LOGINThe next morning, A loud banging from the door woke Kate up, who wanted to sleep some more. ‘Ugh….. What the?’ She looked at the time by her bedside and saw that It was just six o’clock in the morning.
‘Who could be at the doorstep by this hour?’ She mused as she rolled over on the bed to ignore it and continue sleeping but the banging didn't stop, in fact It became louder.
Kate sat up straight, fuming. With a groan, she grabbed her robe and put it on, then hurried to get the door. She looked through the peephole and freezed, It was Lucas knocking the daylights out of her door with Ace standing beside him. ‘What do they want now?’ She sighs and opened the door.
“Finally.” Lucas snarled as he strode into her apartment.
"You’ve got some nerve, acting like you are the one being inconvenienced here. Do you have any idea what time It is?” Kate exclaimed, prepared to admonish the entitled and haughty mob leader before her.
"It's six." Lucas replied monotonously.
“Oh, for a minute I thought your watch was broken." Kate retorted in a disparaging tone.
“Someone is in a rather foul mood today." Lucas remarked, an amused smile adorning his face.
“With good reason! Would you care to enlighten me as to why you are here at such an ungodly hour?”
"Ungodly? Are you implying that you have yet to pack up?”
“What?" Kate was taken aback.
"I assumed you would be prepared to depart by now. Unbelievable." Lucas shook his head, as though dealing with Kate was causing him an immense amount of exasperation
“Hold on! What do you mean, ‘packed up?’ Why would I be packing?”
"Because you will be living with me at my villa from now on.” Lucas said righteously, as though he didn't just throw a bomb on Kate.
Kate stared at Lucas in disbelief, “You must be joking. I can't live with you. We aren't even married yet, just engaged!.”
‘even that sounds phony.’
"It's already been decided. We are cohabitating for the course of this arrangement. You will have your own room, If you are concerned about propriety.”
"So you just expect me to pack up and leave? I have a Job, you know!”
“I have already contacted your office and shared with them the good news of our marriage. Honestly, do you think I’d leave the most obvious unaccounted for?” Lucas said and gestured to the inside of her apartment with a nod of his head. "Your Job will be waiting for you when we split ways. Now, hurry up and grab your things. No fiancée of mine is going to be living in a mouse hole like this.” Kate stared at him, simply appalled.
She was impressed by how scrupulous he is, which should be given for the head of a Mafia group but a stubborn part of herself still can't stand down so easily. “I like my mouse hole apartment, thank you very much."
"Why?” Lucas asked, with knitted brows.
"It's my home……It's cozy, I don't need a villa." She said and Lucas scowled.
“Then you will just have to tolerate a temporary life of luxury." The cocky note in his voice didn't escape Kate and it made her bristle..
“Now look, There's no reason why I need to leave my home to fake an engagement.”
Lucas chuckled as he said, "That's unwise, when you're engaged to a man like me.”
“What's that supposed to me —-” Kate didn't get to finish her words when a gunshot resounded outside her apartment.
Almost immediately, Lucas held her and pulled her down with him as they hit the floor together and a bullet pierced through her window. Ace gets into action as he draws his AK47 gun and spins around, ducking into her apartment and using the door for cover as he shoots at the intruders too.
A deep voice yelled loudly and boomed outside the apartment. “This is the place, Get the girl at any cost!"
“Damn! Didn't think they would move this soon." Ace cussed and said as he fired back.
Pinned beneath Lucas, Kate felt paralyzed as though lost in thought. ‘Those men are out for my head and Lucas shielded me?’ Before she can fully process what's happening, Lucas rolls off from the floor and pulls her to her feet. He brandishes a revolver and fires off a shot into the garden without a glance, effortlessly taking down one of the gangsters.
“Do you get what I mean now?" He said, with a serious tone and an equally expressionless face.
Kate stomach twists, ‘Of course, being a Mafia boss’ fiancée makes me a target. I was a fool to think I could just continue my normal life alongside Lucas's plan.
“We will need to run for the car." Lucas' magnetic voice brought her out of her thoughts.
“What?!"
“Ace, cover us and handle things here." Lucas ignored Kate, and said to Ace. He couldn't imagine how the poor girl must be feeling.
“Got it." Ace responds back without looking at them as he moves out from behind cover and fires at the rival gangsters, forcing them to scatter in the wake of his gunfire. At the same time, Lucas grabbed her hand and pulled her out the door, shielding her from view with his large coat.
They sprint together out of the apartment building and toward the car parked outside. Lucas pulls open the door and ushers her inside before sliding into the driver's seat. He fires a shot sidelong at a mobster and starts the engine.
“W–Wait, what about Ace?” She asked, concerned for him.
"He can handle himself, you are the priority.” Lucas said as he hits the pedal and speeds away from the apartment, the gun still, ready to fire at anyone.
‘That’s so cold……I thought they were friends or Is Ace just that good?’ Kate mused as she stared down at her hands and realized they were shaking. She clasped them together tightly.
After some minutes, Lucas glances over, his gaze softening. “You will be safe at the villa. My enemies aren't foolhardy enough to attack you there."
Kate nodded, “That's good." She leaned her head back against the seat and tried to calm the pounding of her heart.

Bob turned to Briella, nodding his head toward the door. "Go check who it is," he said.Briella nodded and stood up immediately, almost running to the door before flinging it wide open. She scowled when she saw that it was Ace. "It's you," she grumbled."Hey, kiddo." Ace raised his hands and ruffled her hair, making Briella's scowl deepen. He was always doing that to her, knowing very well that it annoyed her."Stop it," Briella hissed, slapping his hand away while Ace just winked at her. "Why are you here? Don't you always come back at night?" she fired, glaring at him. Both of them had always bickered since she had known him. That was because Briella was holding a grudge against him. After all, he had not been exactly pleased that Kate had come to her rescue that night, and she had also overheard Ace telling Kate that she looked suspicious and that Kate should be careful around her.Even though Ace had apologized for his initial assumption about her, Briella would not let it go easi
Bob was busy setting dishes on the dining table when he heard the door open and turned his head. "You're right on time," he enthused, waving Kate over. "I made your favorite meals today."Kate opened her still-sleepy eyes and yawned loudly before she could stop herself. She walked lazily to the table and looked at Bob. "Good morning, Uncle. What did you make?" she asked as another yawn escaped her lips."See for yourself," Bob said, nodding at the table, his eyes watching her carefully. He couldn't help but notice how she had been sleeping too much lately and constantly yawning.A week had passed since the night Kate had shown up at his doorstep with her minions, and they had been living off him ever since. Ace always went out early before anyone woke up and came back late at night, while the girl Kate had saved the other day had taken it upon herself to visit Kate every day to keep her company, a gesture he was grateful for.He had noticed that Kate enjoyed the young girl's company a
"You put yourself at risk," Ace said, frowning at Kate. "That man could have hurt you if I hadn't reached you in time."One moment, he had seen her walking toward the building and had taken his eyes off her as he parked the car, and when he got out of the car, she had disappeared from his sight. He had raised an eyebrow as he wondered whether she had entered the building, and just when he was about to confirm his thought, he heard voices coming from across where he stood.Ace lost it when he recognized Kate's voice, and he rushed to the scene, reaching there in time to stop the man from striking her.Kate's voice softened when she heard the concern in his voice. "Thank you."Then she turned to the girl beside her. "Are you okay?" she asked, her eyes scanning her body. The girl's body trembled as she managed a nod."Who was that man?" Ace asked, looking suspiciously at the girl. "And why were you with him at this hour of the night?""Ace," Kate warned."What?" Ace asked with raised bro
Lucas stiffened as Kate's sentence replayed again and again in his head. 'If I stay, I’ll eventually hate you. I feel suffocated being near you, Lucas.'His hold loosened around her, and Kate used that as an opening to leave his arms. She stood there for a moment as they stared at each other, their hearts hurting for one another. Then, Kate turned around and ran away from the garage, letting her feet lead her far away from the villa while Lucas stood there like a lost man, watching her disappear from his line of sight. She had promised never to leave him, Lucas thought sadly, as a lone tear finally slipped from his eye.Ace removed his gaze from Kate's direction and looked back at Lucas's face. Seeing how broken he looked, he felt like his heart was hurting, too.'Fuck,' he cursed silently, not knowing if he should stay behind and comfort Lucas with his presence or go after Kate. He was torn between his loyalty to Lucas and his duty toward Kate, and he didn't like the feeling one bit.
“It was you?” Kate whispered.Lucas exhaled as he watched her, his eyes mirroring her pain. His mind suddenly replayed the conversation he had with her when she had told him about her parents' accident. She had blamed herself for it, thinking she had been responsible for their deaths. But no.It wasn't her fault. It was his.He was responsible for that accident. He had been the one who had run them over with his car.He could remember telling her that he was going to find the person behind the accident and get justice for her.Lucas's stomach dropped at the thought because now that he was faced with the truth, he realized he had been the villain in her story all along. How would he punish himself? Turn himself in?'You could stay away from her,' a voice said in his head, and Lucas shook his head immediately. No!He didn't think he could do that.Letting her go would kill him. He was going to accept any punishment from her except staying out of her life.Reaching that conclusion, Lucas
Lucas’s expression filled with worry the moment he noticed Kate’s reaction, and almost immediately, his chest tightened once again. He stepped closer and placed his hands gently on her shoulders, turning her to face him. “What’s the matter, Kitty? You look pale,” he asked softly.Kate slowly raised her trembling hand and pointed at the car. “That car…” she whispered. “Why is it in your garage? Who owns it?”Lucas glanced at the car before looking back at her. What was happening? Wasn’t it a new car that his uncle had just gotten for her? Why was she talking as if she recognized the car from somewhere?Confusion clouded his face as he looked at her. “Honey,” he called gently. “The car is for you. Uncle Julian got it as a gift. That’s the surprise he was talking about.”Kate’s lips curved bitterly. Yes, she was surprised, but not for the reason Lucas thought. Judging by the confusion on his face, she knew he had no idea what that car meant. She shouldn’t be asking Lucas about the car.
Instead of entering the pool like Lucas wanted her to, Kate took off her shoes, and sat down on the side of the pool, dipping her feet in. Face with Lucas's toned abs, and minimal clothing, her breath caught, and her eyes trailed off to his body, stopping at his swimwear. Lucas curled his lips into
The next day, Kate woke up early with a dread feeling in the pit of her stomach. She was feeling so restless throughout the night that she couldn't sleep well and had dark circles under her eyes. Glancing towards the wall clock in her room, she was surprised to see that it was just six a.m. in the m
Lucas stared at Kate, stunned, and thought to himself, Did she just slap him? He mused, No one had ever raised their hands to him, not even his parents! Who would dare to hit him? Lucas Romano, Does she not fear for her life? As Lucas just conceived those thoughts, his eyes flashed when he saw that
The dimly illuminated room exuded a pungent scent of cigars and hushed confidences. Within one of Romano's havens, Lucas Romano, the inscrutable scion of the Romano's clan, stood at the forefront of the extended mahogany table. His piercing gaze swept over the gathered mafia bosses, each one a viper
