FABIOLA
My hold on my purse wasn’t steady, in reality, nothing about me was steady, my heartbeat, the movement of my legs, nothing.
I was a few seconds away from speaking to my high school crush and every ounce of me was urging me to back down, but I kept reminding myself. I am not the girl I used to be back in high school. This Fabiola right here wasn’t a shy nerd who was liked only by teachers. My college year was going to be different, good different, and this is one of the ways I can make that happen.
He stood at the corner of the pitch, a bottle of water in his right hand while his left hand carefully dabbed his sweaty face with a white towel.
“Hi.” My words came out soft and unsteady.
Lan lifted his head, a brow raised.
Exactly, that was the face he always made, the one I loved, the one I see in my dreams.
“Hey,” his soft eyes scanned me as he straightened to his full height, towering over me.
He smelled like soap, a very intoxicating soap that I felt was edible.
I stood still, taking in his scent, his green eyes on me, his body towering over me. I lost my voice, my words. I couldn’t speak nor could I recall the words I rehearsed. His gaze danced with curiosity, I guess he was wondering what was going on because I was too.
I didn’t give it a second thought before pushing the bottle of water to him, pressing it against his chest I could swear was rock hard. He narrowed his eyes, his brows weren’t the only part that was arched, his head was too. But he was Lan Hawkeye, the calmest and most charming guy I knew. Even though he was a hot commodity, he had always been so humble. He accepted the bottle of water although he already had one.
“Thanks?” He held the bottle expecting me to say more but I just turned around hurrying away, with strides so long and fast I nearly broke into a run.
“Okay, that was weird,” I heard him mutter behind me.
Yes, that was weird Fabiola. What was that? I was supposed to walk up to him and start a meaningful conversation but I failed and would never be able to show my face before him ever.
………
I arrived home and pushed the door harshly like it offended me. Taking off my shoes at the entrance, my ears perked up at the yelling voices. My Uncle and Aunt, arguing again.
They always had something to disagree on.
Usually, I don’t pay attention to whatever their arguments were about but this time, my name was being mentioned repeatedly. Was I the reason they were fighting? Why? My curiosity got the best of me, I dragged my feet up the stairs to listen closely.
“Fabiola is not a child! For a matter of fact, she owes us!” That was my Aunt Cathy. .
“Owe you! What does that mean? She lost her parents, she lost them because…….
“That doesn’t matter, we could have chosen to drop her off at the orphanage but we didn’t.” Aunt Cathy harshly interrupted him.
“Can you hear yourself, I can't do that to an innocent child!”
Do what? My brows creased. Whatever was going on didn’t seem like it was going in my favor.
“Then what is your plan? You know you can’t go against the Hawkeyes, you know what will happen if you do!”
The Hawkeyes? Wait, what?.
“Fabiola.” Penelope, my ever-so-sweet cousin, disrupted my listening. She looked at me differently today, she didn’t have that withering look on.
“What’s going on?” I walked closer and she moved back like she could be able to avoid the question by giving me space.
“Fabiola.” Aunty Cathy’s sharp firm tone sounded from behind. “Robert will tell you.” She tipped her chin towards Uncle Robert who was standing beside her.
He couldn’t meet my eyes, but Cathy sized me up.
“My dear,” he said, approaching me, his eyes wandering everywhere, never settling on me. “What do you think about getting married?”
“Married?” I projected my gentle voice as loudly as I could.
“Yes, you would have to marry into the Hawkeye family,” Aunt Cathy chirped in, she lacked the patience to let Uncle Robert do the talking.
“I don’t understand,” I restlessly tucked my hair behind my ears.
“Tobias Hawkeye needs a bride and you shall be his bride.” She articulated each word making sure I caught every single one.
“Tobias Hawkeye? The footballer?” I darted my eyes from my cousin to her father.
“Look on the bright side, Fab, he’s a billionaire,” Pen made a poor attempt to ease the tension.
“Then why don’t you marry him?” I snapped at her.
“He doesn’t want Pen, he wants you.” The lie fell smoothly from Aunt Cathy’s lips.
“He doesn’t know me!” I usually do not talk back, but this was a hard fate to accept without a fight.
“You think so?” Aunt Cathy moved towards me with an intimidating confidence. “You’ll marry Tobias, the topic isn't up for debate. If you really appreciate the roof we’ve placed over your head, education, good meals, and dresses you would….
“Cathy!!!” Uncle Robert stopped her before she could go further. “You will not speak to her like that.”
“What’s the need to sugarcoat?” She gave her head a slight tilt.
She was right. In the end, that’s what they all wanted me to do, to marry a man almost twice my age. I raced to my room, my eyes brimming with tears. I owed them everything, they took me in and sheltered me, it is only right that I grant them this one favor. But still it sounded and felt wrong, so wrong.
I was just twenty!
FABIOLA. “Why do you think that I like you?” I looked ahead at the professor, my cheeks heating up in embarrassment. “Because I’m no dummy,” he voiced. I gave him a proper look, finding it hard to break the news that I wasn’t a fan girl of his anymore. “And why do you like me?”That question was the bomb. My heart palpitated as I waited for a response.“What’s there not to like Fab, and why are you responding to my questions with more questions?”“And that should be all!” Sulzman interrupted the dreadful conversation. “The history of Norelin runs deeper than you think. I would be waiting for more research; that is your first assignment for this class.”“He throws assignments whenever he doesn’t have answers to questions.” Lan let me know and that was all he said before he rose from the seat. He was obviously mad, but about what? He wants me to tell Tobias I have a crush on him. Why?In the back seat of the car, on my drive home; I scrolled through the internet and came across Ro
FABIOLA.I scrolled through my laptop, searching for an extra course to help increase my credits. I needed good credits to maintain my scholarship. Then it hit me that I didn't have to work hard for my scholarship anymore. Even if I lose credits, my debit card could cover the bills. One of the advantages of being a captive of the Hawkeyes. Money. Speaking of cards, I searched for the purse I took to the Hawkeyes two nights ago. When I found it, I carefully pulled out the card, as if it were heavy. I struggled to read what was written on it without my glasses. I was mad at Tobias. He was mad at me too, so I couldn’t possibly bring this up to him at this moment. I carefully shoved it into my journal and went to stand before the mirror, letting my hair down. “Today is going to be great,” I said to myself, picking up my monster purse. I was about to pick up the book I was reading from the table to put in my purse, but I remembered Tobias bought it, so I left it. I needed to be mad at
TOBIAS. To my own good fortune, she said nothing else; she turned on her heel and left, slamming the door as if she wanted to knock me down. She was angry and so was I. I didn’t get a wink of sleep all night. I just pretended to stare at the plot Ace sent me, while my mind wandered to my livid little wife; who told me she didn’t like it when I touched her. I was certain I didn't lose my game. I was just thirty-six. Yet her saying that bruised my ego. Would she have liked it better if it was Lan? No. Why was my brain including Lan in this? My situation just got worse. Of course I wasn’t dumb; they saw each other almost every day at that stupid campus and the way he spoke about her the other day; I gathered they were very acquainted.I slammed the laptop shut and twirled around on the swivel chair. No one, I mean no one; has had me this worked up in a while. Once it was dawn, I checked in on Ace to see if he was still in town before grabbing my keys. I drove through the snowy m
TOBIAS. She couldn’t take me; she was young and fragile for the kind of needs she was igniting in me. I would break her if I let myself loose. “What do you mean?” She asked, her hips shifting mistakenly on my hardness, causing me to hiss. This little girl. One thing was sure, I wasn’t going to have sex. I already broke my celibacy journey so I couldn’t afford to fold even more. I wouldn’t do it with her, although every fiber in me wanted to; I wanted her. I didn’t have words to respond to her questions, just actions, so I went for her lips again. We kissed all the way through the ride, and I didn’t get enough; instead, I was dying for more whenever we kissed. When the car came to a stop she slipped down my lap and her absence was immediately felt. “Follow me,” My voice was audible to her only. This isn’t what I should be doing. I accepted my father’s invitation just to read the room, to know what to expect and I did that. I perceived war. I was supposed to be plotting, not gett
TOBIAS. The instant I stepped out of the room Tobias asked that we leave. I slipped the card his father had given me into my purse. I didn’t know why I was sneaking it around because I was eventually going to tell him about it, but I didn’t know how to begin. I sat beside him in the moving car as he scrolled through an iPad, an awful silence sitting with us in the car. He already looked angry; how would I tell him this? “Your father, he doesn’t look like he’ll die soon,” I decided to begin with that. “At least not to me.”“Unfortunately.” He didn’t lift his head from the screen. “Your mother,” I continued, shifting in my sitting position. “She spoke like he was going to die real soon.”“That’s because he is,” he looked me straight in the eyes. “She’s going to kill him.”I swallowed thickly as I held his gaze for a few seconds. He exhaled and looked away from me, reclining into the car seat. “Don’t bother your little with this family business.”How could I do that when I had a car
FABIOLA. Tobias strolled out like he didn’t just attack his brother-in-law with a glass filled with wine. “You can’t go in together.” Mrs Hawkeye obviously didn’t care about their little fight.Tobias ignored her and led the way, with me tailing behind him. Walking through the hallway that had walls like mirrors, I looked around the paradise in awe. Just how much money went into this house? The guard at the door repeated. “Two people can’t go in there.”What was I going in there to do in the first place? I couldn’t help but wonder. Tobias texted on his phone and in a few seconds Cane showed up in the hallway; then Tobias turned to me. “One minute,” he muttered before entering the room. He had to get Cane to watch over me. Says a lot about his trust issues. He walked into the room and shut the door and I stood there, beside Cane, quiet. He stayed in for more than a minute but he was quick. “You can go in.” The grumpy man guarding the door said the minute Tobias stepped out. I
