Chapter 65_ Guilt

Kate sat on the bed, her knees pulled up to her chest, arms wrapped around them. Her head was bowed, her face half-hidden behind her knees, and a soft, broken sob slipped from her lips. Her entire body trembled, as though the memories she’d just shared with Lucas were too heavy for her to bear.

Lucas, who was seated a small distance from her, watched her, his heart twisting painfully at the sight. The way her body trembled, the way her fingers gripped her knees like she was holding herself together—it broke him. He wanted to reach out his hands, to pull Kate back into his arms, but he hesitated.

His chest tightened with regret. He had asked her about her past, but now he regretted ever asking her that. He wasn't sure if he deserved to know about her past if it caused her so much pain. He dragged a long breath out, his voice spilling out her name softly, “Kate…” It was all he could manage to say.
