupture is violent. Not a fading. Not even weakening. A tear.

It feels like someone is taking their hands and ripping something out of my chest. I scream as pain explodes through me, sharp and blinding, stealing the air from my lungs.

  • MOONBORN: THE REJECTED MATE'S RISE    CHAPTER 44:

Magnus POVI learned the truth on a night that refused to stay quiet. The wind howled through the broken towers of the Citadel, dragging old ash across the stone floor like it was trying to erase me. I stood alone in the prophecy chamber, staring at words carved so deep into the wall they looked like scars. They were never meant to crown me.They were meant to end me.I laughed at first. A short, sharp sound that echoed too loudly. “Figures,” I muttered. “The universe never did like me.”The runes burned faintly as I touched them. Blood magic. Ancient. Older than the Councils. Older than mercy. He who bends the age will be undone by the age.His reign ends not in power, but in silence. Death.I clenched my fist. For years, they told me the prophecy spoke of a ruler, someone who would rise, break the old order, and sit above kings. They let me believe it. No, they pushed me to believe it.All so I would walk willingly toward my own execution.“You lying bastards,” I whispered to the e

Chapter 43 – The Price of BetrayalKael's POV The curse wakes me before the pain does. It always starts in my chest, tight, crushing, like invisible hands closing around my heart. Then it spreads. Fire through my veins. Ice in my bones. A reminder carved into my body for one simple crime.“I betrayed my true mate.”I gasp, jerking upright as agony slams into me so hard I fall off the bed. My knees hit a stone. My palms burn. My vision fractures.“Not again,” I choke. “Please, not now.”The curse doesn’t listen. It never does.I claw at my chest as the mark flares beneath my skin, black veins crawling outward like living things. Every pulse of pain carries a memory with it.Aria’s eyes looked at me like she didn’t know me anymore.Aria’s voice when she said my name, as it hurt her to speak it.Aria turned away because I was too weak, too afraid, too blind to fight the lies fed to us.“Say it,” the curse whispers in my head. “Say what you are.”“I know,” I growl through clenched teet

  • MOONBORN: THE REJECTED MATE'S RISE    CHAPTER 42:

Kael's POV I thought the bond was dead. That was the lie I had wrapped my heart around with, the lie I used to breathe.I was standing on the balcony when it happened. Night wind. Iron clouds. The city below is glowing like nothing in my chest ever could. I was counting breaths, trying not to think of her, when pain ripped through me so fast I dropped to my knees. Not mine.Hers. Aria.I gasped, my fingers digging into stone as fire tore through my ribs. My vision shattered white, then red. My heart slammed so hard I thought it would break my bones.“No,” I whispered. “No. That’s not possible.”The bond was supposed to be broken. Snapped. Burned away by choice and betrayal and blood. So why did I feel her scream inside my skull? The pain wasn’t physical at first. It was worse. Fear. Sharp and choking. The kind that freezes your lungs and makes your soul curl in on itself.“Aria,” I breathed, the name ripping out of me like a wound. Her emotions crashed into me in waves: panic, grief

  • MOONBORN: THE REJECTED MATE'S RISE    CHAPTER 41:

Lilith's POV Balance is a lie. The child won’t stop crying. At first, it annoyed me.Now—it pleases me. The sound echoes through the cave, sharp and thin, scraping against my nerves in a way that makes my skin prickle. The cries bounce off the stone walls, circle back, crawl inside my head. Each sob is a reminder that I am standing at the center of something vast and terrible.Something is right. “Hush,” I said softly, crouching beside the altar. “You cry like you don’t understand your place in this.”The baby’s tiny face is red, twisted in fear. Moonlight clings to their skin, glowing faintly beneath the dirt and blood. That glow used to unsettle me.Now it excites me. I reach out and brush my fingers across the child’s cheek. The scream sharpens.I inhale slowly, deeply. “Yes,” I whisper. “That’s it.”The shadows around us ripple, responding to my pleasure. They curl tighter, closer, like loyal pets. The blood sigils on the floor pulse in time with the child’s cries, and I feel th

  • MOONBORN: THE REJECTED MATE'S RISE    CHAPTER 40:

Lilith's POVThey screamed beautifully at first. Now they are quiet. The cave reeks of iron and burnt magic, thick enough to coat my tongue. Blood runs in slow rivers across the stone floor, pooling in the grooves I carved with my own hands. Every line matters. Every symbol was drawn exactly as the voices instructed.I step back, breathing hard, and look at what I’ve made. Three bodies lie at the center of the circle.Pack members. They trusted me.They followed me. They called me Luna. I laugh softly.“What fools,” I murmured, wiping blood from my cheek with shaking fingers. “You should have known that love is always expensive.”The magic hums beneath my feet, alive and eager. It climbs my legs, wrapping around my spine, and sinking into my bones. It hurts—oh, it hurts, but pain has never scared me. Pain is familiar. Pain is honest.Power is worth it. It always is.“Stand,” I whisper. The blood responds, and the bodies twitch. Then still. Their lives drain completely into the sigils,
