It's been three weeks since I moved into Daisy's home, and I must say they are the best humans I've met on this earth. They made me forget about my marriage crash and showered me with love and care.
I felt valued and happy, more than when I was with Zayn. However, since I had no job, I always felt like a burden to them, even though Daisy would tell me not to worry about it.
At one point, her husband promised to secure me a job in one of his companies, which would take some months, if not a year, after they had made some rearrangements.
However, I decided to start a part-time job at one of the top restaurants in the city while waiting for the opportunity.
Today started off hectic for me due to my pregnancy issue. I wasn't feeling well, but I decided to manage and go to work since I hadn't requested leave yesterday.
My senior colleagues and boss might think I intentionally chose not to come to work.
As I walked in and went to the dressing room to put on my uniform, a colleague knocked on the door.
"Zora, Mr. Luke said you should meet him in his office when you're ready," she said.
I was curious upon hearing that because for a boss to summon someone to his office early in the morning indicated a serious issue.
"Hopefully, there's no bad news attached to this summon," I mumbled inwardly and hurried to the boss' office.
A few minutes later, I was in front of Mr. Luke's office. I took a deep breath and prayed silently before knocking for entrance.
His assistant walked out, and upon noticing me, she instantly opened the door widely and allowed me to enter, which was unusual. She would usually have to inform Mr. Luke first, and he would give her permission.
I was curious for a moment, but my instinct told me he had probably instructed her to let me in.
"Good morning, Mr. Luke," I greeted him, bowing in respect.
"Good morning, Zora," he replied, stopping what he was doing and smiling at me.
In all honesty, the smile calmed my nerves. At least it indicated that this summon wasn't about bad news.
"Zora, I called you to commend you for your work in this organization. I'm quite impressed with your performance in the past two weeks," he said, pausing for a moment.
He tore a check from a checkbook and handed it to me. "That's your salary. Additionally, we have decided to promote you to the VIP section, which means an increase in your salary."
"Oh my goodness!" I exclaimed and went on my knees in gratitude. "God bless you, sir. Thank you so much for this opportunity, and I promise to continue making you proud," I responded, tears of joy welling up in my eyes.
"It's okay. Get up," he said, coming out of his seat to hold me up, embracing me. He's a really kind boss, and I hadn't had any issues with him since I started working here.
"You can start working immediately. Here is your uniform," he said, handing me a packaged shirt and skirt customized for VIP bartenders.
"Thank you so much, sir," I said before leaving the office. As I was leaving, I glanced at the check in excitement. I couldn't believe the amount written on it. It was double my salary. I was thrilled because I had planned to use my first salary to buy gifts for Daisy and Blake as a token of appreciation for their kindness towards me.
I was overjoyed because this amount of money was enough for me to buy gifts and rent an apartment for myself to prepare for my unborn baby.
I changed into the VIP uniform in the locker room and headed to the VIP section.
"Zora, welcome. There's a couple who just ordered from the 3rd room. Please check their request list and serve them," the receptionist informed me as I entered.
I followed her instructions, prepared their order on a tray, and headed to serve them in the 3rd sector.
However, my expression was indescribable when I walked into the room and saw Zayn and Paige chatting and laughing.
My legs froze as I stood there with their order. I never imagined they would be the couple I was assigned to serve.
"Honey, I loved the wedding you organized for us. It was the talk of the town and probably broke the internet," Paige said to Zayn.
I was stunned to hear that they had gotten married in such a short period.
"Anything for you, baby. What do I gain if I don't make you happy?" Zayn replied.
His response felt like a sharp blow to my chest. I thought of leaving, but I knew I had to do my job, or I could face demotion or even dismissal for their complaint.
Summoning courage, I approached their table to serve them.
"Zora?!" Zayn was the first to notice me, looking surprised.
"What!" Paige exclaimed as she turned and saw me, bursting into a sarcastic laugh and staring at me with disdain.
"I told you she can't live without you, honey. Look at how miserable her life has become," she said. "I'm sure she regrets rejecting your offer back then."
I swallowed hard, trying to remain composed. I didn't want to jeopardize my promotion or risk being fired.
I delivered their order and ignored their hurtful comments.
"This is your order. If you need anything else, I'll be nearby," I said, turning to leave when I heard a noise.
"Pick up this spoon," Paige commanded. "Look how unprofessional you are. You deliberately placed the spoon to make it fall."
I was surprised by her accusation as the spoons were in the middle of the tray, making it unlikely for them to fall unless intentionally knocked over.
As a bartender, I had no choice but to comply with her demands to avoid a negative review.
As I bent to pick up the spoon, Paige shook the table, causing water and wine to spill on me.
I was furious and almost lashed out, but I managed to control my anger. "Paige, have you not done enough? Don't mistake my composure for weakness, or I will not hesitate to defend myself. I don't mind being..."
Before I could finish, I felt a sharp slap on my cheek, and I instinctively retaliated with multiple slaps, causing her to cry out.
Zayn quickly intervened, and Paige rushed out to report me to the management.
"Finally, what I was trying to avoid has happened," I muttered, regretting my actions. I hurriedly left the room, heading straight home as I anticipated the consequences if her complaint reached Mr. Luke.
I knew Mr. Luke valued his VIP customers, and one of the restaurant rules was to treat customers with respect even in challenging situations.
"It's time to leave this city and start a new life where I won't have to see this couple. I need to move to a city where I'm not known at all."
I booked a cab and arrived at Daisy's home. After settling my belongings, I left a letter for Daisy and Blake explaining my decision and where I was going.
After re-reading the letter to ensure it conveyed my intentions, I placed it where they would easily find it.
I gathered my luggage and left, informing the staff that I was visiting a sick relative in the hospital to avoid suspicion.
I took a cab to the airport. "Northville City, here I come."
Jason —Two years laterI was in my penthouse in South Carolina, sipping my wine and admiring the beautiful city view when my fiancée Clara called my name from inside."Babe, your phone is ringing," she said, rushing over to hand it to me."Who's calling?" I asked curiously, not expecting any calls that day as I had decided to take a break from work."It's an unsaved number, but Truecaller says it's Zora," she replied, handing me the phone.I felt disappointed at the mention of that name. I thought I had blocked her, so how was she able to reach me?I hesitated to answer the call, but Clara had made the effort to bring me the phone, so I reluctantly accepted it to avoid devaluing her efforts or raising suspicions of infidelity."Speak," I said as soon as I accepted the call."Um, good morning, Jason. I'm really sorry for everything. I just hope you can find a place in your heart to forgive me, even though it may be difficult," a weak, feminine voice cried from the other end of the line
ZORA—"Hello, Zayn," I said as soon as I answered the call. My voice was so cold that it was enough to let him know I was not happy with him."Hello, baby. What happened? Is there a problem?" He asked inquisitively, trying to soften my mood as he knew he had upset me."Are you pretending not to know what you did? Okay, setting that aside, why didn't you pick up my calls?"He gasped and asked, "When? Oh, that must have been when I was in a meeting with some of our collaborators.""I'm really sorry," he added, sighing."It's okay. Actually, I wanted to ask about your close friend Blake. Have you been in touch with him recently?""Of course, I just spoke with him this morning. Is there an issue? Is he okay?" His concerned tone indicated he was starting to worry."Well, Daisy and I have been unable to reach him. He's unreachable while Daisy is undergoing the artificial insemination procedure. We're concerned that something may have happened to him, but since you said you spoke with him th
ZORA—I was at the office when I lied to Daisy on the call, telling her that I was off to work. Thankfully, there was nothing else to do in the office, as the board of directors had canceled the meeting that was supposed to happen in a few minutes.I went home, picked up my daughter, and drove to the hospital where Daisy is doing the artificial insemination.Upon our arrival at the hospital, she was already in the operating room, so we had to sit in the waiting room and pray for her safe operation."Mommy, where is Aunty Daisy? I thought you told me we were coming here to see her?" Daisy asked with a worried look on her face."Of course, darling. We're here for her, and she's here. She's just inside the operating room, so we have to wait for her," I explained calmly, caressing her hair with a smile on my lips."But what happened to her? Is she sick? I don't want her to be sick because she promised me to give birth to a girl I could go to school with.""Absolutely. That's the main reas
DAISY—"Really? I can't believe Paige came to your house. But I thought she was in prison. How did she escape?" I asked Zora in astonishment after she told me about her recent encounter with Paige."Honestly, dear. I couldn't imagine what might have happened if I did not show up at home by that time. The fact that I saw her carrying Daisy and that she was sitting comfortably on her thighs makes me want to throw up, gosh." I could hear her voice as she sighed. She was traumatized by the experience."Calm down, Zora. The most important thing is that you were able to save your daughter from her, and I hope you have taught her not to embrace strangers at all unless you approved her to do so.""Of course I did a long time ago. That was why I was stunned. I think Paige was using a sort of voodoo on my household. First, it was Zayn, and now my daughter." She said this with a pathetic voice."Oh, dear, don't think those things. What matters now is that your daughter is fine, okay?" I said, tr
ZORA—"When you do, come back to drive this lady out of my house."Amanda's facial expression changed instantly. She gave me a worried look, but she dared not question my authority."Come on, Zora, why are you causing a scene? Your daughter Daisy likes me, and that's why she was comfortable with me. You should let her go up when she wants to," Paige said with a disdainful tone, rising to her feet to leave and avoid embarrassment."I'd rather punch a rock than leave my daughter with a demon like you," I remarked, hissing with irritation on my face.Thankfully, Daisy and Amanda were already halfway upstairs, so they couldn't hear us exchanging words. Nevertheless, I would still scold Daisy later for feeling too comfortable with someone she barely knows to the point of snubbing me when I called her to embrace me."Well, thanks to the universe, you saw with your own eyes that I did not force your daughter to be with me. She was enchanted by my beauty just like her father was.""Beauty att
ZORA —"Well, I don't have an answer for that right now," he replied, releasing me and turning away, heading to the room to avoid further questions, unwilling to reveal what he was keeping to himself.I let out a deep sigh, gazing at him for a few seconds, and I shook my head with a faint smile on my lips. "Now it all makes sense," I blurted out, but he only winced in response. After washing my face, I went to his kitchen to prepare a meal for both of us and one for him to keep in the refrigerator. Surprisingly, he kept checking on me in the kitchen, assisting with cutting vegetables and other tasks to speed up the food preparation, something he had never done before.Usually, when he was at home, he would either be reading or watching football.Once the meal was ready, we sat down to eat, and Zayn was delighted, expressing his wish for me to cook for him every day. After we finished eating, he offered to drive me home, which I accepted, as it would also give him a chance to see Daisy
